Play the Aussie Way ft. Ellie Cole, Cal Bruton & Harry

Play the Aussie Way ft. Ellie Cole, Cal Bruton & Harry

This episode of our podcast On Side talks to Play the Aussie Way campaign ambassadors, NBL legend Cal Bruton, Ellie Cole, Australia’s most decorated female Paralympian, and young soccer player Harry about the culture shift they hope to lead.

While Playing the Aussie Way means something slightly different to each of them, there are common themes – respect, inclusion, fun and trying your best.

Sixteen-year-old Harry says his enjoyment of sport changed when he took the result out of the equation.

“Last year was the first year I tried just playing for fun and I really felt more connected to the sport and felt more like I wanted to play each week and like I wanted to go to training,” he says. “So I think that's the better way to approach the game.”

Basketball coaches are renowned for histrionics, with Cal even admitting he was at the wrong end of the whistle once. The NBL Hall of Famer, who still has to deal with racism in sport, says “it's always the challenge”.

“I try to live my life to be the best possible person I can be and be a mentor and a leader for all young disadvantaged youth that are looking for an opportunity to be on the right track and grow and sport is a just a tremendous vehicle for that.”

And, while there are still challenges when it comes to racism and discrimination, sport has come a long way.

Ellie says this really hit her at the Tokyo closing ceremony.

“I was wrapping up my entire 17-year Paralympic career and I was surrounded by people who have chosen to be the best version of themselves despite what has happened to them,” she says. “That's exactly what Play the Aussie Way is about. It's about everyone having access to an opportunity like what I had.”

RMC Briefing: Church of England after February 2024 General Synod

RMC Briefing: Church of England after February 2024 General Synod

The Church of England has been boiling over in recent months, with divisions on same-sex blessings and frustration at the debacle over safeguarding, with talk of parishes withholding money and calls for an alternative set of bishops. But the February 2024 General Synod struck a different tone. There were some issues on which the whole synod agreed, such as more churches on housing estates. And the clergy felt appreciated, with open discussion on their pay and pensions and moves to deal with rebellious church councils.

But on same-sex blessings, the synod is stuck, unable to find two thirds in favour of any current proposal, so the lead bishop appealed for peace and reconciliation and agreed to provide clear proposals on how the church can stay together. The church’s bureaucratic failures on safeguarding were displayed in two highly critical reports, and the synod decided to move forward with a plan, despite a disagreement over the way this would be done.

In this Religion Media Centre briefing, Rosie Dawson spoke to some of the leading voices from the synod to find out if a page had been turned and a split averted. Her guests included: Prof Helen King; Ven Dr Miranda Threlfall-Holmes; Rev Dr Andrew Goddard; Rev John Bavington, Great Horton, Bradford; Susie Leafe, Anglican Futures; Debbie Buggs, Church Pastoral Aid Society; and Paul Waddell, representing Southwark diocese.

On UPI Scams: You too are responsible for your money!

On UPI Scams: You too are responsible for your money!
In this episode of Mint Techcetra, hosts Shouvik, Leslie and Deepti discuss OTP scams, and the reasons why RBI instructed banks to stop relying on OTPs sent via SMS for authentication. They list out the various alternatives - suggested by cyber security experts - that the banks can adopt instead. Simultaneously, they list out what individual users like us can do to secure our money. On a lighter note, they compare the Meta Quest 3 and the Apple Pro Vision Headsets, their professional applications, and whether or not an amateur tech enthusiast like Deepti would like to buy it. Additionally, they share their mutual ridicule of Mark Zuckerberg for touting himself as a tech reviewer. But, to balance it out, they then discuss how such technologies mature, sighting an example of Rayban's Meta Smart Glasses. Tune in to be a step ahead of your peers when it comes to safeguarding your money during online transactions and to become a bit more tech-smart!

RMC Briefing: The Alexis Jay report on safeguarding in the Church of England

RMC Briefing: The Alexis Jay report on safeguarding in the Church of England

A report by Prof Alexis Jay into safeguarding in the Church of England recommends two new charities should be set up to deliver and scrutinise safeguarding operations, and they should be entirely separate from the church. It says the current safeguarding system is “flawed and cannot be sufficiently improved whilst it remains within church oversight” and needs to fundamentally change to restore the confidence of victims, survivors and clergy.

In this Religion Media Centre briefing, our panel discuss the report’s tough criticism of the current safeguarding system on seven key issues including inconsistent systems across all 42 dioceses, failure to collect data and lack of independent scrutiny. They consider how this major change can be implemented when confidence and trust are at an all-time low. And they voice complaints that this is another structural change which will be forced through like those which failed before, and that the same people involved in the collapse of the last system have been assembled to oversee the setting up of the new charities, with an absence of survivors at the heart.

Ruth Peacock hosts, with guests: Julie Conalty, the Bishop of Birkenhead; Rev Dr Ian Paul, member of the Archbishops’ Council; Andrew Graystone, advocate for survivors of church abuse; Jane Chevous, co-founder of Survivors Voices; and Justin Humphries, CEO of Thirtyone Eight, a Christian organisation dealing with safeguarding.

Last week we began reflecting on recent events of the substantiated allegations against Mike Pilavachi, founder and leader of Soul Survivor, a large successful Christian conference that ran for just under 30 years until recently. We focused our last episode on why we need to be putting survivors first in situations where abuse has taken place.

This week we are exploring the impact this news has had on us as youth leaders and individuals who may taken taken many young people to Soul Survivor events and possibly attended as a delegate when we were a teenager. Rachel chatted to Rev. Dr. Kate Middleton about what it means to try and process our collective grief and find constructive ways to move forward.
