The Miners Who Fooled Millionaires: The Great Diamond Hoax

The Miners Who Fooled Millionaires: The Great Diamond Hoax

During the 19th century it seemed like the American West held endless possibilities for great wealth, and Americans were looking for that next big thing. Two Kentucky swindlers, taking advantage of gemstone fever, lured some of the country's biggest bankers and businnessmen -- and the founder of Tiffany & Co. -- into a jewel con with claims of having discovered a large deposit of diamonds. The value of their diamond mine would have exceeded $86 million in today's money. If it had been real.

Carol Platt Liebau: Passive Acceptance of Crime is Un-American

Carol Platt Liebau: Passive Acceptance of Crime is Un-American

One of the basic duties of government—at any level—is providing security for its citizens and their property. How disgraceful that some city governments are failing miserably in this fundamental task.

Last week, the San Francisco Chronicle asked its readers if city residents should just tolerate burglaries as part of city life, and instead focus on making their homes more burglary proof. In a similar vein, Los Angeles authorities are telling robbery victims they should “cooperate and comply” with thieves, and simply report crimes later. Good luck getting George Soros-installed LA District Attorney George Gascon to prosecute them.

This passive acceptance of crime is un-American and wrong. We don’t let law-abiding citizens to be victimized by thieves: our streets don’t belong to the criminals. Instead, we hire police to apprehend the wrongdoers, and then we prosecute them, and then we put them in jail. That’s the way it works in a country bound by the rule of law.

The Rick Barry Show - San Francisco Chronicle's Connor Letourneau

The Rick Barry Show - San Francisco Chronicle's Connor Letourneau

NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry and award winning journalist Cyrus Saatsaz welcomed the San Francisco Chronicle's Golden State Warriors' beat reporter Connor Letourneau who talked about why Kevin Durant left the Warriors, how Letourneau utilizes social media and if he's into "NBA Twitter," whether Steve Kerr's security blanket comments in regard to Stephen Curry were disrespectful to the superstar, who is deserving of the MVP and Rookie of the Year Awards, and if the Warriors were calculated in deciding on when Stephen Curry would return to the team. Plus Cyrus put Rick on the 24 second shot clock and asked him who the greatest small forward is in the history of the game.

Soleil Ho is Taking on the Bay Area

Soleil Ho is Taking on the Bay Area

Soleil Ho is the newly minted restaurant critic for the San Francisco Chronicle – making her one of the youngest in her field, and perhaps the first millennial restaurant critic for a major US publication. While pondering her newfound position (she might be the only millennial actually capable of killing Applebee's), Soleil is more focused on a more practical task: finding an apartment and making the move to the Bay Area. She sat down with Caity Moseman Wadler and Kat Johnson of HRN to talk about how she's planning to take on the Bay Area's food scene once she hits the ground running at the Chronicle.
