2. The Why Behind Literacy-Based Speech Therapy
Being in the educational field, we know that the use of books and reading to children is an important part of their language development. And while the role of SLPs vary by school, district, and state, many want to use a literacy-based approach with their students. However, they feel they need to defend their reasoning for using them.
With this research heavy episode, we share how literacy is a natural context for targeting specific language skills, improves communication, and benefits all students with whom you work with. Plus, we’ll identify various books to use that help practice different skills with repetitive texts.

Episode 30: How Special Educators Can Support Their SLPs with Tara from Autism Little Learners
#30 How Special Educators Can Support Their SLPs with Tara from Autism Little Learners
I’m going to have to be honest...I used to be very confused when it came to working with our SLPs. The students would leave my classroom or their general education classroom for usually 20 minutes 2-3 times a week and when they returned it was back to business as usual.
There wasn’t ever much, if any, collaboration between the SLP and myself. No carryover and no reinforcement of skills.
Recently, I finally realize that I needed to be working with the SLP a whole lot more than I was. So when you know better, you do better.
Today’s guest is Tara Tuchel from Autism Little Learners and she talks with us about how special education teachers can better support their speech and language pathologists.
Tara shares explains how she co-teaches alongside a special education teacher and how they decide together who is going to directly teach certain skills that can fall under either of their domains.
Her advice to special education teachers would be to see if there is a way to get the team together for a meeting at least once a month for things like
- mini-trainings for paraprofessionals
- learning different communication devices
- review behavior plans
- answering questions on how best to support the students
This episode was so needed for myself and I hope you will benefit as well.

A resource Tara would like to share with you is titled “At Home Visual Supports”. She created it for parents to use at home during the pandemic, but it has also been used by countless SLP’s, special education teachers, and paras to help learn how to implement some of the most simple visual supports in the classroom.
She also has a free mini-training on FB that walks parents and professionals through how to use many of these visual supports.
