Enhancing Patient Outcomes Through Robotic Surgery

Enhancing Patient Outcomes Through Robotic Surgery

St. Joseph’s Health became the first facility in Central New York to acquire da Vinci robotic surgery technology and start a comprehensive program for patient care – not long after the FDA approved da Vinci for general surgery. Surgeons performed 43 robotic surgeries the first (partial) year, nearly quadrupling that number the following year. St. Joseph’s Health has performed more than 14,000 robotic surgeries to date. Patients experience less scarring, shorter hospital stays, faster recoveries, less pain and few infections with da Vinci.

If you’ve never heard of robotic surgery, you may have questions. Is an actual robot doing my surgery? How is it different than other surgeries? What are the benefits? The Director of the Genesis Center of Surgical Excellence, Adam Rothermel, M.D. joins us to answer all of your questions. He explains what robotic surgery is, what the advantages are for the surgeon and the patient, and why so many patients recover more quickly after a procedure.

Da Vinci Robotic Systems & History of Robotics at CMHS

Da Vinci Robotic Systems & History of Robotics at CMHS
da-vinci-robotic-systems-history-of-robotics-at-cmhsCommunity Memorial Healthcare recently reached a major milestone in robotic surgery by completing its 5000th da Vinci procedure. Robotic surgery is often referred to as “robotic-assisted surgery,” and that’s for good reason. Without a skilled surgeon at the helm, a robotic surgical platform is just a sophisticated tool. The surgeon’s technique and expertise using the robot makes all the difference. With the da Vinci system, surgeons work inside a highly sophisticated, immersive console, remotely manipulating tiny instruments that have been inserted into the surgical area.

Robotic assisted surgery allows for incredible precision, resulting in faster recoveries, shorter hospital stays and enhanced results for patients. In this episode, we sit down with one of Community Memorial Health System’s pioneers in robotic surgery, Dr. Marc Beaghler, to discuss a brief history of robotics at Community Memorial Health System and the benefits of the da Vinci robotic surgery platform.

He shares how Penn has designed its new robotic joint replacement program and why Penn has decided now is the right time to add this option to its array of surgeries. He describes the robots they’re using at Penn Orthopaedic Surgery and the advantages for patients and the surgeon.
