The Mission of God - PDF
Big Idea - The people were getting discouraged after only a couple of months, as the progress was slow, and it seemed that the Temple they were building could never compare with the Temple of Solomon. The work was hard and slow, and they did not have the resources, mountains of gold and silver to adorn the temple to its former glory. It was discouraging, and it is hard to stay motivated and keep at the task when you feel like you can't succeed. There was a real danger that the work would once again grind to a halt. Like Israel, we have a mission from God to work. To build His house and labor for His kingdom. And like Israel, the work is hard. At times progress is painfully slow, and we almost always feel we do not have the resources we need to finish the work. How did Haggai encourage the people to not quit, to persevere, and keep at the task? Haggai challenged the people to get their priorities in order - put God first, not yourselves. Then he reminded them of their need to keep things in balance - a balance of fellowship with God, living together in a real community, and also so the work. Now, what they need is perseverance in the work. He commands them to "work," that is, to keep at the task and not give up! He encourages them to persevere 1) by being strong in the power of God, 2) by not worrying about what they lack, for God will provide everything they need, 3) by remembering that it is God's mission, not theirs, and 4) the work will result in a life of shalom, the peace and abundance of God.
