    109. ‘Baseball as a Spiritual Experience’ w/ Dan Sheehan & Tyler Snodgrass
Cody is re-joined by writers/comedians Dan Sheehan and Tyler Snodgrass to avoid talking about baseball while being forced to talk about baseball. You can find your copy of the book at the house of your local old man after you accidentally hit a ball into his yard which also contains a very large dog.

'Fathers, Sons, & Holy Ghosts: Baseball as a Spiritual Experience'
    by Austin Gisriel

No other sport, and indeed few other activities evoke as much passion as does baseball. It is a passion that unites generations and genders, laborers and lawyers, Republicans and Democrats. Baseball serves as a common language, a unified way of perceiving the world, a means to greater understanding. Baseball’s shrines, rituals, myths, and heroes certainly give it a religious aura, but many activities may be pursued “religiously.” Baseball is beyond religion. It is a living myth that puts us in touch with Eternity, with the Infinite. Its Miracle is not some long-ago act that contradicts the laws of physics. Its Miracle is the scrubbing away of cynicism to reveal the fresh-faced child within who is ready to believe, eager to believe, who does believe. Fathers, Sons, & Holy Ghosts: Baseball as a Spiritual Experience is an examination in memoir form of how baseball nourishes the spiritual side of those who are part of the game.

    The Moonwalkers

    The Moonwalkers

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 345

This week we recap some recent viewings, before we discuss the Kubrick-inspired, scheming action comedy - Moonwalkers starring Ron Perlman and Rupert Grint. And while we decide just where we fall on the spectrum of the conspiracy, we also mention... Eye in the Sky, Zootopia, Creed, falling asleep to Forensic Files, Knight of Cups, Scandal, a natural physicality, Jessica Chastain, Robert Plant mixed with Kylo Ren, flying jellyfish, evil memory foam, Cronos, Better Call Saul, drug use applied to PTSD, mismatched libidos, you can't get momentum 'cause there's no springs, Interstellar, I never tire of watching Ron Perlman beat the hell out of people, not becoming romantically involved, Aaron Paul get teary-eyed, the special girls who love Beauty and the Beast, Fargo, a lot of coke, City of Lost Children, blowing people's heads off... but my nachos were great.

Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for the 2015 film Moonwalkers, so you better watch it before you listen. Oh yeah, and there's a random Moon spoiler at the end of the episode as well... you have been warned!

"Ron Perlman and Ron Weasley in a movie together... I kind of need to see that."

Origins and Limits of the Supreme Court's Power

Origins and Limits of the Supreme Court's Power

It's been a while since we've gotten into the background of the Supreme Court, so this week, Brett and Nazim discuss the self-imposed scope of the Supreme Court's Power by way of a weird behind-the-scenes nuance of the San Francisco v. Sheehan case on police force.  Much like any powerful individuals with unfettered power, the Supreme Court has had a strange amount of discretion in the limits of what it can do under the Constitution and has defined its role in the government carefully.  By discussing judicial review, Marbury v. Madison, and standing, Brett and Nazim illustrate how they're basically a government institution with the same morals as Spiderman.

Gren Wells and the Road Within

Gren Wells and the Road Within

    Movie Meltdown - Episode 306

This week, we welcome special guest actress/writer/director Gren Wells to join us and discuss her years working in the industry as well as the making of The Road Within - an independent film about three teens with mental development problems that go on a road trip. With an impressive cast that features Robert Sheehan, Dev Patel, Zoë Kravitz, Robert Patrick and Kyra Sedgwick.

And while we realize that we're all weirdos, we also discuss... R-rated language, a bit more accepting of being different, premiering at the L.A. Film Festival, combating the misinformation, wide shots, parenting is the key, I like going and eating popcorn as much as the next person, Runoff, adapting a screenplay, opening a door correctly, Jackson Kramer, three takes per set-up, injecting humor, color helping to tell the story, Alexa vs. Red, winning best film at the Rome Film festival, self distribution, beating Harvey Weinstein to the punch, sell th script to a studio... and you'll make some money, you shouldn't have it in your back pocket, streaming indie films, Tourette's, OCD, anorexia, Terms of Endearment, Sundance, called in every favor, no free shit parties, The Breakfast Club, working on the characters, Mike Nichols, Yosemite, the archaic MPAA, is it ever just so hard to be the smartest person in the room, Sweden, Ireland, Cleveland, Vermont, New York, West Palm Beach, Sarasota, word of mouth is so powerful, changing stuff just to change stuff, fighting the Lifetime movie stigma, Wizard of Oz, wanting to have sex with Robert Sheehan, the financiers would tell me to go fuck myself, The Stanford Prison Experiment, the best medicine tastes like candy, I saw a trailer online for a German film, it will be triggering, for no pay, watching it in a vacuum, 35mm vs. digital, No one said going to the movies should be easy... it should challenge you, bringing a bit more reality, Coprolalia, James L. Brooks, I love my movie and I know that it can change people's lives, anything is possible, seeing something all the way though, already hyper in a resting state, unproduced rom-coms bought my house, laugh and cry... sometimes at the same moment, doing it for a living, you're giving the audience a chance to breathe, by way of New York and Robert Fucking Patrick and the blue cheese.

"I have joked that we're going to win the award for most use of the word cunt. Ever. On film.

Open Mic with Mike Creed, Ep 15 - Clark Sheehan

Open Mic with Mike Creed, Ep 15 - Clark Sheehan
THIS EPISODE Mike catches up with Clark Sheehan, one time 7Up Colorado Cyclist racer now known as the "Fencing Tycoon," who turns the tables on Mike and makes the podcast as much about Creed as himself. Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Sheehan was lured to cycling much the same way as other Colorado natives during the late '70's and early '80's - by the Coors Classic. He began racing at the age of 14, and soon showed his gift by winning a junior national time trial title. An 'apprenticeship' under the then-national coach Eddie Borysewicz at the Olympic Training Center soon followed, along with time spent racing in Belgium. In between laughing and reminiscing, the two talk dream women, teammates past, shifting priorities, being a polylinguist, everybody's Randy Wicker legend, their times on U.S. Postal and Rock Racing, and how you come to rationalize things as a bike racer. Their conversation ranges from track racing to cyclocross on mountain bikes and everything in between, including that time that Clark ruined Creed's prom. You're guaranteed to enjoy this funny and freewheeling trip down memory lane with two old friends.

    Episode #0091 CFRI Teen & Adult Retreat: August 3rd – 9th 2010

Maggie Sheehan, 22 years old with cystic fibrosis, talks about her great experiences attending the CFRI Retreat in Northern California. The retreat takes place off the beaten path under the “redwoods," just minutes from Stanford Hospital.  CFRI is a great organization that empowers the CF Community to attain the highest possible quality of life.

    • The CFRI Retreat has been in existence since the 1990s. Maggie has been attending for the retreat for five years, and scholarships are available.
    • “Activities at retreat include rap sessions, arts & crafts, sporting events, fun in the sun, and great food!” Maggie says.
    • To attend the retreat, you must be over 15 years old with guardian, and over 18 years old by yourself. Friends and significant others are welcome to attend and join in the fun.
    • The retreat is a very safe environment that follows strict guidelines regarding cross infection. Maggie feels that the retreat is “safer than the real world."
    • “My favorite part of the retreat is the sharing and the talent show at the end of the week,” Maggie says.
    • Maggie continues to return to the retreat because of the great friends she makes and the awesome connection to the CF community.  She feels refreshed at the end of the retreat.
    • For more info on the retreat call 650-404-9975, email cfri@CFRI.org, or visit www.CFRI.org

    Save Public Access TV

    Save Public Access TV

Access Tucson, the public access TV station in Tucson, Arizona is in trouble. The government wants to cut its budget to the point that it would have to close its doors. I’ve had a TV show, Lovolution Village for several years at Access Tucson.  It is the only place in Tucson where I can talk about my vision on how to create world peace by building a network of solar-powered arcologies, ecological cities. Since I have been activated to promote these ideas, I have experienced oppression and suppression not only from the mainstream society, but within the alternative community who doesn’t understand the vision of, arcology, as a whole-systems approach to redesigning the way we live, work, eat and move.  Access Tucson allows me to work as an educator about the need for arcology to be seen as a way for a new green economy to emerge. Access Tucson’s programming allows many other voices and shows to be aired that have messages vital to the future of humanity.

We must not allow Access Tucson to close its doors. Government of the people will not let corporate government to take our voices away. Please stand beside me in insisting Access Tucson reopens its doors.  We are involved with a people’s struggle to build a new world founded on global justice.  Access Tucson represents this global struggle on the local level.

This podcast explains how Access Tucson needs to follow its original mission of participatory democracy and use TV to free us from tyranny!

Does anyone out there support these ideas? If so, let me know by being the first to donate to the cause! I will be eternally grateful to you and so will all the invisible forces that want this evolutionary movement to happen.

    Taking Back Texas Episode 5

    Taking Back Texas Episode 5
On The Difficulty Of Writing, Or, The War Hits Home by: fake consultant I do not want to write this story, and I have been stuck for about ten days because I do not want to face the reality of this particular situation. But here it is. Last Friday was the day The Girlfriend and I had to travel to Fort Lewis, Washington, to attend the military departure ceremony for one of our two godsons. He enlisted in the Army National Guard, and now it’s time to go to the Middle East. There was no mystery or great surprise that he would be going, and the news is not all bad. He is not in a Stryker Brigade; thank whichever deity you support, nor a military policeman. It is theoretically possible that the support role he will be filling will actually be moderately safe, which is about the best spin I can offer considering the circumstances. He and his brother are our two godsons, and we have literally been looking out for them since the days of their birth. To illustrate the point more clearly, I was his birth photographer. The Girlfriend and I attended Lamaze-twice-to allow us access to both deliveries, but circumstances caused us to miss his older brother’s birth by eight hours. We have been the “bad” godparents ever since-the ones who introduced them to Beavis and Butt-Head, and Ren and Stimpy, and Skittles and Jolt Cola and Archie McPhee. It isn’t as though I didn’t try to nip this in the bud. I suggested the Air Force (a subject I can speak about from personal experience), but I was clearly not as persuasive as I could have been. Which is how we found ourselves at Fort Lewis. The families assembled in a hangar on base, a small band offered up patriotic music, important officers offered up inspiring words, and an award was presented to the officer who managed the required paperwork that made the deployment possible. Finally, with a clanging of warning bells, the hangar doors were opened to reveal the soldiers we were there to honor, standing in formation. Nobody reacts to the officer who says: “This is the last time I will have the chance to address all of you...” Everyone wants to look brave, soldier and family alike; but there is no way to sit in a room with small child noises filling the space, and not know the future will likely be so, so tough for some of those little children. Goodbye Cindy Sheehan by: lightseeker In what she described as a ''resignation letter,'' Sheehan wrote in her online diary on the ''Daily Kos'' blog: ''Good-bye America ... you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can't make you be that country unless you want it. ''It's up to you now.'' [snip] ''I have endured a lot of smear and hatred since Casey was killed and especially since I became the so-called ''Face'' of the American anti-war movement,'' Sheehan wrote in the diary. How Courage is involved by: Stewart True Courage In all the *fuhrer* over the House Speaker's machinations this weekend, it may seem a trifle pollyanish to bring up my own organization's recent action to bestow awards on legislators. But there really is a relationship here. In case you missed it, the True Courage Action Network recently ran a poll and asked everyone who follows the Lege which senator, rep, and advocate demonstrated the greatest courage defending Texas from the kleptocrats who are fighting right now to hold on to power. The poll winners are: Best State Senator: Rodney Ellis Best State Representative: Mike Villarreal Best State Advocate: ACLU of Texas (represented by Will Harrell, Sonia Santana, and Kat Dean) In addition, TCAN's own members chose to honor: Sen. Mario Gallegos for: Defending Voting Rights in the Senate Rep. Rafael Anchía for: Defending Voting Rights in the House Sen. Royce West for: Promoting Ethics Reform Rep. Jim Dunnam for: Delivering a Passionate Floor Speech and Craig McDonald of Texans for Public Justice for: Delivering a Daring Testimony. All these individuals and organizations have the guts (well, we prefer the term "Courage") to stand on principle regarding ethics issues -- often against their own political best interests. Contrast that with the current jockeying for power in the House by people who get away with saying anything to get elected because our electorate is so ill-informed. When accepting our awards, these winners insisted that they weren't heroes, that other people contributed more, that they were just doing what they thought they had to do. They were also eager to point out that having a network of friends in the activist community had been essential for them to pass legislation that's good for Texas and Texans. Iscariot Caucus Still Full of S**t by: boadicea Capitol Annex has the rundown: Democrats for Reform, is, of course, the group of Craddick-allied Democrats who put out a "reform" agenda earlier this year. The reality of their agenda, however, is that it didn't amount to much and that this group actually circumvented some other good reforms. Restore full funding of CHIP- HB 109 does not fully restore CHIP to pre-2003 levels Reform Medicaid eligibility- vague, unclear - cannot point to anything definitive Restore the TEXAS Grants scholarship fund- 7,000 fewer students will receive TEXAS Grants than in 2003 Repeal tuition deregulation- HB 2382 by Coleman (definitely NOT an Iscariot) was the sole piece of legislation this session repealing tuition deregulation
