Joined by Peter Burke, Jay Burke and Delta Smith, Rick discusses his own physical and mental challenges as a veteran together with the challenges facing veterans today from both previous and current conflicts.

Richard has served 50 years in advocacy, helping his fellow veterans to access their financial entitlements and mental and physical health services and benefits. He puts in an extraordinary number of hours each week, dedicated to ensuring that servicemen and women be assisted to obtain their entitlements.

Richard was called up for National Service in January 1971 and served in the 11 Movement Control Group of the Royal Australian Engineers in Vietnam. He completed his tour in September the same year with the rank of Corporal.

In 1982 he moved south, where he transferred to the Queanbeyan (NSW) RSL Sub-branch and again volunteered as a Volunteer Advocate. During his time there he qualified for a TPI pension.

Moving to Geelong in 1983, he joined the Geelong and District Sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association, serving as a volunteer for 31 years to 2014, then transferring to the RSL Geelong Sub-branch where he serves as a Volunteer Advocate and Mentor to the present day, assisting ex-service personnel to lodge claims and appeals to review boards and tribunals including retrospective claims to ComSuper. He also trains and mentors Level 2 Compensation Advocates at the Geelong Veteran Family Wellbeing Centre.
