Then for our main topic we do an overview of romance scams, from the Spanish Prisoner Swindle a few centuries ago to the online catfishing scams that are presently fleecing Americans to the tune of $500 million a year. Longtime grassroots skeptic volunteer Wendy Hughes kindly joins us to discuss her courageous and candid article "A Skeptic Trips Over a Romance Scam" and talks about what she learned in hindsight and how her skeptical toolkit helped her turn a humbling experience into something that could benefit others.

Linda has since described her ordeal as "the worst thing that ever happened to me." She hopes to help others who've been targeted by scammers to know that strength, forgiveness, and hope exist in the aftermath. Jenna Shellman from ‘Leading with your Gut’ podcast interviews me, Jules Hannaford about my online dating romance scam journey and the making of ‘Fool Me Twice’ true crime podcast. 

I was successful and happy in my life and my job, but was still lonely. I turned to online dating as a last resort, after being single for more than a decade. It seemed I was consistently meeting men who were not good enough. One after another, they seemed only to want to swindle me out of my money, and I was getting frustrated.

Finally, I met a man who had his life together. Truman was a successful project manager at a construction firm, and seemed as excited as I was about the possibility of building a life with someone special. I travelled across the world to meet him, and the fairy tale immediately began to unravel. All was not as it seemed.

I wrote a memoir ‘Fool Me Twice’ and created a true crime podcast of the same name about my experiences. This episode explores my insights into of the world of sweetheart scams, catfishing, and the ugly side of online dating. Thanks to Jenna Shellman for sharing this awesome interview.
