Guest: Eric Fullerton updating Red Sea shipping attacks; Same-day delivery drives higher revenues; How consumers feel about retail experiences

Our guest on this week's episode is Eric Fullerton, senior director of product marketing at project44. Transportation networks continue to be disrupted by the ongoing militia attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. To counter it, most ocean carriers are rerouting goods away from the Suez Canal and extending their ocean miles by sailing around the horn of Africa. We discuss the latest and what shippers can and should be doing to counteract the effects of these ongoing supply chain constraints.

New research into demand for same-day delivery shows that it’s not just hype – consumers still want fast service, and it can actually add up to higher revenue for companies that provide it. That’s according to a report published this week by crowdsourced delivery platform Roadie.

Retailers gathered in Dallas this past week for the Retail Industry Leaders Association annual meeting. We report on two large retailers, Nordstrom and Walmart, and what they are doing to enhance their customers' delivery experiences.

Supply Chain Xchange  also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane.  It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.  A new series on Supply Chain Jobs of Tomorrow  starts this week, as all eight episodes drop this Tuesday.  Go to your favorite podcast platform to subscribe and to listen to past and future episodes.

We finally made it to this legendary show at the Zoo Amp in OKC.

The Flaming Lips - UFO's at the Zoo! (which is available on DVD)

This show was one of the most epic shows ever at the Zoo. Everything from Wayne being lowered onto the stage from a UFO, to him getting in the bubble & walking out onto the crowd. There were so many people at the Zoo for this show, the security guards & police, stepped away from the gates & let everyone inside the venue... Literally the most people i've ever seen at the Zoo.

The end of this episode we revisit a Lynyrd Skynyrd show that happened at the Buffalo Run in Miami where the show almost didn't happen from a mishap on the stage.

Here's The Deal Podcast - The Max Baker Jr. Story - Episode 57

After Max's excursion as Robert Plant's Chauffer through Oklahoma on old Route 66, the week continues to be busy for Max with shows from Ryan Cabrerra as well as the Wallflowers. We also discuss a couple of Slipknot shows that Max missed b/c he wasn't allowed in the building.... Fast Forward to 2023 & now there's actual former band members that aren't allowed inside the venue to see Slipknot... In the Music / Concert / Touring Industry, when your name is added to the "do not admit" list, its known as getting "Max Baker'd"... We also talk about the legend, Shelton Hank Williams III & some of his first shows, touring through Oklahoma w/ Assjack. If you got to see any of these Hank III shows, they were absolutely incredible.

Here's The Deal Podcast - The Max Baker Jr. Story - Episode 49

A Bob Dylan sing-a-long to start this Episode. We pick up in 2004 w/ The Crossroads Guitar Festival again then transition into a chain of events in Max's life, that would knock him back down to the bottom. Monday June 7th, 2004 is a big moment in this story. However, if it were the end of his Rock N Roll Adventures, this podcast wouldn't exist. This is an in depth conversation about the pitfalls of owning a record store selling new & used product.

"My old band, from Tulsa/Claremore played our very first Oklahoma City show for Max at Bricktown Live opening for Old School NYHC band Murphy's Law w/ OKC band Old Major on Wednesday June 9th, 2004. I didn't know until recording this episode what Max was going through in his personal life. My mind is completely blown right now!" - Jay Ramone

Find out what happens when the headliner calls and says their going to be late & the sound guy says, "hey guys.... keep playing, we will let you know when they get here"....

One of the most legendary shows at Bricktown Live in OKC ever!!!!! Damageplan came to Bricktown w/ local bands Lock n Load & Element... The day of the show, Dimebag Darrell Abbott (Pantera/Damageplan/Hellyeah) decided he wanted to have a cookout, went across the street to Bass Pro Shop in Bricktown & bought a grill & all the supplies needed & had a cookout, right outside the frontdoor of the venue next to the bus... People driving or walking by were in total shock to see Dime grilling on the sidewalk!

Here's The Deal Podcast - The Max Baker Jr. Story - Episode 47

We should have catered 4 fried chickens, dry, white toast, & a coke for this Episode as we begin in Blues Brothers style. We discuss the Nate Dog from Element, Tribute  show on Feb. 29th, 2004 w/ Failsafe, Disjointed, Wither, Old Major, etc... This was the first show at the Diamond Ballroom where Max had 2 stages inside the venue. One stage would have a band playing, while the 2nd stage was loading on & setting up. Move forward to March for an Infinite Records showcase with Lure & more OKC bands. March 21st, 2004 @ the Diamond Ballroom, Ill Nino, Flaw, 40 Below Summer, & Element80 rolled through OKC on a $400 tour package. We finish with a show at the Coca-Cola Bricktown Event Center, where an artist did not approve of the limosuine provided to take them from the hotel to the venue... There are two ways to handle situations like this.... You can get upset, throw a fit to the promoter until you get what you want or don't get what you want, but by acting like this, you make everyone's day difficult.... or.... you can be cool, be respectful & figure out a solution without being disrespectful to everyone you're working with that day.... Twista & his camp, handled it incorrectly.... So unfortunately, strict curfew rules apply once the show is over.

    SHOW NOTES:

Topic 1 - David & Martina, Welcome to the show. Please give everyone a brief introduction and how you got started with Backstage and internal development portals.

Topic 2 - Backstage was spun out of Spotify and is now a CNCF project. What problems were developers seeing and what is the origin story of Backstage?

Topic 3 - What were the immediate and long term advantages of consolidating the development experience on the Backstage platform?

Topic 4 -  There is always a healthy tension with development platforms. How do you balance between setting standards to consolidate and providing freedom of choice?

Topic 5 - One of the common takeaways we have seen recently is that the IDP is the output product of Platform Engineering. Do you agree with this statement and what has your experience shown? Is this more about a set of common standards and automation or about a “product” such as an IDP.

Topic 6 - Why does an IDP succeed or fail?

Topic 7- Backstage doesn’t have a reputation of being the easiest to configure or operate. Is this where Backstage as a service comes in? What are the advantages and disadvantages to Backstage as a Service?

Why? Episode 207- Roadie Tana Douglas

Roadies are the lifeblood of any music tour; the folks who are charged with making sure the lights are hung, the instruments are tuned and the stage is set for our favorite artists to perform. Tana Douglas has spent a lifetime in music, cutting her teeth with her fellow Australians like AC/DC and INXS.

Tana's memoir, Loud, is available wherever you get books. You can also get it on her website. For more information you can also follow her on Facebook.

Plus, we pay tribute to a pirate legend on a very special 10th anniversary.

PK and BK have both worked in the music industry (on opposite sides of the business) for over a decade. While BK still is in the music management side, PK has started over and in this episode BK asks PK a pretty big question right from the get go which sparks this multi-parts talk. PK starts the journey in El Paso and, in this episode, ends with him making it to Florida to start a new scary adventure in the music business. Now, it is only a scary tale because what we don't know can scare us but listen to how PK is able to  relate some of those same emotions to his current situation with starting a new life and starting fresh in a world of unknowns.

Rock n Roll Grad School #52- Roadie Tana Douglas

Rock n Roll Grad School #52- Roadie Tana Douglas

Tana Douglas wasn't looking to become the first female roadie in the world- there was a job to be done and she did it. Tana recounts her long way to the top in her new memoir "Loud" which takes you from the clubs with AC/DC to some of the biggest stages (and castles) in the world as Tana makes her way across the world.

"Loud" is available in paperback, digital and audio wherever you get your books. For more information, check out Tana's website.

The "Rolling Stones are in town" episode

The "Rolling Stones are in town" episode

Some of the biggest shows that have ever been put on were some of PK’s first shows as a kid so when he got his first taste of the “Big Show” he was more interested in the men in black standing side stage than he was in the artists performing. PK reminisces about some of the shows in his life that really changed him. Later he dives into some of the memorable shows that he was able to be a part of that truly brought his life full circle in the world of rock n’ roll.

There is also a fun little part in the middle where their little one has a meltdown and they had to pause and go handle some family business but like champs they pick back up right where they left off.

    The First

    The First

Throughout Episode 1, PK and BK discuss everything from what the show is all about to some of their favorite things. They begin by describing their backyard, which is the main setting for the podcast, and then move into answering the question “what is a bevvy” and what does that mean to the show? The rest of the podcast covers many additional topics like the band TOOL, keeping the show organic, hysterical TikToks, and some of their favorite TV shows (including 30 Rock, Top Chef and Anthony Bourdain). This then leads into a chat about a new restaurant that has opened in Nashville, their favorite food to pair with champagne, and wanting to interact with their audience.

Trae Vedder (Manager of Artist Relations/Talent Buyer for Sixthman)

Welcome to Roadcase, a podcast exploring the live music experience!!  Trae Vedder is manager of Artist Relations and a talent buyer for Sixthman, which primarily runs music cruises in the Caribbean. In non-Covid times, it's a great way to take a vacation, get some sun, be on the water, and listen to live music all day long, so if you're into cruises and music, this is your ticket. While cruises were hard hit during 2020, I talk to Trae about how these cruises work in general and when they're coming back, how he arranges for bands to join in the fun, the ins and outs of Artist Relations on the water, and his job as talent buyer for Sixthman, so come aboard and give it a listen!

Tana Douglas' songs from the road

Tana Douglas' songs from the road

What do Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ice Cube, Status Quo, and Neil Diamond all have in common? Tana Douglas. She’s recognised as the world’s first female roadie, and got her start as a teenager working with a young band who were about to release their debut album. The band was AC/DC, and that story is just one of hundreds that have filled her extraordinary life. Tana would go on to tech for The Who at Wembley Stadium, Iggy Pop in Amsterdam, even Elton John, playing a birthday party at Windsor Castle.

She’s just published her story, a memoir titled LOUD, which captures not just the wild tales from the road but also the spirit of the crew who make magic happen every night on stage. It’s a brilliant read, and I was so excited to meet Tana when she joined me to Take 5. She didn’t disappoint. This is as much about a trailblazer as it is a testament to the many roadies who bring our favourite music to life on stage.
