The Horrors of Lake Shawnee Amusement Park

The Horrors of Lake Shawnee Amusement Park
The Lake Shawnee Amusement Park was a popular attraction in West Virginia from 1926 until it closed in 1967. Its history of fun and laughter, though, was marred by at least two tragic deaths. The park briefly reopened in 1987, but it struggled to escape its calamitous history. Today, the park remains abandoned, and some say the grounds are haunted by the spirits who perished there, and by the horrifying events which took place on the property more than two centuries ago. 196 - The Wendigo and Other American Indian Folklore Monsters

196 - The Wendigo and Other American Indian Folklore Monsters

The Wendigo. Tales of a perpetually starving monster roaming the woods of Eastern North America. The Wendigo originates in the lore of tribes like the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Algonquin. Its name roughly translates to "the evil spirit that devours mankind". And the Wendigo isn't the only monster we're looking into today. From the well known Skinwalkers to Thunderbirds, to the lesser known Flying Heads and Stone giants, we’re diving into a handful of legends. We’re also gonna dig a bit into the diversity of American Indian peoples, give a little lay of the land to help understand where all of these stories come from. Stories that seem to revolve mostly around cannibalism. Seriously. It's a weird, fun episode. Hope you enjoy hearing it as much as I enjoyed recording it. Hail Nimrod!

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 454

This week we begin our coverage of ScareFest as well as talking with actress Shawnee Smith about a wide array of things like... the Saw franchise, The Blob, Summer School, dancing orphans, Meathead, the Olympics and hanging out with John Candy. Plus we discuss Creepshow 3, not spoiling movies back in the day as well as a rundown of the many different people we've met at conventions over the years.

And as we cover the most jarring moment of your life, we also cover… Felissa Rose, some kind of zombie-robot, cats will suck your breath out, he’s hilarious as a trainwreck, more boils and ooze-iness, there’s a hot dog involved, it ate two of my tapes, Daniel Roebuck, Holliston, don’t be stupid I’m a radio, The Raft, they decide to find all the working bits in the perfect woman, that’s the end of the season arch that didn’t quite get filmed, you have to know the face that accompanied it, at one point he stabs the homeless ghost, Deadbeat, the muscle-calf lady, a tulle dress, students from the local arts college, converting footage into digital the old fashioned way, it looks like a rubber mask, I’m just still dancing, Gil and Kelly from Kids Club, written by 5th graders, A. J. Bowen, I’m having a flashback, Dave Brockie, wet or dry… it depends on what you are looking for, Giorgio Tsoukalos, being pregnant, and the next thing you know she’s a rabbit, Adam Green, Costas Mandylor, skills at taping stuff back together and the magic of Hollywood… and selfies.

Spoiler Alert: We keep from spoiling Sleepaway Camp as well as all of Shawnee’s films… but we have no problem spoiling all of Creepshow 3. So beware as you listen to that segment.

“One night he called at like 11 o’clock, ‘say Shawnee… come downstairs, get in the white limo’. And I came downstairs, and I get in the white limo, and it’s him and Bon Jovi… the whole band. And we went out like, you know, bar-hopping in Canada. The night ended with him on-stage singing the blues. I was pretty epic.”

    First Listen Fridays: Shawnee

    First Listen Fridays: Shawnee

Welcome to the premiere episode of First Listen Fridays! Over the next 12 Fridays, we'll be dropping exclusive first listens and chatting about all things music with a dozen of today's hottest Indigenous artists.

This week, we're stoked to share with you Shawnee's brand new single, Warrior Heart.

Written as a response to the suicide crisis in Northern Canadian communities, the track was recorded with PowWowStep producer DJ Shub at the Villa Sound studio in Ontario. According to Shawnee, the song "acknowledges and speaks to the youth in native communities dealing with, and battling, depression and suicide," and draws on her own struggles and experiences.

Certain to become an anthem for generations to come, Warrior Heart abounds with emotion, empathy, empowerment, and - most of all - hope.

SAM 117 | Interview with Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Pyle – Part 2

SAM 117 | Interview with Shawnee Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Pyle – Part 2

On May 22, 2010, John Glaser, a 33-year-old career fire fighter died while conducting a primary search of a residential house fire. Firefighter Glaser vomited in his SCBA face piece and then removed it, causing him to inhale products of combustion.

The fire was reported by automatic alarm at 8:55 p.m. Saturday at 13408 W. 75th Court, according to fire officials. When firefighters arrived, they found the home burning out of control. Neighbors told firefighters they thought two people and a dog were inside.

Firefighters began attacking the fire and searching the home.

As they were searching the home at 9:12 p.m., a mayday call went out because a firefighter was missing.
