    Alyssa Reynoso-Morris, Author

    Alyssa Reynoso-Morris, Author

Alyssa Reynoso-Morris  writes a delicious book about the sounds and sensations of cooking with her grandmother sharing the love of plantains and helps readers connect to the heart of Latin kitchens.  This book also taps into the love from ancestors through recipes.

Very few books have touched on the subject and also present The Bronx in a positive light.   Plantains are a food consumed all around the world which bring love and family together.  This book, "Platanos Are Love,” tells the story of history, culture and time spent with family.

Alyssa is Dominican/Puerto Rican, grew up in The Bronx and didn't learn to read until she was in fourth grade.  She owes her political science interest and efforts in pushing literacy to her Grandmother who was always watching the news, creating commentary and the original storyteller in the household.

From The Revolucion Podcast co-hosts Diego Lastra and Kathryn Garcia Castro, thank you to Nicole Valdez, Senior Manager of Publicity at Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing for her help in arranging this interview.

FOC is August 13 - Release Date: September 6, 2023

    1. Thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast. To start, Kill Your Darlings was described when first announced as Narnia meets Hereditary. Can you unpack that a bit for us?
    2. It’s safe to say this is a passion project for you guys, when did the bud of this story begin to take root?
    3. Bob, I simply love the crayon drawings the protagonist Rose makes, how do you approach drawing in a little kid style like that and making it feel genuine?
    4. Bob - do you draw in sequence, or do you take fantasy stuff first, then real world? Vice-versa?
    5. The main story takes place in the mid-90s, is there any significance to this being set then?
    6. Did any of you have imaginary friends growing up? If so, what were their names?
    7. The title is so great, but I gotta ask, did you have to kill any darlings as far as ideas or visuals while making this?

Ep. 20: Kate Manning: Gilded Mountain

Ep. 20: Kate Manning: Gilded Mountain

Page One, produced and hosted by author Holly Lynn Payne, celebrates the craft that goes into writing the first sentence, first paragraph and first page of your favorite books. The first page is often the most rewritten page of any book because it has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. We interview master storytellers on the struggles and stories behind the first page of their books.

    About the guest author:

Kate Manning's most recent novel, GILDED MOUNTAIN, was named an Indie Book Pick for November 2022. Manning is also the author of the critically acclaimed novels My Notorious Life and Whitegirl. A former documentary television producer and winner of two Emmy Awards, she has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times Book Review, Time, Glamour, and The Guardian, among other publications. She has taught creative writing at Bard High School Early College in Manhattan, and lives with her family in New York City.

    About the host:

Holly Lynn Payne is an award-winning novelist and writing coach, and the former CEO and founder of Booxby, a startup built to help authors succeed. She is an internationally published author of four historical fiction novels. Her debut, The Virgin's Knot, was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers book. She recently finished her first YA crossover novel inspired by her nephew with Down syndrome. She lives in Marin County with her daughter and enjoys mountain biking, surfing and hiking with her dog. To learn more about her books and private writing coaching services, please visit hollylynnpayne.com or find her at Instagram and Twitter @hollylynnpayne.

If you have a first page you’d like to submit to the Page One Podcast, please do so here.

As an author and writing coach, I know that the first page of any book has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. So I thought to ask your favorite master storytellers how they do their magic to hook YOU.

After the first few episodes, it occurred to me that maybe someone listening might be curious how their first page sits with an audience, so I’m opening up Page One to any writer who wants to submit the first page of a book they’re currently writing.

If your page is chosen, you’ll be invited onto the show to read it and get live feedback from one of Page One’s master storytellers. Page One exists to inspire, celebrate and promote the work of both well-known and unknown creative talent.

You can listen to Page One on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Pandora, Stitcher and all your favorite podcast players.

    Hear past episodes.

To get updates and writing tips from master storytellers, follow me on
    Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, and Instagram.

Until then, be well and keep reading!

Thank you for listening to the Page One Podcast, where master storytellers discuss the stories and struggles behind the critical first page of their books. If you liked this episode, please share it on social, leave a review on your favorite podcast players and tell your friends!

I hope you enjoy this labor of love as much as I love hosting, producing, and editing it. Please keep in touch by signing up to receive my newsletter at www.hollylynnpayne.com with the latest episodes each month. Delivered to your inbox with a smile.
