e88. Building a Sustainable Beef Business with Webb Dulin

Join us as we welcome Webb Dulin, a dedicated farmer from Maryland's Eastern Shore, who walks us through his transformative journey into grass-fed beef farming. Webb shares his fascinating transition from crop farming to raising cattle, offering a glimpse into the unique challenges he faced due to environmental concerns and the area's high real estate values. Listen in as he reveals the strategies that helped him adapt his family's generational farming legacy into a thriving livestock operation, against the backdrop of a region more known for its crop cultivation than cattle rearing.

Explore the nuances of regenerative agriculture with Webb as he details the ins and outs of starting a grass-fed livestock operation from scratch. Discover the careful considerations that go into selecting the right cattle breeds for grass efficiency and the importance of implementing rotational grazing systems. Webb provides a compelling narrative on the economic aspects of sustainable farming, including the wisdom of growing operations debt-free and the intricate balance between profitability and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

S.4 Ep.4: How Now Brown Cow?

S.4 Ep.4: How Now Brown Cow?

Foresters have been warning landowners for years about the potentially damaging impacts of cows in their woods. So it is not surprising that we raise an eyebrow when conversations start about intentionally integrating livestock and forests. In this episode of SilviCast we explore the management practice known as silvopasture, or the intentional integration of trees, forage, and livestock. Join us as we discuss what silvopasture is and is not, with Rich Straight, Technology Transfer Leader at the U.S. Forest Service’s National Agroforestry Center.

Silvopasture Tech Stack on the All for One for All Farm

Silvopasture Tech Stack on the All for One for All Farm

Technology is simply the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. We typically think of a “tech stack” as a set of digital technologies stacked together to build an application or run a business. Silvopasture regenerative farming use multiple farming styles that integrate together to create one well-balanced eco-system. On this episode of Tech Bites, host Jennifer Leuzzi talks with Ariane Daguin, founder and CEO of D’Artangnan, and her daughter Alix Daguin, principal at Duck Duck Design, about their new farm All For One For All (AOOA). The 501c3 non-profit farm in the Mid-Hudson Valley is geared for visits and education, with events, cooking classes, and a farm stand.

    Urban Agroforestry for Dryland Environments

    Urban Agroforestry for Dryland Environments

Urban agroforestry is the intentional use of perennial trees and shrubs to improve the sustainability and resilience of urban farms and communities. In this episode of Voices from the Field, NCAT Agroforestry Specialist Katherine Favor sits down with Christopher Marciello of Ecology Artisans — a regenerative landscape and design firm — to talk about urban agroforestry in dryland environments.

While urban agroforestry can take many forms, there are several design principles to keep in mind, no matter what your system looks like. These include sustainable water harvesting, soil development, habitat development, regionally appropriate plant species, and appropriately scaled food production. Chris and Katherine discuss how these design principles can be applied to create productive and regenerative urban agroforestry systems in arid areas.

    Silvopasture 101

    Silvopasture 101

In this episode of Voices from the Field, NCAT Sustainable Agriculture Specialist Katherine Favor sits down with silvopasture specialist Delie Wilkens to talk about the basics of silvopasture, an agroforestry practice integrating trees, forage, and the grazing of livestock.

Delie currently serves as the program analyst for the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, a nonprofit organization that works to advance the health and vitality of the nation’s working forests and forest-reliant communities. She has been working in forestry, agroforestry, and sustainable agriculture for many years, and has researched silvopasture adoption and best practices in the Southeast.

Less than one percent of farms in the U.S. use silvopasture, Delie says, although she sees it gaining popularity in the future.

Katherine and Delie discuss the benefits, applications, and social considerations surrounding silvopasture adoption in the U.S. Delie also shares advice for designing, implementing, and managing silvopasture systems as well as things to keep in mind before beginning a silvopasture enterprise.

    Agroforestry 101

    Agroforestry 101

Producing food requires land. As a result, forests are often razed to make space for crops or animals, creating environmental tradeoffs. But what if there were a middle ground between forest and farmland? In this episode, host Lisa Held explores the concept of agroforestry with Jacob Grace, a program manager at the Savanna Institute based in Madison, Wisconsin. They discuss varied agroforestry practices like alley cropping and silvopasture, potential environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration, and barriers that currently prevent more farmers from adopting the practices.
