The Energetic Problem with the Energy Transition with Adam Rozencwajg

The Energetic Problem with the Energy Transition with Adam Rozencwajg

Decarbonization is crucial to tackling climate change. Yet, human history has been a story of increasing energy consumption and hydrocarbons unleashed global development. Today, hope and investment is pinned on a suite of alternatives, especially wind and solar. The economics work. However, do the energetics? Our guest has spent a decade looking at the energy return on investment (EROI) and his work and insight presents a stark contrast and challenge to our current direction. Adam Rozencwajg is Managing Partner at Goehring & Rozencwajg, a commodities and natural resources fund with over 30 years of track record and holds a global following for their research (available here http://gorozen.com/)

John Harpole: President of Mercator Energy

John Harpole: President of Mercator Energy

John Harpole is the president of Denver-based natural gas broker Mercator Energy. In his third appearance on the podcast (previous episodes were on March 10, 2022, and May 25, 2021), Harpole talks about the impact that the shuttering of Europe’s fertilizer plants will have on food prices and food security, soaring natural gas prices (on August 29, gas at the Dutch TTF hub was selling for $100 per mmBtu), deindustrialization, and how the shale revolution helped save the U.S. from the catastrophe now facing Europe.

Anas Alhajji: Editorial Advisor at Attaqa

Anas Alhajji: Editorial Advisor at Attaqa

Anas Alhajji is the editorial advisor of Attaqa, the only Arabic-language media outlet focused on energy. In his second appearance on the podcast, Alhajji explains why, despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian oil and gas will still be sold on the global market, the importance of US LNG exports, how Iranian gas could eventually replace Russian gas in Europe, and why markets always “overrun politics.”

Benny Peiser: Director of Net Zero Watch

Benny Peiser: Director of Net Zero Watch

Benny Peiser is the director of Net Zero Watch, a London-based group that focuses on the “implications of expensive and poorly considered climate change policies.” Peiser talks about Europe’s “unilateral energy disarmament,” the “cult” of climate-change activism, how Germany led the anti-hydrocarbon campaign in Europe, Britain’s shale gas potential, and why Europe needs to reverse its opposition to hydraulic fracturing and begin drilling for oil and gas immediately.

Brent Bennett: Policy Director for Life:Powered

Brent Bennett: Policy Director for Life:Powered

For the one-year anniversary of the Texas Blackouts, our second guest this week is Brent Bennett, the policy director for Life:Powered, an initiative of the Texas Public Policy Foundation. In this episode, Bennett explains why the ERCOT market is “broken,” how it is being distorted by federal subsidies for wind and solar, why there’s no Moore’s law for batteries, and why there is an “oversupply of capital” being directed toward alternative energy sources.

Scott Angelle: Former Director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement at Department of Interior

Scott Angelle: Former Director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement at Department of Interior

From 2017 to 2021, Scott Angelle was the director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which regulates the operations of the energy industry on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf. In this episode, Angelle talks about the enormous volumes of hydrocarbons that are produced in the Gulf of Mexico, how Louisiana is different from the rest of the United States, and why we should be producing more oil and gas here instead of asking OPEC and Russia to “give us the energy we need to fuel our country.”

New Report Criticizes Validity Of EIA Projections

New Report Criticizes Validity Of EIA Projections
Post Carbon Institute recently released a report authored by earth scientist J. David Hughes raising critical doubts about the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) projections for domestic oil and shale gas production. The report, “Shale Reality Check: Drilling Into the U.S. Government’s Rosy Projections for Shale Gas & Tight Oil Production Through 2050,” takes aim at the veracity of forecasts found in the Annual Energy Outlook 2017 (AEO2017), in advance of the planned release of the EIA’s AEO2018. Tune in as we speak with the author of this report, J. David Hughes.

    Shale Gas Revolution

    Shale Gas Revolution
The new abundance of natural gas provides energy options for America, including clean electric power. Oil production has increased, reducing the dependence of the US on imported petroleum. Both benefits come with the challenge of managing the environmental impact of new oil and gas development in the US. This talk discusses the way shale gas and oil are created and produced, and the latest choices now available for generating energy in the United States. Series: "Lawrence Livermore National Lab Science on Saturday" [Public Affairs] [Science] [Show ID: 29609]
