Iron Flame - The Empyrean Book 2, Part 2

Caitlin and Hilda continue their discussion on "Iron Flame," book 2 in Rebecca Yarros' The Emyprean series. And what was supposed to be a 2 part series, is officially going to be a 3 part series, because SO. MUCH. HAPPENS in this book, and they need the time to thoroughly discuss all the details.  And this should surprise no one at this point, but we are still on the struggle bus with some of these pronunciations.

    Ricky Carmichael

    Ricky Carmichael

For those who watched our next guest’s ascent to motocross and supercross greatness, the acronym by which this hall of famer is often and deservingly referred is apropos. Credited with 15 national titles—10 in motocross, including two perfect seasons, and five in supercross—Ricky Carmichael is indeed the GOAT, or the Greatest Of All Time.

Following a four–year NASCAR career, the 43-year-old Floridian now splits his energy and time between his family and television broadcasting duties, as well as working with amateur riders in various self-branded camps and events. In addition, Carmichael has partnered with Triumph Motorcycles to help develop an all-new line of off-road competition machines.

As part of his relationship with the British marque, Carmichael has discovered a new two-wheel outlet: adventure riding. Unofficially christened the “RC Summer Adventure Ride,” the annual outing has become defined by a small group of close friends traveling off the beaten path and exploring some of the best roads imaginable—paved or otherwise—in the conterminous U.S.

    Peter Egan

    Peter Egan

For a generation of motorcycle enthusiasts, Peter Egan represented something of a revelation. Here was someone who spoke their language, who found ways to escape the chill of winter to bring them with him across the country, eloquently describing  through the pages of Cycle World the flat expanses, curving mountain roads, and scenic coastlines he traveled, often with his wife, Barbara.

Egan’s writing first appeared in Cycle World in 1977, and he was a regular fixture in the publication for decades. For the foreword of “Leanings 2,” the second compilation of Egan’s feature stories and slice-of-life columns, longtime Editor-in-Chief David Edwards described his friend and riding buddy as “the perfect writer” for CW, adding, “Peter’s love of motorcycling is deep and non-denominational.”

Peter has documented many of his road trips, including detailed accounts of the failings of the vehicles, interactions with the people with whom he traveled, and the characters and weather he encountered along the way. Peter and Barb still live in Wisconsin, near Madison, and we are grateful that he has agreed to join us on this episode of “Driven To Ride” to share some of his lifetime of experiences.

    Alonzo Bodden

    Alonzo Bodden

Six-foot-four-inch Alonzo Bodden strikes an imposing figure, both on the stage as an internationally recognized comedian and off it. A native of Queens, New York, Bodden moved in the 1990s to Long Beach, California, where he worked in the aviation industry as a mechanic. Since his comedy career took off, Bodden has appeared in numerous films and TV shows. He is a regular on NPR’s “Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!”

The easy-going linebacker lookalike is deeply rooted in Los Angeles’ motorcycle culture. It should come as no surprise that his taste in two wheels leans toward larger, more powerful machines. For example, Bodden currently owns a 2019 BMW K 1600 Grand America and a 2023 Ducati Multistrada Pikes Peak, as well as 2008 BMW R 1200 HP2 Megamoto.

In 2010, Bodden crashed his Ducati 1098 during a track day at Buttonwillow Raceway Park near Bakersfield, California. The crash shattered the scaphoid bone in his wrist, requiring multiple surgeries and a bone graft to fix. These days, Bodden sticks mostly to the street. So, we ask: What is it like to ride a motorcycle in a city with one of the densest traffic populations in the country?

    The National Motorcycle Museum

The National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa hosted over 500 motorcycles from every decade and almost every manufacturer, all handpicked by John Parham and his family of J&P Cycles fame. Let's take a look inside before they close the doors for good, and find out the story of how one guy got all these amazing bikes got into one place.

Fourth Wing - The Empyrean Book 1 Part 1

Fourth Wing - The Empyrean Book 1 Part 1

Bridget, Caitlin, and Hilda are back with part 1 of their discussion on "Fourth Wing," book 1 of The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. Overall, they liked the book, they did not like trying to pronounce the names, and they're all in agreement that Dain is the new Tamlin. Why are blonde men the worst?! (Statement does not apply to Chris Hemsworth.)

Shout-out to TikToker @muireann|ceartguleabhar for helping us pronounce the Scottish Gaelic names! Our failure to do so is not a reflection of your effort.

The Riders Come Out At Night - Ali Winston/Darwin BondGraham

The Riders Come Out At Night - Ali Winston/Darwin BondGraham

On todays episode I have the pleasure of speaking with authors Ali Winston and Darwin BondGraham about their new book titled, The Riders Come Out at Night: Brutality, Corruption and Cover-up in Oakland.

Their book is a meticulously researched and engaging account of a police force rotten to its core and serves as a poignant reminder that the problem with policing in America isn’t just about crooked cops. The problem is a broken system that lacks the will to reform.

During our conversation we’ll be introduced to a group of sadistic cops known as “The Riders” whose disregard for the oath they took to protect and serve is on full, tragic, and infuriating display.

We’ll also meet the wide-eyed rookie, turned whistleblower who was unwittingly partnered with the leader of the Riders.

The Riders Come Out at Night is the story of one city and the explosive scandals, and systematic corruption and brutality in its police department, but it’s also the story of American policing - and where it is headed in 2023.

Cycling Talk! - Race after Race - at the end....Jumbo Visma wins

Welcome, Cycling friends! We have another great episode for you where the complete team discussed the last week's races.

Both men and women raced in Belgium, and we also talked about Tour the Catalunya.

The weather was horrible this week in Belgium, which made for racing into a crosswind and lots and lots of rain. Needless to say that there was enough drama with riding in echelons, crashes, missed corners, and even chain lube was a topic of debate...

The Jumbo Visma team again showed great form taking most of the wins on the men's side. The women did not disappoint either, and we talked about a remarkable new talent from the United States who did really well in Brugge- de Panne and Gent- Wevelgem.

Join us for this podcast so we can help you prepare for next week's Tour de Flanders!!

Cycling Talk! - The week in review leading into Milan San Remo - 10, 9, 8, 7........blast off

Welcome to today's podcast, where we'll discuss the exciting race that took place over the weekend: Milan San Remo. The first monument of the cycling season was filled with thrills, spills, and some incredible performances from some of the world's top cyclists. From the lengthy 294 km route to the infamous Poggio climb, the riders faced plenty of challenges. So, buckle up and join us as we review the highlights and take a closer look at the winners and losers of Milan San Remo.

The crew questions if you need to ride multiple disciplines now a day to win these big races.  Men and women that combine disciplines like: track, cyclocross, mountain bike road, TT etc.

Before we review Milan - San Remo, we closely examine other races, starting with Nokere Koerse Men and Women, Torino-Milan, Trofeo Alfredo Brinda, and Cape Epic. Lotte Kopecki and Shirin van Anrooij raced incredible races for different reasons.

Cycling Talk! - Week of cycling in review - Who's going to beat Pogie in the TdF???

Today the team talks about past weeks' racing in the Tireno Adriatico and Paris - Nice.
The Slovenians ruled both races. The Tireno was won by Primoz Roglic and Paris Nice by Pogacar. Geoff, Jack and Gerry contemplate how it is possible to stay in form throughout the spring classics, rest, and be ready for the Giro (Roglic) and the Tour de France ( Pogacar and Vingegard).
How are Wout, Mathieu and Pidcock doing? Let me tell you....they all had headliners one way or the other.

There is an excellent segment in the podcast where they talk about tires, rolling resistance, and tire width, and they reminisce about their old bikes!
A short preview of next week's races tops of this podcast.
And yes......we kept the podcast within the hour!

    Enjoy episode 46!
