18th Place: Runaways #1 with Adrienne Resha

18th Place: Runaways #1 with Adrienne Resha

This week it's time to find out about the secret lives of our evil parents, as we look at the comic which ended up in 18th place: Runaways #1 by Brian K. Vaughan, Adrian Alphona, David Newbold, Brian Reber and Paul Tutrone!

Runaways follows a group of kids whose parents throw a party each year: after spending time introducing each family separately, Vaughan’s script then hurls the very different children together into an awkward, tentative group as they wait for their parents’ private meal to finish. When they get bored and go eavesdrop, however, it leads to a massive surprise at the end – something you wouldn’t have expected to happen in a Marvel comic. Luckily, this week Matt is joined by special guest Adrienne Resha to talk all about it!

Adrienne Resha is an academic and comics critic whose work has been seen in Eisner-winning publications like WomenWriteAboutComics and INKS. You can find her on Twitter here!

Matt Lune is a critic and podcaster who has written for publications including PanelXPanel, The MNT and Multiversity. You can find him on Twitter here!

    Episode 257- Let's Go Camping

    Episode 257- Let's Go Camping

www.commsolutionsmn.com- Homelessness is at epidemic proportions. There are so many thoughts on how to handle it, and when government gets involved, bad ideas abound. How many stories have we seen where homeless encampments have grown in size and number, drugged out people are littering our streets with used needles, feces, and trash. Kids are having to walk right by these encampments on the way to school and back. How is that safe?

The League of MN Cities is pushing for a bill in the MN House (HR 4225) that would hinder cities in removing these encampments and force them to store their personal effects. Even in Minneapolis, residents are becoming frustrated with the growing camps. It's not all about the filth either. There have been an increased number of break-ins. Rep Rena Moran (DFL) is pushing for a bill that will make it harder to evict tenants who don't pay and harder for landlords to find out about those past evictions. California is leading the pack (of course) to make special stipulations for trans, gay, and BIPOC people regarding prostitution laws, because they are (wait for it)... racist. These kinds of policies are also causing residents and business to leave Duluth en masse. What is the best (and most humane) way to tackle this problem?

We also take a little time to discuss Vince McMahon stepping down as the Chairman of WWE, his contributions, and how wresting lost it's edge.

Today, we’ll hear how she worked through personal tragedy while having to shoot a pilot, the lesson she learned working with Sarah Paulson, and the silver lining of almost booking THIS IS US. Episode 385: If We Put "Ninja" In The Title Will More People Listen?

Episode 385: If We Put "Ninja" In The Title Will More People Listen?
SDCC has come and gone and in it's wake it left a massive amount of news, topics, and things to speculate about. A literal gold mine of content ripe for the picking just dying to be dissected and jammed into the faces of eager fans. So lets talk about Fortnite! Seriously though. There's a ridiculous amount of news from SDCC and I'm sure we'll get to that later on as things get closer to actual development. For now? We're gonna do a good, old fashioned "talk about random things we feel like talking about and hope you enjoy listening to it". Sounds like a good recipe for success, right? Anyway, this week we're talking about all insanity coming out of Twitch, Mixer, Fortnite, and Ninja in addition to a classic rant between two old dudes frustrated with the current and future state of streaming services. Enjoy! -Jr.

Cultural Brilliance heals cultures that no longer work well, establishes road maps for cultures to stay brilliant, and helps new enterprises create brilliant cultures right from the beginning. From Surviving to Thriving – How Mindfulness Saved a Recovering Jerk | Peter Callahan

From Surviving to Thriving – How Mindfulness Saved a Recovering Jerk | Peter Callahan
When Peter, Copper Beech Institute’s Leadership & Engagement Director and founder of Fresh Perspectives, introduces himself in this manner, he’s not joking. He spent much of his youth compensating for his unhappiness by building an armor around himself that left him disconnected and unable to empathize.

“I realized I was so disconnected, but I didn’t know why,” Peter said. “I finally admitted I didn’t like the way I was and that I wanted to change and connect with others.”

It was this desire for connection that launched him on a path of transformation. He’d seen loved ones undergo introspective journeys and change for the better, including his mother through her work with the 12 Steps of Al-Anon, a fellowship of families and friends of alcoholics. This planted the seed for Peter’s own contemplative work, which eventually led him to Copper Beech Institute.

“I learned of Copper Beech when I met Brandon and Susan Nappi through my wife, Mackenzie. My first retreat was with them at the Couples’ Retreat. Brandon and Susan are like family now.”

When asked what he appreciates most about Copper Beech Institute, Peter is quick to point out the authenticity and compassion inherent to the community.

“The people who work and visit Copper Beech practice what they preach,” Peter said. “When you’re here, you’re treated like a whole person, not a number. And because the size is manageable and we’re continuing to blossom, everyone can be a part of the Institute’s growth.”

In addition to his role of furthering Copper Beech’s work, Peter has partaken in the Institute’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course to further deepen his meditation practice and is pursuing MBSR teacher certification.

“I meditate every day now,” he said. “MBSR has especially helped me hear and understand my body’s signals more clearly and take better care of myself.”

For Peter, though, meditation isn’t just about himself – it’s about how he engages with the world.

“It’s great if you can sit on a mat and meditate for hours, but what if someone cuts you off in traffic? I used to have so much road rage. I would scream, flip other drivers off, tailgate them, you name it. After years of daily meditation practice and all I’ve learned at Copper Beech, when I have those urges, I now have the space to notice them, accept them, and choose how I respond to them.”

Instead of living with armor that leaves him feeling alone, Peter is now focused on leading a compassionate and purposeful life. “I just want to create as many positive ripples as I can,” he shared with a smile.

    ABOUT PETER CALAHAN

Peter loves to work with leaders, students, and entrepreneurs and together practice looking inside to discover and act on their values, meaningfully connect with others, and find fulfillment in their work and lives.

Peter holds certifications as a Professional Coach through the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching and the International Coach Federation. He has completed mindfulness teacher trainings through UMass Medical School and Mindful Schools, has a degree in Entrepreneurship and Business Management from the University of Rhode Island, and has managed and worked with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses throughout the country.

Peter has served on the board of the International Coach Federation, is a founding board member of the Entrepreneurial Center of Northwest Connecticut, is past President of the Litchfield Chapter of Business Networking International, and is a Northwest Connecticut 40 Under 40 Award winner.
