Scandal, Murder and the Duke of Cumberland
    News of the Times Episode 202 | 1810 & 1833
Ernest Augustus, The Duke of Cumberland, had a spectacular chequered life.  In the time of King George III, The Duke of Cumberland was generally reviled by press and public, and some would say his own royal family.  He had many a scandal including an alleged attack in the dead of night with a cutlas by a supposed disgruntled valet who then allegedly improbably killed himself so deeply he nearly severed his own head.
Some 20 years later, another long-term employee of the Duke allegedly committed suicide.  Losing two servants in such a dramatic manner could be considered careless…
We take a look at the history and stories surrounding the Duke of Cumberland and the infamous murder attempt and two suicides within his household as well as the highly salacious accusations hurled at him by the press.
The Duke of Cumberland, and the scandals and murder associated with him, is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

1870: The Mordaunt versus Mordaunt Scandal | Episode 126

News of the Times Episode 126 | 1870
The Mordaunt versus Mordaunt Scandal: Eccentric Sundays
In 1870, a public scandal to beat almost all public scandals of the time developed to the point where the rise of Republicanism – the overthrow of the British Monarchy – was gaining real momentum.
In high society, the case of the public divorce of a husband from his multiple cheating wife was started.  One of the potential litigants named was Bertie, or ‘Dirty Bertie’ as the press referred to him: his Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales who would later become King Edward VII.  This eccentric Sundays story has scandal, illicit affairs, royalty and insane asylums in the story of Mordaunt versus Mordaunt.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

    Some of History's Greatest Imposters

    Some of History's Greatest Imposters

There have been many impostors throughout history and in this 48th episode we deal with six of them, two related to English history and four related to Russian history. All at one time or another had many who believed in them (or at least tried to use them for advantage). All six went a long way to pulling off their ruse and we discuss many of the details in this episode.

    Episode Notes:

    • Ivan IV (the Terrible) was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 to 1547 and Czar of Russia from 1547 to 1584.
