    Episode 109 - Dog Soldiers (2002)

Welcome to the Horror Project Podcast. Join hosts Laura and Phil as they review Dog Soldiers (2002).

This week we visit the Scottish Highlands as a team of British Soldiers face off against a pack of very tall Werewolves. We discuss the super masculine energy and banter presented in the film, and if it has aged well over the last 20 plus years?

We also fall into the classic debate. Would you rather be a Vampire or Werewolf?

Plus we shall be finding a place on the leaderboard for the movie during our Ranking.

We hope you enjoy the show, thanks for listening!

    Orkney Odyssey with Craig Round

    Orkney Odyssey with Craig Round

Our recent Orkney Odyssey trip was full of fantastic wildlife encounters along with breathtaking Orkney land and seascapes and wonderful historical sites. We had daily, multiple sightings of Hen Harriers across the islands with many juvenile birds seen but also some stunning ‘ghostly’ grey males, and also enjoyed great views of a stooping Peregrine on Rousay and two young White-tailed Eagles on Hoy, including one bird that flew low and right across in front of our group. We also had brilliant prolonged views of a juvenile Merlin on Westray, sat on a fence post and being mobbed by Meadow Pipits!

The islands were alive with passage waders with some particularly large flocks of Golden Plover, Lapwing and Curlew in the fields and many more passage waders around the coast including Sanderling, Dunlin, Knot, Ringed Plover and Turnstone but we also found several flocks of Ruff and a Spotted Redshank on Westray. A great view of an Otter and many sightings of Red Throated Divers, Arctic and Great Skuas were just some of the other highlights of another great autumn trip to these beautiful islands.

Join Craig in this episode where he talks with Roy about our recent trip to the Orkney Islands, Scotland.

Speyside Wildlife is a wildlife tour operator based in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland. Northwest Scotland

    Northwest Scotland

Northwest Scotland is wild, rugged and remote.

    And absolutely stunning!

It's one of my favorite places in all of Scotland.

This is where you to go see the incredible beauty of mountains, lochs, moors and glens.

It's in Northwest Scotland that you see deer, eagles, dolphins and whales.

And it's where you go to slow down and let yourself be.

Oh, and if you're into geology, you'll love it.

Yes, it takes more time and effort to get here.

    But it is worth it!

    It's spectacular.

That's a Wrap on our Summer Trip to Scotland

That's a Wrap on our Summer Trip to Scotland

This podcast features a conversation on the last day of our recent personal trip to Scotland we took May 30th - June 10th. Our group included Isabel and myself, our friends and past Candelaria Design Tour travelers, Anthony and Gicela Dulcich, and Isabel’s mother, Alette Thompson who was celebrating her 75th birthday.

As for why she chose Scotland for her birthday trip, during the pandemic Alette did a lot of research on their family and found that their ancestry was from Scotland. She traced back their ancestors as far as the 1300’s, including Scottish royalty and the castles they lived in! Thus, these castles became our itinerary and we based ourselves in  Edinburgh, Scotland in a lovely AirBnB and from there we explored castles, distilleries, St. Andrews, and the countryside of Scotland including the Scottish Highlands.

What a marvelous trip and this episode was recorded on our final day, so some wonderful reflective thoughts are shared from our journey. Enjoy~

Hotel Legends: Fife Arms with Artfarm CEO Ewan Venters

Hotel Legends: Fife Arms with Artfarm CEO Ewan Venters

Nestled in the  majestic Scottish Highlands, the Fife Arms was recently named best hotel in the U.K. by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards. With over 16,000 pieces of art and antiques, this 19th-century hunting lodge turned hotel in the historical village of Braemar serves as both an international art gallery as well as an eclectic, cozy, and welcoming countryside home. Though a newer hotel (it opened only in 2019), the Fife Arms quickly earned legend status and consistently wows travelers with its drama, eccentricity and charm.

Ewan Venters, the CEO of the hospitality and development company Artfarm, joins Melissa on today’s episode to dive into how he helped transform this landmark hotel into a ‘living contemporary art museum.’ For Ewan, “hospitality is all about the generosity of spirit” and he explains how the connection to art and community creates a unique guest experience at the hotel. He reveals the journey of opening the Fife Arms  and designing an authentic space for the culturally curious traveler; he talks about the famous whiskey library Bertie’s Bar (named after Queen Victoria's rebellious son) and shares the secret to the hotel’s success (including feedback from the famous actress and prior hotel guest Judi Dench).

Indagare Productions Director Kathryn Nathanson also jumps on to share travel tips for making the most of a trip to the Fife Arms after staying there this past April. She’ll dive into how to get there, what to wear, see, eat and do.

If you want more information about the Fife Arms and the Scottish Highlands sites that are mentioned in today’s episode, click the links below:

Fife Arms - 19th century hunting lodge turned into a historic, boutique hotel located in the village of Braemar

Artfarm - the company run by Ewan that oversees unique hospitality projects like Fife Arms by focusing on the power of hospitality, art, and community.

If you want to dive more into the history of the Highlands and the relationship between Queen Victoria and her gillie, John Brown, check out the movie: Mrs. Brown.

For travelers visiting the Scottish Highlands, see tips below from Indagare Productions Director Kathryn Nathanson:

    Arriving to Fife Arms

    • Visitors have the option to travel by car, plane, or train to Fife Arms, however Kathryn recommends taking a car. You can hire a driver or if comfortable, rent a car yourself; note, you will be driving on the opposite side of the road compared to America.

    What to pack

    • Depending on the time of year, the Highlands can get very cold in the winter and it’s best to always dress for the changing weather. This includes packing layers, barbers, and wellies (rain boots). Some guests choose to dress nicer for cocktails and dinners, however feel free to dress casual as the overall environment is relaxed. The hotel also offers guests the option to borrow outdoor gear if needed.

    How long to stay

    • About 3 to 4 days should give you enough time to explore the area around the Fife Arms.

Sites to visit in the Highlands

    Outdoor Activities

    • Visit the gillie team at the Fife Arms to arrange activities in the area, some of which include hiking, kayaking, fly fishing, shooting, biking, falconry, off-road jeep adventures, picnics in the mountains, forging classes, farm tours, and more. For a complete list of options, check out www.thefifearms.com/experience.

Restaurants in and around the Fife Arms

    The Loch Ness Monster

    The Loch Ness Monster

Since 1933, a monster  - affectionately known as “Nessie” - has lurked within Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Nessie has been described as a “monster fish”, “sea serpent”, or “dragon”, with a large, long neck and one or more humps protruding from the water. Has a creature survived this long or is it a long-standing hoax?

Scotland: Highlands, Lowlands, Islands -- And In-Between

Scotland: Highlands, Lowlands, Islands -- And In-Between

Bruce McAlpine and his sister Rhona Paterson grew up near Edinburgh. They share their love of Scotland with Lea, and they cover cities, countryside, islands and all things Scottish.

After describing Scotland geographically,  we start by talking of the Scottish character, and go on to the delights of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Scottish foods, Scotch whiskey, the Highlands (is there really a Loch Ness monster?). Also the 800 or so Scottish islands, focusing on The Isle of Skye.

We also discuss Scottish pleasures such as golf, bagpipes, and festivals.

To end the episode, Rhona and  Bruce share special memories of Scotland. And Lea shares two of her memories as well: one involving Queen Elizabeth and an unexpected meeting; and the other, dealing with the question of what a Scotsman wears under his kilt.  (Bruce gives a definitive answer!).
    _____
Bruce McAlpine and Rhona Paterson grew up on a sheep farm in the Scottish Borders, near Edinburgh. From there, Bruce studied in Edinburgh before living and working in England, Africa, America and back to England. in finance positions. He currently lives in Oxford with his wife Erica and two children, Grant and May.

Rhona studied in Aberdeen and after a few years in England moved back to the Edinburgh area.  She is an occupational therapist, and lives with her husband David and two children, William and Fia.

The Selkie of Beinn nam Mic Caillte (Halloween Horror) - Story #11

The Selkie of Beinn nam Mic Caillte (Halloween Horror) - Story #11

In a loch in the lee of a mountain in the Scottish Highlands there lives an ancient king. Banished by his people millennia ago, these days he survives on trickery, deceit... and the flesh of human men. This Halloween, a group of friends meet a stranger on the mountain trail. Together, they take shelter in a ramshackle bothy on the edges of the loch. But, are the legends really true? And will these four friends last the night? This bone-chilling tale is based on Scottish folklore, and is a Stories from the Hearth Halloween special.

Stories from the Hearth is an immersive storytelling experience featuring truly original fiction backed by thoughtfully produced soundscapes. The aim of this podcast is to rekindle its listeners' love for the ancient art of storytelling (and story-listening), and to bring some small escapism to the frantic energies of the modern world. Stories is the brainchild of queer punk poet, environmentalist, and anarchist Cal Bannerman. Vive l'art!
