Pastor Marc Sharp continues the series from the seven letters written to seven churches found in the beginning of the book of Revelation (last book in the New Covenant). The author of each letter is Jesus. The second of the seven letters to the churches is addressed to Smyrna, a harbor city in what is now modern-day Turkey. Smyrna was beautiful with paved streets, a library, gymnasium and shrine to the Greek writer Homer, who may have been born there. It was known for its temple to the goddess Cybele, as well as Imperial Cult temples to Caesars Tiberius and Hadrian. The Smyrnan's knew that the hour of their death was imminent. Yet they were told “Do not fear what you are about to suffer”. This letter puts death (both for them and for us) in proper perspective.
