Embracing Diversity: Insights from a Mother-Daughter Duo

In this episode, we chat with Emily and her mother, Andrea, about their experiences growing up in different social environments.

They talk about the challenges of speaking their minds when others are not receptive to different opinions. The conversation shifts to the differences between small towns and larger cities, with Andrea sharing how living in a melting pot like Dallas influenced her perspective. They highlight the importance of knowing social cues and speaking the right language in different situations.

Andrea reflects on how she raised Emily to be open-minded and not naive, sharing how she herself experienced a lack of diversity in college. They discuss the value of being true to oneself and not letting the fear of judgment hold them back, despite living in a small town.

Throughout the episode, Emily and Andrea's conversation is filled with witty banter and relatable anecdotes, making for a lighthearted and engaging listen. Tune in to catch Emily and Andrea's insights and join the fun!

    Everybody's Talkin'

    Everybody's Talkin'

Johnny and Mike are joined by long-time Town of Highland resident and town council member, Fred Bosch, and their neighbor, celebrity chef Justin Chapple, who talk holiday cooking and more! Mike ponders how long it will take before he gets to be considered a Barryville local (answer: probably never) and Johnny takes on Kanye West in a hot take on the news. All this, plus the Yulan Brass Duo live in the studio warming it up for the big Christmas tree lighting and the debut of Mike’s super fun punk rock mix of the EBIB theme song, “Everybody’s Talkin’." Can your heart stand it???

Hometown revival: She left the LA ad world to help her rural hometown community thrive

I am excited to invite you to my conversation with Melissa Hughes. Melissa and I met through Urban Exodus, as she was a dedicated reader in the early days of the project. When living in Los Angeles, she would often pursue the stories on the website during her lunch breaks, dreaming of her own escape.

After a few years of planning, scheming, and rooftop gardening, Melissa and her husband took a leap of faith and left LA  to return to her childhood stomping grounds in rural Western New York. When Livingston County last year made the decision to move their tourism office to the local chamber of commerce, they offered Melissa the role as director of tourism.

In our conversation we speak about Melissa's experience moving back to her hometown, finding purpose through your work, the urban/rural divide, rural gentrification and rising costs, and the power of art to transform.

This is a story about rural revitalization, returning to your hometown, and prioritizing quality of life and family connection.

The Art of Taking Risks: A Conversation with George Mullin, owner of Vintage Cafe in Havre de Grace

Harford County entrepreneur George Mullin, a visionary risk-taker, lives by the motto that you can't steal second with your foot on first. Experience has also taught him that  success takes a lot of good small decisions but failure takes only one or two big bad ones.  In this first part of a two-part episode, George talks about moving to Harford County as a child from North Miami Beach, nightclubbing during the 1970s and 1980s, and the valuble business lessons from his life in the food service business, including one of his current ventures -- Havre de Grace's Vintage Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor.  Memories, life lessons, and vision -- this episode has it all!

Never Underestimate the Power of Anger: A Conversation with Paralympic Gold Medalist Jessica Long

Never Underestimate the Power of Anger: A Conversation with Paralympic Gold Medalist Jessica Long

Jessica Long is an elite athlete with a jaw-dropping string of accomplishments and awards.  The path to that lofty status, however, has not been without frustration.  Along with her 29 Paralympic medals, Jessica has had to endure 25 surguries as a result of fibular hememila, a cogenital limb deficiency that led to the amputation of both legs below the knee.  Born to teenage parents in Russia, Jessica also had to learn to forgive her birth mother for giving her up  for adoption.  Instead of succuming to the anger that she acknowledges characterized her early years, Jessica transformed the power of that anger into determination and used it to fuel her wildly successful career as a Paryalympic swimmer.  Along with her own determination, Jessica credits her adoptive parents, Marylanders Beth and Stephen Long, and her Christian faith with making her the person she is today. This is Jessica's story and we're honored to share it on Mainstreet.

Havre de Grace Author Irmgarde Brown Discusses her Novel "Sister Jane."

After 28 years  as a librarian in the Harford County Public Library system, Havre de Grace resident Irmgarde Brown decided to write a novel.  On episode #34, this sometimes impulsive but talented Indianapolis native  stops by Mainstreet to talk about how she wound up living in Havre de Grace after stops in Chicago, New York, and Atlanta, and how along the way she studied acting,  got married, raised a family, and in June of this year became a published author with the release of her critically-acclaimed novel "Sister Jane." Ms. Brown also attempts to teach your humble hosts how to pronounce her name -- with mixed results.
