Laura Rizzo of Luv All Coaching

Laura Rizzo, a former teacher and tennis coach, is now the owner of Luv All Coaching, where she offers professional coaching to everyone from divorcees to corporations.

You may see many people call themselves a "coach," but Laura spent the time and effort to get the professional certifications in the field.  She explains what went into that.

She's also drawn on her experience of going through two divorces to coach divorcees as they go through that very difficult process.

Research is constantly evolving about our brains and how they can physiologically affect our bodies - we talk a little bit about brain health, left brain vs right brain, and what that can mean for us in our every day lives in terms of how we react to stressful situations.   She even shares with us an exercise she uses with clients.   Just don't do it while you're driving!

Laura talks about her different workshops, everything from her saboteur workshop to her upcoming "Grow Your Inner Jedi" workshop.

Todd Fenton, Deputy City Manager of Royal Oak

Todd Fenton, Deputy City Manager of Royal Oak

The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce has a great relationship with the city itself, and a big part of that is Todd Fenton, Deputy City Manager of Royal Oak.  Todd is our guest today.

We start by exploring looking at the ways the Chamber and the City really help each other serve the residents and businesses of our community.  Todd sees the Chamber as a huge asset.  Next, we start talking about the city itself.

Todd explains what his role is on the Planning Commission, and how they aim to bring businesses to Royal Oak as well as serve the ones that are here.  Community outreach is a big part of this.

What's happening with the old Hermann's bakery?  The answer will appeal to your sweet tooth!

Downtown Royal Oak used to be thought of as a 5pm-2am area, known primarily for its nightlife.  But since the pandemic, that's changing.  More businesses and restaurants are coming downtown, making it a busy area between 9am and 5pm as well.  And there are more bars and restaurants.  Todd jokes that Royal Oak has gone from a "$5 a pitcher town" to a "$5 a pint town."

But the downtown area isn't the only area expanding in Royal Oak - the Woodward Corridor is seeing growth as well - including the Woodward Corners area set up by Beaumont.

We also ask Todd about the $28 million that Royal Oak is receiving from the federal government through the American Rescue Plan Act - and how that money can be allocated.

And of course, we cover the hot topic in town - marijuana licenses.

Finally, we ask Todd a little bit about himself.  You might be surprised to hear what line of work he was in immediately after he graduated from the University of Michigan!

Michael Pesendorfer - M3 Investment Services

Six and a half years ago, Michael Pesendorfer brought his 37 years of investment experience, and his  team at M3 Investment Services to Royal Oak. He says he's finally found a home here - both personally and professionally.  In fact, when we asked him where he likes to eat, he had a hard time choosing!

Michael started out of college working for a large investment firm, but learned that was not the best forum for him to provide the care and attention he felt his clients deserve.  We asked him about his process, the pride he takes growing the wealth of M3's clients, and his overall perspective and expectations for the market in 2022.

And yes, we even asked him about Crypto.

    Michelle Armstrong of TAG Multimedia

    Michelle Armstrong of TAG Multimedia

Michelle Armstrong of TAG Multimedia is at the forefront of internet technology - and sees where the digital landscape is going next.

In today's episode, Michelle explains how TAG creates digital versions of small businesses and their owners.  This allows your potential customers to interact with you online.  Not only does it free you up to run your business, but it provides an additional layer of safety for those who are still wary of COVID-19.

Michelle explains the differences between this "augmented reality" and virtual reality technologies, and the fact that we are used to interacting in two dimensions but can now interact in 3D.

Not only is this technology now available for small business owners, but it can provide an amazing skill for students to learn, no matter what career field they pursue.

After learning about Erin's background, we jump into the 2021 schedule, which opens with "Don't Drink The Water" September 17th.  We also discuss the season's other shows, including Cinderella, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Nine to Five.

Angela Buccellato - The Resume Rescue

Angela Buccellato - The Resume Rescue

With so much change and upheaval in the workforce since the start of the pandemic, we needed to turn to an expert.  Today we welcome Angela Buccellato of the Resume Rescue to cover all aspects of job seeking!

Angela says when you're job hunting, to avoid the "spray and pray" approach.  And she explains how to be more targeted with your search.   Part of this is networking - LinkedIn, alumni networks, you name it.

We then had to ask her a follow up question -  namely, when do you follow up after a job interview?

There's a debate on direct hires versus using recruiters, so we wanted Angela's thoughts on that.

By now, we should all know that social media posts can sink your job prospects, but you'd be surprised who is still learning that!

What exactly has the pandemic done to the workforce, and what will it look like going forward?  Angela's answers may surprise you.

Matt Lifter of Motor City Auto Spa

Matt Lifter of Motor City Auto Spa

Matt Lifter has been working with cars ever since doing detailing work in high school.   He actually had to tow a customer's vehicle just prior to our scheduled interview, so he joined us from the road.

Matt takes us through his journey from the music business back to cars, his founding of Motor City Auto Spa, and some of the more exotic vehicles he's seen, worked on, and even owned!

We cover everything from auto detailing, how to battle the damage done by Michigan winters, the details of window tinting, exotic paint schemes, and of course, the craziness of the Woodward Dream Cruise (Spoiler alert: if you haven't already booked an appointment, you may be too late.)

Mike Twydell - TwyFit Personal Fitness

As we hit the middle of June, Mike Twydell of TwyFit Personal Fitness is our guest today on the ROCC Pod.

Mike's got a fascinating story, going from an out-of-shape smoker in college to participating in professional bodybuilding competitions.  He tells us how he made that change, and how he eventually found his calling in the field of personal training.

Mike knows that personal training is not something that many folks can afford, so he started his Girls That Curl program - where small groups split the cost of training sessions.

Mike and his team work with all kinds of athletes - from football players to even skateboarders - and we delve into some of the individualized attention and needs different people have.  We also cover the myth that you can lose weight with exercise alone.  Diet is so important.

TwyFit also works with students of all ages, offering many summer programs.

Leah Diederichs of the American Lung Association

Today, Jon, Lisa, Andrea, and Trish are joined by Leah Diderichs of the American Lung Association - a group that, as you may imagine, has had a very busy year.

The American Lung Association's mission is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.  There are many ways they do this - and one is coming up May 23rd- the Fight for Air Climb.  Leah walks us through the event's history, and how, during the pandemic, they've moved the event from downtown skyscrapers to Comerica Park.  She also explains how to get involved - either as a participant or a volunteer.

Leah also explains what the ALA is doing in regard to COVID-19, providing valuable information and resources to the public.

We preview this fall's event, the Lung Force Walk (tentatively scheduled for the Detroit Zoo).  And, randomly, we end up in a discussion of Michigan skiing.

    Nick Moritz of Toad Opener

    Nick Moritz of Toad Opener

Nick Moritz was actually living in China when COVID-19 started.  He quickly came home to Michigan, and of course the pandemic followed.  While overseas,  he saw expensive "foot door openers" that had to be drilled into expensive industrial doors.

Nick figured he could create a similar product here, but using adhesives instead of expensive drilling.  He soon teamed up with 3D printing expert Cliff Wells, who had also returned home from China.  Nick takes us through the journey of this new and innovative company, working with 3M, and eventually developing a customizable product that prevents us from having to touch germ-ridden door handles.

Applications of Toad Opener also go beyond COVID-19.  Industrial use of this product can also cut down on cold and flu germs, MRSA, and really anyone that doesn't want to touch a dirty door handle.

Our co-host Andrea Arndt also talks with Nick about copyrights, patents, and the challenges of a company like his.

"An Eternal King is Coming to Earth" (John 1:1-14)

"An Eternal King is Coming to Earth" (John 1:1-14)

    I.    Christ the Eternal. (John 1)

    a. He pre-existed creation. (John 1:1)

    b. He was the agent of creation (John 1:3, Colossians 1:16).

    c. He is the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8,  22:13).

     II.  Christ the God-Man. (John 1:1, 14).

    A. What doesn't this mean?

    1. He was NOT half-man and half-God.

    2. He was NOT just a man.

    3. He was NOT just divine.

    4. He did not “become” divine.

    B. What DOES this mean?

    1. He has two eternal and distinct natures (Colossians 2:9).

    2. He became flesh during the incarnation (Matthew 1:18-24).

    3. God has literally walked in your shoes (Hebrews 4:15)

      | GOD | MAN

     | He is worshiped (Matt. 2:2, 11; 14:33) | He worshiped the Father (John 17)
    | He was called God (John 20:28; Heb. 1:8) | He was called man (Mark 15:39; John 19:5)
    | He was called Son of God (Mark 1:1) | He was called Son of Man (John 9:35-37)
    | He is prayed to (Acts 7:59) | He prayed to the Father (John 17)
    | He is sinless (1 Pet. 2:22; Heb. 4:15) | He was tempted (Matt. 4:1)
    | He knows all things (John 21:17) | He grew in wisdom (Luke 2:52)
    | He gives eternal life (John 10:28) | He died (Rom. 5:8)
    | All the fullness of deity dwells in Him (Col. 2:9) | He has a body of flesh and bones (Luke 24:39)

"Let your Light Shine" (Matthew 5:13-16)

"Let your Light Shine" (Matthew 5:13-16)

Because we are a church seeking truth by embracing an authentic relationship with Jesus, we share the gospel locally and abroad.

     I. We are called to be a spiritual "preservative" locally and abroad. (vs. 13)

    a. We must retain our flavor

    b. We must avoid pollution

II. We are called to be a light in the darkness locally and abroad (vs. 14)

III. We are called to be unashamed of our love for Christ locally and abroad (vv. 15-16)

    a. Let others know who you serve

    b. Show others who you serve

    c. Don't forget who you serve

Conclusion: How is your light shining to those around you?

"There's a Place at the Table for You" (Acts 11:1-18)

"There's a Place at the Table for You" (Acts 11:1-18)

God is drawing the most unlikely of people into serving for His Kingdom, including you.

     I. We are called to minister to the most unlikely of people, even when others will criticize us. (vv. 1-3)

    a. Loving others will get people talking.

    b. Loving others will bring you criticism.

II. We are called to minister to the most unlikely of people, especially when God will direct us. (vv. 4-10)

    a. Like Peter, we must challenge our presuppositions of others.

    b. Like Peter, we must make sure our views are in fact the Biblical view.

III. We are called to minister to the most unlikely of people, and not try to get in God's way. (vv. 11-18)
