Courtney Act Looks Back on Her Life as a Drag Icon

Courtney Act Looks Back on Her Life as a Drag Icon
The drag entertainer Shane Jenek, better known to the world as Courtney Act, has lived a pretty remarkable life and she’s just getting started.

A front runner on season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Courtney’s season included many memorable people and moments that became a big part of queer culture.

But it wasn’t all fun, glitter and games. The show had issues with its lack of trans representation which put Courtney in the awkward situation of getting blocked by host RuPaul on Twitter for speaking out against the silent ban.

Ironically, today gender is more fluid than ever, and it feels like all the contestants on Drag Race are either trans or non binary.

Today Australian sensation Courtney Act joins us to give us the inside scoop on writing her new book Caught in the Act: A Memoir by Courtney Act

FOF #2991 - 16 Years of Lady Bunny on Feast of Fun
Even though Lady Bunny is legendary for her outrageous song parodies and DJ music sets, those who follow her on social media have certainly gotten a taste of her passion for talking about politics and social movements.

In fact, once you get Bunny started, just like eating, it’s hard to get her to stop.

Bun-Bun can’t help herself when talking about:
    • Bernie Sanders,
    • Democrats,
    • Republicans,
    • Bisexual Senators Who Might As Well be Republicans,
    • The Peace Movement,
    • The Military Industrial Complex,
    • The Ru Girl Industrial Complex,

And how the divas of today don’t hold a candle to the great singers of yesteryear, except for Jennifer Hudson, who people just don’t appreciate enough.

Sixteen years ago on Feast of Fun, Bunny was one of our first guests on the podcast and it’s been a thrill over the years as she returns time and time again to crack us up with stories of being a baby drag queen with RuPaul, founding Wigstock and her love of the peen.

As we celebrate 16 years and 3,000 episodes of Feast of Fun, we’ve asked one of our all time favorite drag queen guests, Miss Understood, to join us to look back at the early years of drag on TV and film.

In the 90s, Miss Understood was a regular on the daytime TV talk show circuit. When Sally Jesse Rafael or Geraldo Rivera wanted to showcase eccentric kooks from the New York City nightlife scene, Miss Understood was there in her psychedelic pink and green looks to wow the audience.

Miss Understood was cast as one of the contestants in the pageant scene in the first major Hollywood film to focus on drag queens “To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Love Julie Newmar.”

This bright colored wigged gal has been in a lot: Miss Understood was featured in the documentary Wigstock and the premier episode of Sex and the City. She was also the first drag queen we had on this podcast to talk about drag queen make up long before all the makeup tutorials made it onto the internet.

FOF #2974 - David Wojnarowicz's Art Against AIDS
At the height of the AIDS crisis of the late 80s, LGBTQ folks turned to creating art, performance and music to act-up, fight back and fight AIDS.

One of the most powerful voices during the AIDS crisis was David Wojnarowicz, an artist and activist who combined punk music, graffiti, performance, painting and photography into a body of work that celebrated the outsider while speaking out against a hateful government that allowed thousands of Americans to die from AIDS.

Today we’re talking to filmmaker Chris McKim about his new film Wojnarowicz: F**k You F*ggot F**ker. The film takes us on a thrilling journey through the AIDS epidemic as David Wojnarowicz weaponized his work to wage war on the establishment's greed and indifference until his death from AIDS in 1992 at the age of 37.

FOF #2956 - Translocas: Puerto Rican Art Gender Warriors
With the high visibility of drag queens on TV and social media and (even this podcast) there’s an idea that drag is just another form of show business, but it’s so much more.

For Puerto Rican queens or “Locas” as they are known, the call to do drag often stems from the pressure to survive as an artist in a very dangerous world.

Larry La Fountain’s new book Translocas: the Politics of Puerto Rican Drag and Trans Performance gives us a deep look at how Puerto Rican performers use drag to explore race, class, poverty and gender.

Today Larry La Fountain, professor of queer and Latinx studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor joins us to take a look at the Translocas we love: from Ru girls like Nina Flowers and Monica Beverly Hillz to trans pioneer Sylvia Rivera to other fabulous performance artists like Barbara Herr, Lady Catiria, Javier Cardona, Freddy Mercado and even Larry’s alter ego Lola Von Miramar.

    FOF #2944 - Linda Simpson’s Drag Explosion
In the mid 80s, at the height of the AIDS crisis, New York City experienced a drag revolution. Cheap rent, fabulous clubs and a wide variety of people from all around the world living shoulder to shoulder, and girdle to girdle, created a drag explosion that released a mega ton of glitter and talent, leaving in its wake a culture that embraced drag like never before.

In the center of the action was drag queen Linda Simpson, who took pictures of all the kooky kids in the club scene with her portable camera. To Linda it was all casual fun but to the rest of the world now, it’s legendary.

Best known as a journalist for her indie magazine My Comrade, Linda Simpson gathered in-depth interviews with entertainers and nightclub personalities who would have otherwise been left forgotten in the dark corners of the club.

In her new book, The Drag Explosion, Linda Simpson reveals hundreds of full color photos of the New York Drag scene of the ‘80s and '90s including many legends when they were just stepping out in high heels onto the world.

FOF #2935 - Unfolding the Gotmik T-Shirt Controversy
For 13 seasons RuPaul’s Drag Race has been bringing underground artists into the mainstream, and sometimes the world is just not ready for the gag. Disco Didn't Die, It Just Evolved Into House Music

Disco Didn't Die, It Just Evolved Into House Music
In the late 1970s radio stations were in revolt, declaring Disco music dead, culminating in the notorious Disco Demolition night at Comiskey Park, a promotional event that backfired into a full-on riot.

“Disco Sucks” became the battle cry against the decadence of the club scene, its association with gay culture and because the music genre was overexposed- people got sick of the disco beat in bubble gum ads and celebrity vanity records- even the gay robots from Star Wars had a Disco Album.

Out of the ashes of Disco’s demise, DJs in Chicago developed a new sound for a new generation which became known as House Music. This style became a hit in clubs catering to black, latino and gay folks, and is now what most electronic music is based on.

Today we’re talking to one of the pioneering DJs of House Music, Ralphi Rosario. Recently, the City of Chicago named a street after his DJ group “The Hot Mix Five” for their contribution to the international House Music scene.

Join us as Ralphi Rosario gives us some amazing stories about remixing songs for all the divas: Cher, Madonna, Donna Summer and even Jennifer Holliday.

The TV game show Match Game was canceled in 1963 for being too bland and not connecting with viewers. Figuring you couldn’t get canceled twice, the show’s writers put in cheeky questions designed to make the contestants blush at the celebrity panel’s witty banter and sexual innuendo. It won audiences back over and it stayed on the air until 1969.

The game show then brought back as Match Game 73 and was nominated for several Emmys. Its risqué humor changed the tone of daytime TV game shows forever.
