    Christ our King?

    Christ our King?

Where does Christ the King Sunday come from, and in light of that discuss

    ·       What images or words of Christ’s kingship come to mind?

    ·       What is unhelpful about Christ the King?

    ·       Where do we look in the bible for our images of Christ the King?

    ·       What does Christ the King offer us?

Christ the King is complicated and contested. It means different things to different people and can be used to justify some appalling things.

One of those is the shameful story of the creation of Te Pihopa o Aotearoa. And yet the reign of God prevailed, and we have had our radical constitution for 30 years which involves self determination and co-governance. In the reign of Christ what do we have to offer the discussions around these issues in Aotearoa-New Zealand today

You can read some rough notes about this here

What are we Paying Attention To

What are we Paying Attention To

John begins by reminding ourselves that the questions we ask, what we look for and how we look, determines what we see, even when we read scripture. What questions are being brought to the gospel, and what might Jesus in Luke be inviting us to see?
In light of that what does apocalyptic language like Luke 21 invite us to pay attention to. In a world with so much seemingly going wrong what does Isaiah 65 offer.
Where are the signs of life?

    Resurrection [Signs of Life 10]

    Resurrection [Signs of Life 10]

There are fewer things harder in the Christian life than waiting for Jesus. The glory of God is not so much about the glory due to God, but something God will reveal about himself. Something we sometimes have to see to believe. Something that sometimes makes us wait. Jesus waits for reasons inexplicable sometimes to us, and Jesus weeps when he sees us weeping, and Jesus rages when he confronts death and suffering in his good world. The glory of God is this: in Jesus, there is no grave over which Jesus cannot triumph, including his own, and including yours and mine. And when we believe he is the resurrection and the life, the Son of God, he, too will one day call us by name, will speak over every tomb, grave, urn, or ashes we’ve become, and say, “Come out” and no one and nothing can stop him. Jesus wins. Do you believe this?

    Eternal [Signs of Life 07]

    Eternal [Signs of Life 07]

Our family shapes who we are in ways we are hardly even conscious of most of the time. We come from extended families with their own stories, histories and patterns. But are we in Jesus’ family? In this family obedience is not because we earn something from Jesus. It’s because, as Jesus says, his words, his instructions, his design, IS eternal life. Obedience to Jesus doesn’t just give us access to life. It is life. And you know this because Jesus obeys. Jesus constantly obeys. In fact, if you really look at Jesus’ words about himself, he is constantly reminding us that his real power comes from obedience to and dependence on His Father. Obedience is the life we want to live. Being a part of Jesus’ family means that our obedience and love for his words grow over time. Is your love of Jesus’ words increasing? Do we read his word and want to obey?

    Shepherd [Signs of Life 09]

    Shepherd [Signs of Life 09]

When you first hear Jesus speaking in our passage today, you may be slightly offended. Jesus claims to be our shepherd. Jesus says he is our good shepherd because he knows us by name. He doesn’t just lead us, he knows us. He will not leave us or forsake us. He gave his life for us.

The hands that stretched out, on the cross of calvary, pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities, are in fact the same hands we’ve been looking for our whole lives, and when they find us, will never let us go. He is the good shepherd who calls the atheist by name, the Muslim, the Hindu, the Buddhist, and you and me, by name. He invites all of us into his fold, if only we would enter by him. And he knows your name. He lays down his life for you. He holds you. And even death itself cannot take you from his hands. Do you know His voice?

    Sight [Signs of Life 08]

    Sight [Signs of Life 08]

The first-century Gospel writer John brilliantly weaves truth through a multi-layered story of Jesus healing a blind man. In the nearby literary shadows of this remarkable story lurks a provocative question, “Who’s Really Blind? Helen Keller once said, “The only thing worse than being born blind, is having sight, but no vision.” Embracing the Gospel is the only way to gain true sight. Just like the light of the world gives light to the man born blind in our story, so too can Jesus the true light of the world heal you of spiritual blindness and bring light to your life. Do you see him?

    Words [Signs of Life 03]

    Words [Signs of Life 03]

    Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/48909625

Following Jesus is hard. Staying with Jesus, obeying him, loving him through thick and thin, listening to him, is really hard. Jesus says things and teaches things that are offensive to every culture, every era and basically every person. So we should not be surprised when Jesus makes us uncomfortable. In fact, if Jesus isn’t offending us, isn’t challenging us, we probably just are not listening very well. Jesus will offend you. That is honestly part of his strategy to help grow your understanding of the kind of kingdom he is bringing. The wonderful paradox of the Christian faith is that as we deny self we become our real selves. It’s important, to be sure, whether or not you can follow Jesus. Don’t just ask “can I afford to follow Jesus?” Ask also, “If not Jesus, then who?”

Are We on the Brink of Finding Life on Mars?

Are We on the Brink of Finding Life on Mars?

The history of exploration on Mars reads like a good book with twists and turns and unexpected findings. None of these findings, though, have turned up evidence of life. After decades of searching, scientists are hopeful a NASA rover called Perseverance, which touched down on Mars in February, will reveal ancient, long-dead, fossilized life. Sarah Stewart Johnson, planetary scientist and author of The Sirens of Mars, says Perseverance is scouring the surface of a crater and producing rock samples. She says finding signs of life on the Red Planet would be an inspiration to humankind and make us think differently about our place in the cosmos. She speaks with Marina Koren, staff writer for The Atlantic.

How many of you have used the word GPS spiritually? What does it mean to you? How can we navigate our GPS so that we will not get stuck with our internal obstacles? How can our internal GPS pave our road and get to our yellow brick road of our life's journey? Is our spiritual GPS our inner voice, our gut, the voice of our heart, or our soul? Do our angels speak to us or are the signs or synchronicity there for us to follow? Noelle believes that our GPS is our guiding tool to connect to our higher self. She believes that it is our highest power tool, the bond that we have with the Creator or the Divine. How does divine intervention play into this? Is it part of our GPS? What should we do when we are in the crossroads of life? Noelle tells Carol that the universe speaks to us every day. It is a matter of tapping into our intuition without any ego or negative thoughts or feelings. The key is to quiet the mind and heart to receive our highest direction for our lives. Do you believe that we are always co creating with the Creator. Is the bond a dance with the same rhythm and beat. What is the difference between a sacred contract and soul contract? Can we become aware to it? How does the soul direct us? Do you ever speak to your soul? Noelle Agape believes that we are here to expand. How does freedom or courage play into this? Noelle believes that the universe is abundant and that we are the highest vibration. Carol believes that our spiritual partner is the Creator and that the signs or our internal GPS leads us to our highest purpose and to the depth of our wisdom.
