Meet Charlie Harkness. Known around town as a former editor of Rye News, he’s also served as a Rye Town Councillor, but there’s so much more to talk about. After a long career in journalism, he made the move into comms and ended up working in Westminster for successive governments.

It’s 4:45am on the 5th of November 1991 and English media mogul Robert Maxwell is aboard his $35 million dollar yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, cruising through water off the Canary Islands in Spain. He’s on the phone with a crew member.

"The temperature is now too cold. Turn the air-conditioning off," he says gruffly down the line from his luxurious master suite. 

He’d only called 20 minutes earlier complaining it was too hot…and “could they turn the air-conditioning up??”

They’re the last conversations Maxwell - one of the richest men in the world at the time - is known to have had. 

At 5:25pm later that day, the 68-year-old’s naked body is found floating in the Atlantic. And his family, employees, and the police are left to discover the hundreds of millions he’s been stealing from his own staff. 

To this day, his death remains mysterious. 

Did he kill himself, aware that his fraudulent finances would soon be revealed?

Was it just an awful accident? A slip off the side under the cover of darkness.

Or was it murder? A cold-blooded assassination to cover up a top-secret double life as a superspy for one of the largest espionage agencies in the Western world.

We know that Jeffrey Epstein was born on January 20th, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York City. We also know he died on August 10th, 2019 (or late the evening of the 9th) in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan. But what do we know about the sixty-six years in-between? We don't know as much as Epstein as we do many of our previous biographical subjects - he was a pretty mysterious guy - but we do know quite a bit. We know he managed the multi-billion dollar fortune of Lex Wexner, founder and CEO of L Brands - a retail conglomerate that owns Bath and Body Works, Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria's Secret, and more. We know he flew around Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Prince Andrew, and many other celebrities and politicians on a plane dubbed the Lolita Express, and they hung out with many people of note at his private island in the US Virgin Islands, an island dubbed "pedophile island." He sexually assaulted women and girls there, at his massive Manhattan private residence, at his giant New Mexico ranch compound, in his Palm Beach Florida mansion, and elsewhere. In this first of a two-part episode, we examine his life as best we can, so we can best understand the conspiracies that sprung up in the wake of his very suspicious death. Who else was assaulting women and girls along with Epstein? How connected to the US government was this guy? We look into these questions and so much more today.
