Which One Of Y’all Want Beef?

Storytelling ain’t always love, peace, and kumbaya. Sometimes our favorite storytellers beef with each other in public. And we, the audience, eat it up.

In this episode, Katie and Yves take a walk down a beef-laden memory lane, reexamining feuds between Zora Neale Hurston and other Harlem Renaissance writers.

    Ep. 156: Floydian Slips

    Ep. 156: Floydian Slips

It’s time again to set the controls for the heart of the sun and celebrate our co-host: Robert Harrison’s birthday! Space out with us as we absorb a collection of songs that evoke the essence and vibes of his favorite band: Pink Floyd. While not obscure at all (they have 2 albums that are diamonds!), we shine on with snippets of similar sounds and themes by somewhat more modern bands from the 90s until today.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is usually forced to test his endurance, but this week is all about songs firmly in his big bang zone. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, even with this collection of great dance songs sounding similar to one of the biggest selling rock acts of all time.

    Songs this week include:

    1. The McBroom Sisters – “What Do You Want From Me”from Black Floyd(2020)
    2. Porcupine Tree – “The Jokes On You” from Up The Down Stair (1993)
    3. King Buffalo – “Mammoth” from Regenerator (2022)
    4. RPWL – “Masters Of War” from The RPWL Experience (2008)
    5. Thee Oh Sees – “Carrion Crawler” from Carrion Crawler / The Dream (2011)
    6. North Atlantic Oscillation – “Ceiling Poem” from Grappling Hooks (2010)
    7. Anathema – “Your Possible Pasts / Goodbye Cruel World” from Alternative 4 (1998)

E102: Pink Floyd — 'Obscured By Clouds' 50th Anniversary

In this episode, we discuss Pink Floyd's 'Obscured By Clouds' album in celebration of the 50th anniversary of its release. A film soundtrack released between 'Meddle' and 'The Dark Side Of The Moon,' it gets a bit lost in the shuffle, which is a real shame, because it has some great songs on it...

The Dark Side of the Moon (# 041)

The Dark Side of the Moon (# 041)

The Dark Side of the Moon (S3-E11)

The JabberGuys… Ote, Queex, and Cha break down Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and share some of the backstory of the making of this iconic album from 1973.

Listen to the playlist on SPOTIFY

The Dark Side of the Moon concept album is launched in 1973

Ground-breaking use of progressive technical sound engineering

Original members of Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright

David Gilmour joins the group in 1967 and Syd Barrett leaves in 1968

The recording environment was dark to feed creativity, and contributed to the dark lyrics

Studio album is recorded over 2 years with the working title ‘Eclipse’ at Decca Studios (Hampstead-1972), Rolling Stones Victorian warehouse studio (Bermondsey-1972), and Abbey Road Studios (London-1972-73).

Two songs used to promote album were “Us and Them” and “Money”

Album scheduled for release in March 1973, is preceded by a press reception in February, but band doesn’t show up since they felt the album wasn’t ready yet. The press listened to the album with cardboard cut-outs of the band members on a low-quality PA system.

Controversy with credits and compensation for the song “The Big Gig in the Sky” with singer Clare Torry.  She wanted credit for co-composing and sued them 30 years later.  Settled out of court.

Original pressing has an error in the credits for the assistant sound engineer: “Peter Jones vs Peter James”

Alan Parsons was a big part of the sound engineering for the Dark Side of the Moon and was nominated for a Grammy for his work on the album.

The Dark Side of the Rainbow? (YouTube-Full Movie Sync’d)

Wizard of Oz sync’d with The Dark Side of the Moon?  The JabberGuys are skeptical.

The Dark Side of the Moon remained in the Billboard Top-200 for 736 non-consecutive weeks between 1973 and 1988.

Rolling Stone Magazine lists ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ as the best Progressive Rock Album

One of the best-selling studio albums of all time with over 45 million copies sold holding the #3 spot behind ‘Thriller (M Jackson)’ and “Back in Black (AC-DC)’.

Rock News (second week of April 2022)

    -       Who is Gary Gnu? (YouTube)
    -       On this day (April 12, 1968) Pink Floyd releases 4th UK single - “It Would Be So Nice”
    -       On this day (April 12, 1975) Bowie announces he is retiring (Nope… didn’t happen)
    -       Research reveals that ACDC makes surgeons faster and more accurate… wtf?

Alvin Henry on Black Queer Flesh: Rejecting Subjectivity in the African American Novel

Alvin Henry on Black Queer Flesh: Rejecting Subjectivity in the African American Novel

A conversation with Alvin Henry, who teaches in the Department of English at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he writes on African American literature and literary theory. He is the author of the 2020 book Black Queer Flesh: Rejecting Subjectivity in the African American Novel, published by University of Minnesota Press and which we discuss in this podcast. The conversation explores how the frame of queer flesh, entangled with the question of blackness, changes how we read key aspects of African American literature - in particular, Nella Larsen, Ralph Ellison, and Richard Wright. As well, we explore the implications of these re-readings for theorizing subjectivity and how the frame of Black queer flesh exposes our habitual appeal to the very forms of subjectivity that condition and sustain anti-blackness.

    E80: Pink Floyd — 'Animals' 45th Anniversary

In this episode, we discuss Pink Floyd's 'Animals' album, released January 23, 1977. Based off of George Orwell's 1945 novella, 'Animal Farm,' it's long been a favourite of mine and is one that I find to be quite underrated by all but serious Pink Floyd fans...
