S6E288 - The Gaslight Anthem 'The '59 Sound' - with Todd Bauch

S6E288 - The Gaslight Anthem 'The '59 Sound' - with Todd Bauch

There's no mistaking the fact that The Gaslight Anthem and their leader Brian Fallon are from New Jersey. The earnest storytelling and vivid imagery in their breakout album The '59 Sound is pure Born/Darkness-era Springsteen. This week's guest Todd Bauch was skeptical at first, but eventually got sucked-in by the punk rock edge, stellar songwriting and dizzying musical references contained within this banger of a record.

Songs featured in this episode: Great Expectations (Acoustic version from Alternative Press) - The Gaslight Anthem; Feel It All Around (Portlandia Theme) - Washed Out; Atlantic City - Bruce Springsteen; Cold Feelings - Social Distortion; Bastards Of Young - Replacements; Two Hearts - Bruce Springsteen; Tonight - The Reactions; Great Expectations - The Gaslight Anthem; Don't Think Twice, It's Alright - Bob Dylan; The '59 Sound, The '59 Sound (Live Hyde Park, UK w/Bruce Springsteen), Old White Lincoln, High Lonesome - The Gaslight Anthem; Round Here - Counting Crows; Film Noir - The Gaslight Anthem; This River Is Wild - The Killers; Butterfly - Broken Bones Matilda; I Still Believe - Frank Turner; Miles Davis & The Cool - The Gaslight Anthem; Rosalita - Bruce Springsteen; I Can't Turn You Loose - Otis Redding; Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes - Paul Simon; Patient Ferris Wheel, Casanova, Baby! - The Gaslight Anthem; Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett; Quarter To Three - Gary US Bonds; Born In The USA - Bruce Springsteen; Even Cowgirls Get The Blues - The Gaslight Anthem; Santa Monica - Everclear; Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy; Meet Me By The River's Edge, Here's Looking At You, Kid, The Backseat - The Gaslight Anthem; Here's Looking At You, Kid - Broken Bones Matilda

129 – David McWane (Big D and the Kids Table)

129 – David McWane (Big D and the Kids Table)

Over the course of the band's 25-year run, Big D and the Kids Table has released nine studio albums, traveled the globe and earned a place as one of the planet's premier ska-punk projects. As Big D's lead singer, one of its founders and its last remaining original member, David McWane has seen it all. In advance of the band's forthcoming record, Do Your Art (available for pre-order on Side One Dummy, out Oct. 22), McWane talked about the new album and all that came before it.

During the extensive conversation, McWane discussed some of Big D and the Kids Table's most significant moments, including numerous international tours and countless shows with some especially notable bands, and some of his early projects. Along the way, McWane talked about his years as drummer in bands like Twisted Reality and Spu, the start of Big D, his unlikely path to becoming a vocalist, and the importance of continuing to make art in a culture that seems to no longer value creation.

Kill Your Idols was an American hardcore punk band from New York, active from 1995 through 2007 and were signed to SideOneDummy Records. The band released many 7" EPs, splits with other bands (including Full Speed Ahead, Fisticuffs, Voorhees, Good Riddance, and Poison Idea), compilation tracks, and full-length LPs in their 11-year run. Most of their records were released on vinyl as well as compact disc. They cite Poison Idea, Negative Approach, Sheer Terror, Agnostic Front, Minor Threat, Warzone, Sick of It All, and 7 Seconds as some of their influences. KYI was very fast and had a loud, dirty, dual guitar sound with shouted vocals. They employed hints of melody in their song structure. Although they derived many of their influences from California and D.C. style hardcore, they were considered a New York hardcore band.

I got Andy West on the Skype and this is what we chat about:

    • Starting off as a Dead Head
    • Was he a songwriter prior to starting the band
    • Who started getting their tattoos
    • What does he think about playing Long Island
    • Playing every small town that they could
    • Dealing with depression
    • Always writing a ton of songs
    • What are his thoughts on their new songs
    • Their last show when they broke up
    • The Webster Hall show
    • And a ton more
