    Uber's Road to Sustainability

    Uber's Road to Sustainability

Chris Hook is the Global Sustainability Strategy Lead at Uber

Earlier this summer, Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, wrote a piece on Uber's corporate blog where he outlined a wide array of product features, partnerships, and initiatives at Uber designed to reduce emissions and waste from their footprint, including pulling Uber Eats into their sustainability roadmap for the first time.

It's an interesting challenge. Famously, Uber doesn't own any cars on the road. The individual drivers do. And with Uber Eats, they don't own the restaurants on their platform or control what choices they may make around packaging and waste. They just dispatch drivers for food delivery. It would be easy for Uber to say that the emissions generated via their platform are not their problem, and yet they've done the opposite.

Uber also has a lot of influence. They're able to use their scale to negotiate better EV rental, lease or purchase rates for drivers or better pricing on compostable packaging for restaurants. They're also a leverage point in introducing new products to people. They estimate that over 30 million riders to date have had a chance to experience riding in an EV via Uber, many of whom did so for the first time.

Many folks tried EVs first by renting one via the partnerships that Uber has formed with leading rental companies and almost universally they enjoyed driving EVs more and it works out economically for them. And some, not all, have really done the math on that. We’re grateful to Chris for joining us and hope you enjoy this conversation.

Have any questions for Chris? He’s spent the last decade working with businesses and institutions on sustainability topics. Join Chris for a special Ask Me Anything session on November 1, 2023 in the MCJ member Slack! Details here.

Episode 234: From Fantasia: 'Lovely, Dark, and Deep' (2023)/'Sympathy for the Devil'(2023)

Episode 234: From Fantasia: 'Lovely, Dark, and Deep' (2023)/'Sympathy for the Devil'(2023)

The show starts with a talk about Barbie. It has been a strange year at the box office and Greta Gerwig’s latest release surpassed expectations in a record breaking opening. The question becomes what can stop it? It may not be until the October release of The Exorcist: Believer. The trailer sure looks awesome.

Fantasia is the biggest genre film fest in North America and each edition has some great offerings. This year is no different as it not only boasts some of the most exciting indie films of 2023, there is also a focus on South Korean cinema.

We start our look at Fantasia with the latest movie starring Georgina Campbell. How good is Lovely, Dark, and Deep? The great acting and setting alone make it one of the best of the year. The cinematography is also fantastic, but it is the story the truly sets it apart. It is not very often you see a movie that is so good that it actually makes you jealous.

Nicolas Cage as Dracula is awesome enough, but him possibly playing the Devil may be the greatest casting choice ever. Sympathy for the Devil definitely has its twist and surprises, but not all of them were good. We talk about what we like about it and what it did to disappoint us.

Driving Corporate Activism with Lyft's Dominic Carr

Driving Corporate Activism with Lyft's Dominic Carr

How far should a company go with corporate activism? Lyft is setting the example for how companies should use corporate activism to speak out on issues. Last year, Texas passed the Heartbeat Act, which banned women from receiving abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat. The bill went even further, putting Lyft drivers who take women to abortion clinics at legal risk. The team at Lyft was quick to speak out against the legislation, and ensured drivers that they would cover legal fees and offer additional support if they were caught in trouble for bringing people to access essential health care. Uber followed suit quickly after Lyft’s statement, highlighting how Lyft is setting an example for how to conduct corporate activism.

Back in October, Fred Cook spoke with Dominic Carr, EVP of Communications & Marketing at Lyft. He joined Lyft just a year and a half ago and has already put the pedal to the metal when it comes to corporate activism. In this episode, Fred and Dominic discuss how a company can act on a broader corporate purpose, and how to do it right.

Reimaging Mobile Ads and Utilizing the Rideshare Market w/ Craig Cook, CEO and co-founder of mobilads

Reimaging Mobile Ads and Utilizing the Rideshare Market w/ Craig Cook, CEO and co-founder of mobilads

In this episode of OOH Insider, Craig Cook, CEO, and Co-Founder of Mobilads, discusses the genesis of his platform and analyzing ROI on wrapped rideshare advertisement audiences.

Mobilads is a data-driven advertising platform that utilizes wrapped rideshare vehicles as mobile billboards. They connect device id data to digital analytics to prove return on investment.

    Takeaways

    • Establishing third-party credibility is the secret sauce to earning trust with a new rideshare market. Find the leaders within the community and build a foundation of honesty, humanity, and consistency.
    • Mobilads generates impressions by tracking their drivers’ location and people through anonymous cellphone demographics or behavioral data.
    • After collecting device ids, Mobilads uses that data to then retarget digitally. Cross-examination has proved there is a return on investment from rideshare advertisements.

    Faizan Bhatty of Halo Cars

    Faizan Bhatty of Halo Cars

Founded in 2018 by Faizan Bhatty and his co-founders, Halo Cars developed hyper-targeted advertising on smart screens that sit on top of ride share cars and taxis. This advertising not only allowed for personalized, local advertising to where your car is driving, but additionally became a safe resource for finding your rides hare car by displaying the license-plate number on top of the car so it can be found more easily and reliably. Additionally, through this smart-screen advertising, Halo Cars is able to provide additional income for ride share drivers, giving them a sustainable wage.

Ahead is the story of how Halo Cars went from an idea at Wharton School of Business to being acquired by Lyft in 2019.

For our listeners, the thoughts and opinions of Faizan Bhatty do not reflect those of Halo Cars, but of his personal journey to where he is today.

    Episode 21- Lyft

    Episode 21- Lyft

In this episode of From Idea to Done, we discuss Lyft and their plans to eliminate the need for private vehicles by 2025. We chat about their current attempts at integrating with public transport systems.

J/E: Hey Everyone, I'm Josh and I'm Erick

E: Today’s idea is replacing private cars. This week Lyft came up with an update to their app. With this update their president said, “There is only one mobility mode that Lyft truly wishes to defeat. The private automobile. That seem a little ambitious to me.

J: The battle between Lyft and Uber seems like a zero sum game. I don’t know if I fully agree with his statement that by 2025 owning a car will go the way of the DVD. They actually showed that short term usage of vehicles went up with the growth of Uber and Lyft.

E: The article talks about incorporating dockless scooter, bike and car shares, and public transportation with time and cost comparisons on top of their normal taxi services.

J: I think a big opportunity is the ability to have, in real time, multiple transportation options available to you. It makes me not have to plan as much, but just adapt to current conditions. Unless that adapting is for me to use a scooter. That I will not do. I’m a 38 year old adult for god sakes.

E: I got in trouble when I worked at Toys R Us for bringing carts in by lassoing them with twine while riding electric scooters. We’ll just agree to disagree on scooters.

    J: Thats fair.

E: One of the problems I see with it, is it isn’t all automatically deducted from your account in app. Their main competitor Uber has taken a similar route just incorporating public transportation.

The big difference with Uber, is you get the ticket in App. Part of today’s super ambitious world is we just don’t have time to do anything. I don’t care what a bus pass costs. I just don’t want to think, push a button, and have a bus pass. Lyft how dare you have me interact with any aspect of public transportation, and buy a ticket myself!

J: Well that's stupid, it is a big cost of integration with those mass transit platforms, but they are leaving a ton of data and money on the table. I think that in NYC or LA they should look at pulling the transit systems into the app and pay through the app. The MAT systems would get increased ridership and Lyft would be better positioned.

E: And according to the article Uber is doing that in test markets already. You have to keep up with your main competitor. They have some pretty big ambitions to get rid of private cars within six years. I don’t think they are going to do it. I am buying a car this month Josh do you think it will be the last car I will buy?

J: No, cars are going to be around for a while, especially here in Fargo, ND. I mean I am going to leave here today, pick up my 3 kids that are all in booster and car seats, how am I going to do that in a ride share. I dunno, maybe I’m just embodying a cranky old man that doesn’t get things.

E: ...basically us. Prove us wrong Lyft.

J: Thank you for listening to this episode, if you know a startup that could use our random advice and thoughts have them subscribe and leave a review on iTunes.
