Santeria and the American South | SAAJ .070

In this episode, the team begins with the latest news from the world of archaeology concerning the controversial dating of the Gunung Padang complex in Indonesia. This enigmatic site has been at the center of international discussion for several years with clear lines of delineation being drawn between supporters of its extreme antiquity and those who dispute its authenticity as a 20 thousand-plus-year-old site.

Next, we are joined by renowned cultural anthropologist Anthony Kail for an in-depth discussion about his new book Fieldwork with the Saints: An Ethnographic Journey into Santeria in the American South.

Anthony Kail serves as President of AnthroFolk Research Associates. Anthony Kail is a cultural anthropologist and writer. Kail has researched magico-religious cultures for more than thirty years. His work has taken him from Santeria ceremonies in Cuba to Haitian Botanicas in Harlem and Spiritual Churches in East Africa. He has lectured at hundreds of universities, conferences, and public safety agencies. Kail has been featured on CNN Online, the History Channel, and numerous radio, television, and print outlets.

He is the author of several books including A Secret History of Memphis Hoodoo from The History Press and Magico-Religious Groups and Ritualistic Activities: A Guide for First-Responders from CRC Press. Kail is an anthropology instructor at Southern New Hampshire University.

128: Gluttony - Adolfo Constanzo and Drug Cartel Folk Saint Worship

128: Gluttony - Adolfo Constanzo and Drug Cartel Folk Saint Worship

The cult-like worship of Santa Muerte by vicious drug lords and cartels alike....using the Saint of Death for various justifications in their mind... she will protect them from having a harsh death themselves though they are literally disposing of bodies in acid, she is guidance for them when they traffic millions of dollars worth of drugs, and kill their rivals, her statue often being placed at gruesome death scenes.

Adolfo de Jesús Constanzo was an American serial killer, drug dealer and cult leader who led an infamous drug-trafficking and occult gang in Matamoros, Mexico that was dubbed the "Narcosatanists" by the media - his cult members knew him as "The Godfather"

Mark Kilroy was a pre-med student at UT Austin and was sadly abducted off the streets of Matamoros on spring break with his childhood friends. His tragic death and investigation lead to the uncovering of 13 more bodies found at Constanzo's ranch buried in shallow graves. While Mark drew authorities attention it's important to remember the names of the others eventually named....and honor the unnamed and the never reported even missing...

They deserve their stories to be told as well.

Here are the names of the other identified victims buried at the ranch along with Mark Kilroy:

    Ernesto Rivas Diaz, 23

    Victor Sauceda Galvan, 22

    Ruben Vela Garza, 30

    Gilberto Garza Sosa, early 20s

Santa Muerte, An Otherworldly Cult (Santa Muerte, Un Culto de Otro Mundo)

Santa Muerte, An Otherworldly Cult (Santa Muerte, Un Culto de Otro Mundo)

Since primitive times, man has sought to learn more about the “beyond” – those gods or other supernatural beings that are said to be in other dimensions or worlds we cannot access until we die. In the case of Latin America, a great number of such gods have caused wonder among many civilizations.

In modern times, one such interesting goddess exists, whom is related to death in such an intrinsic way that she is known as “La Santa Muerte” or “The Holy Death”, and both worshiped and prayed to by masses of believers. In this episode of the Learn Spanish with Stories podcast, we learn more about the cult of La Santa Muerte and just exactly who she is and how her worshippers continue to grow all over the Latin American region.

Falling In Love with Jarina De Marco

Jarina De Marco makes an appearance on Mujeres In Media to chat with Jackie Quinones about music, boys, sex, history, & more.

✨Plus, get exclusive behind the scenes info on Jarina De Marco’s latest single “ELECTRICO,” along with a sneak peek of the song.✨

    ——

Dominican and Brazilian recording artists Jarina De Marco embodies the sound of the multi-ethnic future. Her work definitely transcends categories and borders. She is a creative visionary who sings in four languages; English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Jarina spearheads all aspects of her project: songwriting, production, visual design, and video direction. As an outspoken advocate of women's rights and human/gender equality, Jarina's music is a unique blend of global consciousness and global rhythms. She simultaneously supports the message of resistance, while creating a colorful sound entirely her own.

In creating an affinity between genres, Jarina de Marco's genre-spanning behavior proves there are no creative process boundaries. With folkloric ancestral sounds derived from African and Indigenous communities of the Dominican Republic and Brazil, and the deep Jazz and flirty pop that enamored her youth, Jarina de Marco's distinctive sound amplifies citizens of the world. Her contribution to the music industry and Latinx community is one that has made an impact. Motivated by her identity's layered realities and the political and social complexities in the community, the multilingual singer-songwriter, and visual artist can infuse various styles that transcend languages and borders and carry social-consciousness.

Due to popular demand, she drops the Vida-popularized track "Electrico" September 29th. The song is one of the many tracks she created working closely with ‘Vida’ show creator Tanya Saracho, curating beats, sounds, and wording for specific scenes and characters. Her upcoming project “Caribbean All-inclusive Luxury”, a spoof of the many hotels that exist in the Dominican Republic, is set to drop in 2021. It will be the first project in which the artist emphasizes love, romance, and intimacy in her lyrics and topics.

Adolfo Constanzo was told from a very early age that he was special. His mother was a Santerian Priestess who knew her son could see the future. As an adult, Adolfo used this to establish himself as a famed sorcerer who would sacrifice animals to provide protection to clients.
