Transpiration Special: Meja Foss's Race Against Time

    Meeting Meja

Have you ever given much thought to the complex and challenging journey that comes with transitioning? What if you were not just transitioning, but doing so rapidly and globally? Meet our extraordinary guest Meja Foss, a trans woman who decided to take charge of her destiny, racing against time and borders to transition medically and surgically. A successful serial entrepreneur, Meja's journey took her from realizing her need to transition to making it a reality, showcasing her incredible resilience amidst a challenging health care system and the emotional strain of waiting for hormone replacement therapy.

Venturing through the twists and turns of her journey, Meja opens up about her gender-affirming surgeries in Seoul and Istanbul, highlighting the importance of staying longer than recommended post-surgery to prevent complications. She talks candidly about the unexpected side effects she experienced and her decision to embrace the results rather than chasing perfection. Meja also shares the emotional and psychological impacts of these procedures, particularly how her bottom surgery eased her dysphoria.

As we delve further into Meja's life, we explore her ongoing journey as a trans woman, navigating everything from the challenges of passing to contemplating the concept of a magic button to become cis. But Meja's story doesn't end with her transition - she's also a successful woman, wife, and mother. Her story is a testament to the resilience and determination of the trans community, making this episode a must-listen for anyone seeking insight into their experiences. Join us as we explore Meja's inspiring journey, and hear the invaluable advice she has to offer to other trans individuals.

    2. Deputy Director Alexandra Spitz-Oener on technology adoption and the changing nature of work

    2. Deputy Director Alexandra Spitz-Oener on technology adoption and the changing nature of work

Alexandra Spitz-Oener, Deputy Director of RFBerlin, Professor of Economics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and a research associate at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, talks about her research on how machines and workers interact in the workplace from a long term perspective. From the introduction of computers in the late 1970s and the 1980s, robots in the 1990s, to artificial intelligence in more recent time, what implications technology adoption have on the nature of work: disappearing jobs and/or arrival of new jobs, changing quality of jobs and task contents over time? Alexandra's research aims to answer questions of this type and address (lack of evidence-based) concerns over displacement of workers. Join us on this episode to learn more about the data employed, the upside and downside of technological changes, as well as challenges faced by firms in order to fully reap the benefits of machines and technologies.

Episode 2 - Building Quality Control Programs that Work!

Episode 2 - Building Quality Control Programs that Work!

Jordan Hill is a diagnostic technician with ASE Master Tech including L1 and L3 credentials. With over 23 years of experience in the industry, Jordan has worked in several shops and has developed some interesting ideas about how independent repair shops can use some of the quality-control practices commonly found in the manufacturing world. In this episode, Jordan explains how some of the self-improvement concepts often used by large corporations can be adapted to the independent repair shop environment. In the first of a two-part series, Jordan begins with a look at the Andon concept and what it can do to help improve any repair shop operation. Listen in as Jordan discusses:

    • His background and qualifications as a diagnostic technician.
    • What the Andon concept is and how it works.
    • How we think of Quality Control (QC) as the final step in a manufacturing or service procedure, when it really should be in everyone’s job description.
    • Tracing QC history to Sakici Toyoda’s automatic loom.
    • Making QC the cornerstone of your “fix-it-right-the-first-time” shop culture.
    • The advantages of adapting Andon principles into the shop production system.
    • Defining roles and responsibilities in a QC program.
