From Actor to Director: Gaining Clarity for Commercial Actors with Nathan Caywood

Writer, director, cinematographer and actor, Nathan Caywood is a 36 year old, corn fed midwesterner who moved to L.A. nearly 15 years ago to do improv comedy. He studied at and performed UCB, iO, and the Groundlings and through that experience became a commercial actor. But during his journey of acting in dozens of commercials, he fell in love with cameras, lenses and lighting. Nathan started directing sketches and short films around UCB with his now writing and directing partner, Echo Kellum. But it wasn't until he started working in a rental house that he realized he was truly in love with the art of cinematography.

The Do-Or-Die Stakes Of The Hollywood Strikes

The Do-Or-Die Stakes Of The Hollywood Strikes

On this week’s Lever Time, David Sirota is joined by The Bear writer and Writers Guild of America (WGA) union member Alex O’Keefe to discuss the stakes of the current Hollywood strike. The WGA has been on strike since early May after failing to secure a contract with the country’s major film and television producers. This past week, SAG-AFTRA, the union representing film and TV actors, joined the strike after failing to secure their own contract, putting Hollywood on standstill for the first time since 1960.

Over the last decade, the economy of Hollywood has been completely upended by the advent of streaming services like Netflix, as well as the consolidation of major entertainment companies such as the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery. This has led to a “content arms race” as companies have competed to amass their own libraries of movies and TV shows. The result has been a shift to faster and cheaper film productions, which have adversely affected almost all of Hollywood’s workers.

In the face of such rapid changes, David speaks with Alex about what the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are demanding from the studios. This includes increased pay for shorter production schedules, residual payments for content on streaming platforms, and protections against AI programs taking over their jobs. The two discuss what’s at stake if workers’ demands aren’t met, and whether or not the unions are being “unrealistic,” as Disney CEO Bob Iger recently put it.

    45. Megan Frye: Living On The Sagittarius-Gemini Axis

    45. Megan Frye: Living On The Sagittarius-Gemini Axis

What does it mean to live on the Sagittarius - Gemini axis? How do we cultivate a relationship with their planetary rulers, Jupiter and Mercury? How can working with Sagittarius and Gemini aid us in exploring our own subconscious?

In this episode, my friend and partner in conversation, Megan Frye, and I weaved a conversation on the Sagittarius and Gemini archetypes. As we are leaving Sagittarius season, my hope is that this poetic, free-flowing, and expansive conversation will assist you in reflecting the themes these two archetypes bring up during this season.

We discussed big, edgy topics of the construction of reality, of entertaining questions and possibilities without necessarily arriving at answers. Throughout our conversation, Megan and I brought in Odin and Santa Claus, seen through the lens of personal experiences and observations about the collective. Finally, we also discussed what it means to explore our personal underworld through the lens of Megan's work as a hypnotherapist.

    Here’s Megan’s bio:

Megan Frye is an independent writer and translator. An eternal student of photography, astrology, music and yoga, she came into hypnotherapy during the year of her Gemini nodal return.

You could say hypnotherapy is her B-side, but as any audiophile knows, the B-side is often the best side. Megan spends most of her time outdoors, on the road and in loving theta with the world and beings around her.

She is honored to guide clients through therapeutic hypnosis, which she believes to be one of the most rapidly transformational healing modalities available. Her greatest teachers are nature, the subconscious mind and those who fearlessly and compassionately embrace their shadow.

Megan is a Cancer rising, Aries sun and Aquarius moon. She has a Sagittarius stellium and loves her Taurus placements most of all. She grew up in Michigan and, like a hermit crab, has called many places home and is always looking for the next best place. Blame in on the Sag. She is the proud co-founder of Holistic Soul Project: an international, nature-focused, in-person collaborative and transformational mystic retreat experience.

You can find Megan and her work on her website and her Instagram.

Bayonetta 3 Controversy - Voice Actors and Fair Payment

Bayonetta 3 Controversy - Voice Actors and Fair Payment

This week on Some Patches Required, Our intrepid hosts tackle a slightly out-of-date topic that sends them down a rabbit hole that may just take them a few months to get out of.* Of course, the inciting incident is the controversy surrounding Bayonetta 3 and the voice actress who claimed that Platinum Games offered her a paltry sum to reprise her iconic role.

The aforementioned rabbit hole is a deep dive into how voice actors are paid throughout the industry, as well as an evaluation of how we quantify value in game development. There's also an important announcement towards the end, so make sure to stick around for the whole show.

    Please, enjoy.
