This Year In Music (feat. Kelela, Sam Sanders, & Santigold)

Welcome to our first ever year end special, ‘This Year In Music with Hanif Abdurraqib.’ December is the perfect time to look back on all the incredible music that has been released over the past year: the songs that moved us to dance, and the songs that helped us endure. In this hour-long deep dive, we'll review the musical highlights of 2022 and make predictions about the future of music in 2023 together with special guests Kelela, Sam Sanders, and Santigold.

    Credits:
This show is produced by work by work: Scott Newman, Jemma Rose Brown, Kathleen Ottinger, Rhiannon Corby and by Hanif Abdurraqib. The show is mixed by Sam Bair. Extra gratitude to Edwin Ochoa and Jason Saldanha and the team at PRX and of course, Joe Dawson and Saidah Blount at Sonos.

    Santigold's elevation

    Santigold's elevation

I still remember the first time I heard Santigold. It was like a bolt from the blue, an upload to Myspace that sounded like nothing else around.

The trilling high vocal, that deep bassy ownership of song. She came onto the scene demanding to be noticed, and I stood to attention with my ears wide open.

Her debut album would be a big hit, and I’d soon learn her backstory; in punk bands, working at labels, understanding the wild 360 of the music industry and spitting it back and making it her own. Santigold has always done it differently, and always been one of my favourite people to chat music with, which is why I asked her to Take 5.

From Jimi Hendrix to John Coltrane, hear the songs that elevate Santi White, and the pure poetry of her telling you why.

    • Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
    • Too $hort – Gettin’ It (ft Parliament Funkadelic)
    • Nina Simone - I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free
    • John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (Pt 1)
    • Otis Redding – A Change Is Gonna Come

    Episode 29 – Velvet Negroni

    Episode 29 – Velvet Negroni
After dabbling in several projects spanning multiple genres, the Minneapolis-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Nutzman seems to have finally found his groove as Velvet Negroni. His the future-forward R&B has attracted the attention of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Tame Impala and Kanye West. In the podcast, he talks about how his access to pop music was restricted growing up, what it's like to be nominated by Santigold for the new platform Shure24 and how he describes his sound to Uber drivers.
