Episode 56: “You’re Thriving with an Incurable Disease, What Now?” with Kristen Gray

Episode 56: “You’re Thriving with an Incurable Disease, What Now?” with Kristen Gray
In this episode, myself and Kristen Gray will discuss her experience as a determined young mother who ended up being diagnosed with a disease that would either kill her or she would learn to thrive with it. She knew it was her choice! Within her joyful chaos, she changed career and fell deeper in love with her family!  With the Ups and downs, good times and bad, they are really loving their life and have a real humor about their disease – they are the team that approach this illness daily together.    Kristen Gray is a thriving wife, mother, and teacher of 3rd Graders all while thriving with Multiple Sclerosis.  She has two degrees, a Bachelor of Arts – Political Science, and a Paralegal Degree. Kristen worked as a paralegal for 25 years in litigation as well as having lengthy commercial real estate experience. In 2018, while teaching overseas online English to Chinese students at 2 am, she had an epiphany that led her to switching her career from the legal field to teaching… with the belief that she could offer more to the youth of the day as an elementary teacher. Kristen is currently starting her 5th year as a teacher of 3rd grade students.   I am your host, Marci Nettles. I have had a lifetime of opportunities where I had the choice to Breakdown or Breakthrough. It is my hope this Podcast may become your light in the darkness, as you listen to the stories of people I consider “heroes.” Each one had a point where they too had to choose to either Breakdown or Breakthrough!    Thank you for listening!   Please connect with Kristen: Facebook- Kristen.Gray.731   Find Marci at marcinettles(.)com

    Fixing School Finance

    Fixing School Finance
Texans across the state and across the political divide agree: public school funding needs fixing. What that means exactly, however, is tricky. In Part 1, Texas State Representative Donna Howard explains the school finance conundrum and its evolution over the years, along with some potential solutions floating around the legislature. In Part 2, political consultant Kolby Monnig argues that citizens must influence education laws by communicating with their representatives, and she demystifies that process. Lastly, in Part 3, educators, school support personnel, and unions rally for K-12 education reforms across the board. Truth in Storytelling: The Reality of Teachers' Lives

Truth in Storytelling: The Reality of Teachers' Lives
Author Roxanna Elden discusses her new satirical novel Adequate Yearly Progress, which tells the story of the teachers’ lives across one year in the fictional Texas high school of Brae Hill Valley. Roxanna’s book draws on her own experience as a K-12 public school teacher and her conversations with other teachers around the country. Roxanna says that past portrayals of teachers in popular media can be very unrealistic, and her book is meant to challenge that. The Dash welcome Robert Kennedy 3rd

The Dash welcome Robert Kennedy 3rd
I’m an educator/trainer/coach at heart.  I started a career out of college in the field of human services and worked there for 6 years.  I learned a lot and even moved up to the position of Director in my last human services company but eventually learned that I was not ready for a long term career in that field.  So, I moved in the field of teaching (strange story: my parents saw a video that I had done in my senior of college and felt that I would make a great teacher but they didn’t tell me this until about 8 years later.  They felt that if they had told me, I would have just done the opposite anyway.  Was I THAT rebellious?).  I taught middle school English for about 5 months and then got a full time position as a high school science teacher.  I did that for 7 years.  I was nominated for the Who’s Who Among American Teachers by some students but I’m pretty sure that award was received by most of the teachers in the school since you have to PAY to be included.  Maybe I should have paid. While I was teaching, I started a web promotions company, Kay3Music.com, and a web design company, Kay 3 D-Zynes.  I was great at interviewing and getting into places.  I stunk at marketing so ultimately, the promotions company didn’t make much money.  I was great at learning new code and new designs but was just really learning about managing projects and people.  Oh, by the way, I stunk at marketing too, so while we had some great clients, the web design firm didn’t earn enough to continue growth. I was an online college faculty for two years but eventually got into instructional design and elearning development.  I started RKCS Learning Solutions in 2009.  I’m still not great at marketing but I’m learning that I don’t have to do it myself.  There are actually people that get paid for this.
