Lead Vocalist/Bassist Chris McLernon talks New Band Kinell, New Music/Videos, Thin Lizzy, and more!
Episode # 208 Lead Vocalist/Bassist Chris McLernon talks New Band Kinell, New Music/Videos, Thin Lizzy, and more! Kinell formed as a challenge: Can you write and record original songs in the spirit and style of a band you love and still create something new? Saigon Kick bassist Chris McLernon and Action City Blackout guitarist Collin DeBruhl wanted to find out, starting with Thin Lizzy, Irish-born rockers who rumbled through the ‘70s and ‘80s on a mix of catchy songs and raffish charm that resonated on both sides of the Atlantic and influenced countless musicians. After demoing a handful of tracks, McLernon and DeBruhl had the makings of a forward-looking sound that built on classic trademarks: twinned guitars, rock ’n’ roll bravado, irresistible hooks and a poet’s ear for lyrics and mood. They had a name, Kinell, a shortened version of an expression you’ve probably uttered yourself in moments of amazement or annoyance. Seeking to fill out the rhythm section, Kinell enlisted a revolving quartet of phenomenal drummers: Barry Kerch (Shinedown), Ricky Sanders (Saigon Kick, STA), Eric Rickert (Souls Harbor, Skin Tight) and Marc Danzeisen (Riverdogs, Little Caesar), playing as only they could and collectively giving the songs punch and swing. The result is Kinell’s energized and outgoing debut, “Crash. Burn. Rebirth.” Produced by McLernon and mixed by multiplatinum producer Eric Bass, “Crash. Burn. Rebirth.” celebrates the past without being trapped by it. --------- Chris McLernon - bass, guitars, lead vocals Collin DeBruhl - guitar, vocals Barry Kerch - drums on Take It All, What Have I Done, Kingpin Marc Danzeisen - drums on What Might Have Been, That’s The Way Thing Are, Forever After, Easy Come and Easy Go Rick Sanders - drums on Spatial Survival, Take Me Home Eric Rickert - drums on Say Goodbye Additional riot vocals - Ron Redick, Amy Haines, Laura Vanadore, Jack Hunter, Emily Richards Produced by Chris McLernon Mixed by Eric Bass Additional engineering by Rick Sanders, Eric Rickert, Barry Kerch and Marc Danzeisen Mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound Artwork by Robert Merrick All songs ASCAP 2021

Ep. 160: Grave Mistake: SAIGON KICK Shoulda Been Huge!!!

Ep. 160: Grave Mistake: SAIGON KICK Shoulda Been Huge!!!

This week is our 21st installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of another band that fits into our category of being an “in-betweener”: the amazingly awesome SAIGON KICK! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. Like their touring buddies Extreme, they got a major hit with a ballad in the early 90s and got pigeonholed as a ballad band when they weren’t that at all. We think this band should have been alongside Alice In Chains and STP… They Shoulda Been Huge!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show before and exist in a category that we discussed at length back in Episode 133 – The Inbetweeners. They’re from Robert’s home state of Florida, but will our Florida-Man agree with Kevin’s assessment and status of “Shoulda Been Huge”??? Have a listen and find out for yourself.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Saigon Kick – “Coming Home” from Saigon Kick (1991)
    2. Saigon Kick – “Hostile Youth” from The Lizard (1992)
    3. Saigon Kick – “On And On” from Water (1993)
    4. Saigon Kick – “Eden” from Devil In The Details (1995)
    5. Saigon Kick - “Dizzy’s Vine” from Moments From The Fringe (1997)
    6. Saigon Kick – “Solitary Jerk” from Bastards (1999)
    7. Super Transatlantic – “Shuttlecock” from Shuttlecock (2000)

Ep. 144: Shallow Graves: Diggin' 2022 - It Came From A Podcast!!!

The floodgates that was the pandemic has been completely opened this year, and we have been submerged in tons of new Rock n’ Punk n’ Metal. Typically, I recognize all of the amazing recorded output of the current year as a solo episode between Christmas and New Years. However, there are just too many great releases this year to wait until December. This week all of these tunes have come from or been influenced by our brethren in the rock n’ roll podcast community!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we look at an amazing year of releases for the world of rock n’ punk n’ metal. We specifically went to the deep well of all the amazing podcasts that we listen to and promote every week for the content of this show! Go listen to all of the shows we mention (after you finish ours)!

    Ep. 133: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s

    Ep. 133: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we’ve created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard-rockin' 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Atomic Opera – “Joy Ride” from For Madmen Only (1994)
    2. Crimson Glory – “Dance With Fire” from Strange And Beautiful (1991)
    3. King Of Kings – “Open Your Arms” from Who’s Your Guru? (1992)
    4. The Awful Truth – “Circle” from The Awful Truth (1989)
    5. Damn The Machine – “Lonesome God” from Damn The Machine (1993)
    6. Mind Over Four – “12 Days Of Wind” from The Goddess (1990)
    7. Saigon Kick – “Torture” from Water (1994)

Ep. 123: Grave Mistake: WARRIOR SOUL Shoulda Been Huge!!! Pt.2! Part

This week we continue our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is Part 2 of our exploration and exploitation of the sleazy Detroit Punk meets NY Metal sounds of the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge during the first decade of their career. This time we unearth the second half of their rock n’ roll road trip with the whiskey-soaked spewing of tunes from 2009 through their recent release in 2022.

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show already in episodes 33, 83 and 119. An American alternative metal band, formed by lead singer, songwriter, producer, and painter: Kory Clarke. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation have never been recognized to the degree that it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!

    Songs this week include:

Welcome to yet another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This one has been on Kevin’s mind since episode 1 of the podcast! They just released a brand new studio album, so it is absolutely time for us to explore the band with a purpose: anti-big government / anti-establishment - - - sleazy Detroit Punk and NY Metal; the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! A band that straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge with a unique style that was dangerous, unpredictable, and should have been huge!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured twice on the show already in episodes 33 and 83. Ep. 107: Shallow Graves: Diggin' 2021

Ep. 107: Shallow Graves: Diggin' 2021

Kevin is on his own again… While 2020 was a rotten year, it did allow artists time off the road to focus on giving us a plethora of albums in the world of Rock n’ Punk n’ Metal in 2021. This year was “unpredictable” at best, and like we stated last year: Nothing gets us through hard times like music! Some of these groups and albums we’ve talked about before, but we thought it was worth the time to recognize all of the amazing recorded output of 2021!

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or grouping of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we look back on another tumultuous year that had its ups and downs, but mostly ups for the world of rock n’ punk n’ metal (minus the touring). In celebration of the New Year, we wanted to find some nuggets of joy from the last 12-months. We hope everyone’s families are safe, and that you are able to take some time to kick back and rock with us! Happy New Year everyone!

Ep. 89: Rock iNobscuria Pod 2021 Part I

What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal. We are super-stoked to go to the Rock N Pod in Nashville, TN this year! What is it you ask??? Rock N Pod is a unique annual event bringing together rock fans, artists, podcasters, and vendors for events that celebrate the past, promote the present, and look to the future of rock n’ roll. This episode is our preparation episode. Next week we will talk about our overall experience at the expo, and hear from several of the artists featured in this week’s episode!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Talas – “High Speed On Ice” from If We Only Knew Then What We Know Now…(1998)
    2. Axis – “Juggler” from It’s A Circus World (1978)
    3. SABER TIGER – “Hard Wire” from Project One (1997)
