    Episode Introduction

In this episode of the "Audio Signals" podcast, host Marco Ciappelli chats with author Katherine Benfante about her book "Scattered", a historical sci-fi work that focuses on time travel. The story explores the life of physicist Ernest Rutherford's daughter who, following a laboratory accident, is abruptly transported a century into the future.

This mind-bending narrative was inspired by Katherine's personal interest in science and history, fueled by her professional background as an engineer. Couched within the sci-fi elements of the story is a profound exploration of the societal progression from the 1900s to the 2000s, through the lens of a character who has, quite literally, lived in both periods. Particularly, the book emphasizes the advancement of opportunities for women, depicted through the character's experiences.

The conversation also provides an insightful exploration into Katherine's writing process. It was revealed how she goes about creating her stories, sometimes derived from a shower thought or a moment of doing the dishes, they are added to a long list of ideas she maintains. Furthermore, Katherine confessed the struggles and challenges of narrowing down the scope of a narrative, especially when transitioning from a full-length novel to a shorter story.

Katherine's passion for writing is evidently clear throughout the discussion, affirming that her writing derives not from the desire for celebrity status or financial success, but rather out of a love for the written word and a drive to tell compelling stories. In fact, she shares that she is currently working on her next project, also within the realm of sci-fi, hinting that the journey of a writer, like time travel, truly never ends.

Listen to the episode for an engaging and inspiring prattle about writing, creativity, and the eternal enchantment of time-travel.

    About the Book

In 1906, Elie Rutherford dreams of joining the physics lab her father, the great Ernest Rutherford, heads at McGill University. Elie is thwarted from pursuing her passion in an era when women are confined to female-only college classes. Fueled by her burning desire for knowledge and purpose, she rebels against societal expectations, refusing to accept a marriage proposal that would threaten to shackle her dreams.

Fast forward to 2006, where William Hertz, a brilliant graduate physics student at McGill, lives an introverted life, immersing himself in the world of astrophysics. Wounded by past experiences, he shields his heart from love, finding solace among his fellow misfit physicist friends. Little does he know that his life is about to take an extraordinary turn when a mysterious stranger appears, lost in time.

Disoriented, Elie concludes a lab mishap brought her forward a century. Trying to blend in with modern students, she hides her identity until she meets William and risks everything by revealing who she really is. Elie and William's shared passion for physics sparks a bond as they attempt to recreate the experiment that can return Elie home. Torn between her past and a 21st-century future with William, Elie faces a heart-wrenching choice. Will she find her way back to 1906 or embrace a new destiny?

    RAAG on Romance Ep 2

    RAAG on Romance Ep 2

Y'all it's time for another round-up of all things romance in this month's RAAG on Romance. Bridget talks about the books that she's been reading (thank you to all publishers for the copies!), Shani and Bridget talk about what TV they have been binging, and generally laugh and play their way through the episode.

Special Thank You to Anna Lowe for sponsoring today's episode. Anna Lowe is the author of Tempting the Sheriff, a steamy, suspenseful paranormal romance featuring a female, fox shifter as Robin Hood and a dragon/knight as the new sheriff of Nottingham. The Sherwood Forest Shifters series combines the action-packed romance of Outlander with the humor of The Princess Bride for a fresh new twist on a classic, with brave knights, cunning bandits, fire-breathing dragons, and forbidden lovers.

Shows and Books we talk about in this month's RAAG on Romance

    • Gen V on Amazon Prime - Highly recommend, but trigger warning - LOTS of violence, gratuitous and frankly weird sex, and trauma of ALL kinds throughout.
    • Business Proposal - Korean Drama - The main character pretends to be someone else and ends up with a billionaire, who she works for! Shani rewatched it and still loves it
    • My Fault or Mia Culpa - Spanish romance movie, based on a Wattpad turned trilogy.  Bridget watched a liked it! Had a new step-siblings fall-in-love taboo element.
    • Fourth Wing and Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros - The hype is worth it. This series is so good. Disclaimer - it is not finished. At least one more book coming next year. I burned right through books 1 and 2.
    • If You’ll Have Me by Eunnie -a sapphic graphic novel - legitimately cried a little at the end with how sweet and heartwarming it is. Fans of Heartstopper jump on this.
    • The Ladies Rewrite the Rules by Suzanne Allain - author of Mr. Malcolm’s List. - list of eligible rich women widows etc turn the tables and use it for their benefit.  Comes out January 9th, 2024
    • Fire in the Flesh by Jennifer L Armentrout – if you missed our interview, make sure you check it out! Plus, we didn’t even talk about her series Blood and Ash being optioned by Amazon Studios.  I burned right through it.

If you haven't read today's author Elle M Drew's books you're missing out! What isn't to like about fat girls getting railed by the paranormal, as Elle's perfect tagline states.

I had such a blast speaking to Elle at the beginning of the year. She is hilarious, forthright about her books' content and we had just the best time chatting about romance, Tiktok for indie authors, having fat heroines, and how bears really mate IRL.

Thank you Elle for coming on the show, and many apologies for how long it took me to release the episode!

Emma was such a fun guest. We talked about what chickens Bridget should get, BTW I ended up with 2 Australorp, 2 Rhode Island Reds, and 2 Wyndottes, Emma’s process of writing Chick Magnet, why she feels setting is so important, and her favorite part about her writing.

Make sure you check out Emma’s writing, and Emma thank you for being with us.

We read the why choose reverse harem paranormal monster romance A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor by Kathryn Moon! And we have to tell you, while it was spicy, we felt it left some monsters on the table!

It was such a pleasure to chat with Mimi Matthews, author of The Belle of Belgrave Square, on our podcast!

Our chat ranged through a bit of everything including writing with a physical injury that causes Mimi to choose where to output her time wisely (ie into writing more books for us!), why she chooses to write in Historical Romance, all about her MC of Belgrave Square and how crazy the practice of bloodletting sounds from a modern context, as well as her publishing journey with Berkely and balancing indie and traditional publishing!

Make sure you check out her latest books, I read both and they were some of my favorite books I read this year, and definitely my favorite historicals of the year.

Shani though NOT | I Think Knot by Sinclair Kelly

Shani though NOT | I Think Knot by Sinclair Kelly

We're doing Halloween in December because I (Bridget), did not have my editing shit together!! But we're back!!

And what a fun episode to be back for. We COMPLETELY disagreed on I Think Knot by Sinclair Kelly! And we both had absolutely no idea what we were in for with this Omegaverse book! Like, literally didn't know that it was a reverse harem of a wolf pack situation (insert picture of me face-palming here).

Please give us a shout with some other omegaverse books for us to try, because clearly this one wasn't the business for Shani!

If you are like Bridget and like a light book with some feels, you can check I Think Knot here

    I Think Knot synopsis:

I may be an omega, but I’ve got dreams and goals of my own, and none of them include shacking up with a pack of raging alphas just because biology says I have to. Sure, that time will come and I’ll welcome it with open arms, but for now, I’m doing me.

I’ve managed to make a name for myself on the PackChat App, unintentionally starting a movement that has earned me millions of followers, along with plenty of enemies. Namely, a rival group known as RideAnAlpha. They drive me crazy with their constant lewd and rude comments, and, admittedly, their thirst traps showing off their hot bodies and abs for days. What? I’m in self-isolation, not dead, after all. They’re the bane of my existence, but I’m a pro at being oblivious.

As my birthday looms, my bestie convinces me to attend a major influencer conference where my rivals and I are keynote speakers. I’m determined to prove the real Bexley Carter is not the evil omega they portray me as. I’ll get in, get out, and stay just long enough to figuratively give them the finger...or maybe literally, time will tell. No thoughts of claiming or bonds or heats since, you know, they hate me and all. I should be safe, right?

    E.F. Dodd | Authors at a Glance

We had author E.F. Dodd on the podcast and chatted about how second-chance romance makes it difficult to do a meet-cute.

How the cast of characters and female friendships is important to the characters and to the creation of the romance and you rooting for the romance.

Writing a contemporary second chance romance, where the main female character maintains her career and falls in love, doesn't require them to give it up, or move home to a small town for a 'simpler life.

Also, I feel that we are now best friends ;)
