    The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders

    The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders
The Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders remain some of the Bay Area’s most baffling unsolved crimes. At least six women and girls were killed in the span of a few years, all of their bodies dumped nude on the sides of roads in Sonoma County, and all of them missing some personal item.

Special: Eden Stein of Secession Art and Design

Special: Eden Stein of Secession Art and Design

Like many businesses, Secession Art and Design had to pivot in 2020.

In this special episode between seasons, Secession's founder, Eden Stein, shares stories of opening a gallery in the Mission/Bernal 15 years ago. Starting Aug. 4 and running through Aug. 7, Secession will celebrate 15 years of business with a four-day pop-up up the hill on Cortland. Details about the event can be found below and on Secession's site.

Eden grew up in Santa Rosa and moved to The City in 1999. In her hometown, she did a zine for many years called 7th Street. Her work on the zine helped her travel the country and to Europe.

When she moved to San Francisco, she ended up on Mission Street across from El Rio. She went to SF State and worked at The Drug Store, which back in the day was a vintage store. Eden rented a booth there and sold vintage jewelry. It was her first inspiration to working with artists as a business.

During this time, Eden became a teacher at a pre-school in The City. She got close with some of the parents, even nannying a little bit. One of the parents owned an architecture firm on Mission Street. He offered that space for Eden to do holiday art pop-ups. She was also selling jewelry, both vintage and some she made herself, at street fairs around town. These were the seeds of what would later become Secession.

The original location opened in 2007. Then, in 2014, Eden lost her lease and miraculously managed to find a new spot a little further north on Mission. There's a fun overlap with Season 4 guest of the show Emmy Kaplan in the story of Secession's move.

Earlier this year, after nearly two years of moving the gallery and events online, Eden gave up on her shift to things like 20-minute goat hugs in the gallery. The pandemic proved that her family's spot a few blocks from the gallery was too small, and an opportunity for them to move back to her hometown opened up.

But that wasn't the way she wanted Secession to go out.

As mentioned earlier, from August 4 through 7 on Cortland Street, Eden will be hosting a pop-up to celebrate 15 years of Secession Art and Design. Details:

    Holiday Travels in California

    Holiday Travels in California

On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson learns about a few jolly ways to enjoy the holidays in the Golden State, from embracing the snowy vibes of the High Sierra to taking in the sparkling lights—and sparkling wines—of Sonoma County.

First, Johnson talks to Sonoma Magazine Dining Editor Heather Irwin, who highlights four distinctive towns that boast all sorts of holiday fun. In Santa Rosa, for instance, visitors can skate on Snoopy's Home Ice and then nosh on a seasonal favorite: tamales. Healdsburg, on the other hand, is a fantastic place to shop for hard-to-please people on your list and Petaluma is a Mayberry-like city that features abundant craft fairs and festive decorations.

Next, Johnson connects with Vincenzo Giammanco, who is bringing actual snow—and more than one million twinkling lights—to Ventura and Del Mar. The producer of the Snow n Glow Holiday Festival says 70-degree temps and sunshine won't melt the fun, so visitors can enjoy traditional winter activities like snow tubing and sledding, and they can even reserve a private igloo.

Finally, Johnson chats with Brendan Madigan, who owns the Tahoe City outfitter Alpenglow Sports. Madigan notes that though downhill skiing and snowboarding reign supreme in the region, there are plenty of other activities to consider—from window shopping in quaint villages to snowshoeing in the back country.

S3E25, Part 1: Dave Budworth on Leaving and Returning to The City

S3E25, Part 1: Dave Budworth on Leaving and Returning to The City

Dave Budworth's great-grandfather, who trained in Allsace, had a butcher shop in San Francisco at Polk and Green more than a century ago.

In this episode, Dave the Butcher, as he's known, talks about growing up in Santa Rosa. His mom exposed him to culture, but also dog shows, which formed the backdrop of Dave's first impressions of San Francisco. Dave tells stories of a trip to Australia when he was a young man that contextualized his Western privilege.

He came back to The City and fell into butchery. He describes the old-school mentality of the trade that he learned from, and he ends the podcast reflecting on what that means.

We recorded this podcast during quarantine in San Francisco in May 2020.

The Kincade Fire, which began on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019 in Geyserville, CA has spread south to Windsor, and yes, close to the northern part of Santa Rosa. Because of the danger that it presents to my home, studio, and two cats, Theresa and I are flying out of Maui right away to deal with the situation. This podcast shares some insight to the challenges at hand.

Brian Rashap is a Production Manager, Tour Manager, bass tech and bass player, currently handling PM and Tech duties for Phil Lesh, as well as playing bass in the Mother Hips.

A musician since his formative years in Southern California, it was a last minute jam with the bass that forever changed Brian’s focus from guitar to bass. Even though Brian was influenced by a wide range of artists as he came into his own as a player, the music of the Grateful Dead was always a constant staple, as was a popular band that blossomed onto the scene in the ‘90’s, The Mother Hips. It’s not lost on Brian how the mysteries of life’s winding roads have now led him to be at the epicenter of the very groups he once listened to obsessively.

Perhaps my favorite part of his story though, is a life transition that occurred several years ago, when the stars conspired to change his course, and set him squarely on his destiny.

I caught-up with Brian via Skype from his home in Santa Rosa, CA, where he narrowly escaped the wildfires that ravaged so much of the area.
