    Jesus and the Church

    Jesus and the Church
Have you ever been to a movie you think should end, but it seems to have an extra 20 minutes of extra, and seemingly unneeded, material? Many scholars think that is what John 21 is like. The ending of chapter 20 wrapped up both the book and the resurrection appearances nicely. Yet, after that summary and purpose statement, we have yet another resurrection appearance! Why would John include this story? Today, we hope to find the answer to that question, and see something of the necessary relationship between Jesus and the Church.

    Model for Community of Believers:
“All who believed were together...Attending temple together and breaking bread in their homes.” (Acts 2:44, 46)

    The Solution:
“Life change happens best in small groups.”
    Change =>growth = good
No growth = stagnation => death

    The Problem:
“I don’t need another thing to do in my busy life.”
“Even if I had time, the groups are just too far.”
“Plus I’m not comfortable with other people (introverted).”

    Myths:
    More time = more belonging
    More proximity = more belonging
    More personality = more belonging

    Essentials (From John 21:1-14):

    1. Living life together. (v.2-3)

    “[The disciples] were together.”

    2. Growing in Jesus Christ together. (v.12-13)

    “Iron sharpens iron.” (Proverbs 27:17)
“I am the bread of life.” (John 6:35)

    3. Serving Jesus together. (v.6, 10-11)

“I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
