Episode 73: The Daylight Monster - Larry Gene Bell

Episode 73: The Daylight Monster - Larry Gene Bell
Have you ever had a gut feeling that someone was following you or watching you perform your usual daily tasks of life? Unfortunately for the two victims highlighted in our case this week, they did not have that feeling.

Maybe 17-year-old Shari Faye Smith was just riding the high of excitement with her impending high school graduation, and was too focused on the next chapter of her life to notice that someone followed her to her home, her safe space, to invade her personal privacy.

Maybe 9-year-old Debra Helmick was too busy playing pretend with her 3-year-old brother in her front yard right outside a window to notice the silver car stalking them.

This week we bring you the case of the notorious Larry Gene Bell, a South Carolina murderer who doesn't even need to be name dropped for locals to know who you are talking about. Listen to Tiffany and Sam discuss his evil plot to disrupt the lives of the Smith and Helmick family by abducting and murdering their sweet, bright blue-eyed, blonde daughters in the daytime hours for everyone to see.

This case has been a long time coming, so let us know what you think, did we do it justice?

Ben Brubaker: Was it the girlfriend with the hammer on the waterbed?

Ben Brubaker: Was it the girlfriend with the hammer on the waterbed?

Ben Brubaker told his boss and one of his best friends, “If anything ever happens to me, it was her,” referring to his then current girlfriend.

She laughed off the claim when interviewed and gave her side of the story on the latest episode of “Chalk Murder to Me,” which examined the baffling disappearance of Ashland, Ohio’s, Brubaker.

Episode 3 walks you through the timeline, has quotes and interviews with law enforcement, the girlfriend, friends and family surrounding the Brubaker case.

There are still leads that need followed, questions that need answered, and hopefully one of you listeners will help us solve the case.

Episode 28: The dog days are over

Big changes are happening at DRM Productions Inc. in Mansfield, Ohio, and who better to talk about it than the two men at the center of it all? Jon Pierce is set to take over as president of DRM, filling Dave Damron's shoes when he retires at the end of the year...er, I mean, "goes part time." Jon started at DRM as an intern, and Dave finds himself a bit anxious about entering this next phase of life. And it turns out, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Episode 26: You say goodbye, and I say hello

Episode 26: You say goodbye, and I say hello

By his own admission, Bill Freytag's career has not been a straight line. He started out in computer technology, took a quick side step to own my favorite bar in Shelby for a while, and then dove into politics with absolutely no political experience, but that’s where he’s ending his working life at the Richland County Board of Elections with less than a year left to go. And he's had an exciting run in politics, from serving on Shelby City Council to transporting political speakers at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland in 2016. The whole mission behind "Why The Hell Am I Here?" is taking a moment to look back on your life and realize how you got where you are, so what better time to do that than at the end of your career? Take a listen, and join me in wishing Bill a happy retirement.

Episode 22: Don't talk politics and don't throw stones

The past few years have brought about some big changes for Tony Vero - a new baby girl, and a new job as a Richland County Commissioner. As a textbook extrovert, Tony always knew he wanted to be in public service someday. However, he didn't expect to enter politics in a climate where online insults are common practice and public trust in government officials is at an all-time low. Our conversation navigates the differences between the public and private sector and how elected officials are expected to handle the more volatile parts of their job.
