We read reviews online to decide the best place to eat, the best hotel, or what to buy. We take this advice from people we don't know without knowing if their values or tastes watch ours.
We have known that Hell is bad all our lives, but do we really understand how bad it is?
Society and media portray a little red man with horns, a tail, and a pitchfork. With this cartoonish depiction, we may be teaching our children the wrong thing. We have dumbed Hell down to the point where we don't fully realize what it is. Some may know that we do not want to go to hell, but we have candy-coated it so much that it does not have the gravity it deserves. Sometimes, when going through a trial or a bad time in life, we say we are going through hell. But even the worst days on earth are no comparison to the torment of hell. Imagine the worst situation in life, but it never ends. It is not enough to fear going To Hell; we must long for heaven.
In our text, the young ruler lived his life as if there was no afterlife. He had great wealth but had no compassion for the people who begged at the gate. When he died, he begged for another chance. When that failed, he begged to warn his family so they would not suffer the same fate. It is too easy to rely on God's mercy being new daily. We know we can ask for forgiveness, and it will be granted, but there will come a time when the consequences will be final, and there will be no more forgiveness and grace.
Our world is critical of our rules and values. They will say it is restrictive and abusive. The truth is our rules and values are out of love and concern to keep our families safe.
We should be thankful for warnings and restrictions. We place warning signs on dangerous places or equipment to keep people safe. Upon seeing a DANGER sign on a piece of electrical equipment, none of us would say "Warn me all you want. I’ll touch it if I want to." But why do we ignore spiritual warnings? The warning signs and barriers on railroad tracks are not there to inconvenience us but to keep us safe from harm.
We all take advice from strangers about where to eat, but we ignore warnings from people who love us and try to warn us about how bad hell is. Warnings and rules are not scare tactics.
The rich man reviewed hell and said to tell them that it is terrible. Brother Long comes tonight with a similar warning. We must work NOT to go to Hell; that can only happen by working to go to Heaven.
