Ep. 13 - Jason A. Ramos Wildland Firefighter Smokejumper

Jason A. Ramos has devoted twenty-six years of his life to the fire service. His career began at the age of 17 as a volunteer with the Riverside County Fire Department, then progressed to wildland firefighting in Southern California. Smokejumpers are highly trained wildland firefighters who parachute into remote areas to fight fires. They also can be called upon to assist in search and rescue missions. Smokejumpers are highly specialized and trained professionals who work independently in some of the most difficult terrain imaginable. They remain one of the oldest resources deployed by government agencies today.  Let's Go!!

My guest today is Jason Ramos, a firefighter currently in his 30th season. He spent over half that time as an air-delivered firefighter. In our conversation we talk about what it's like to be in one of these infernos, the traits required of a smokejumper, and dive into some of the tactics and equipment used to put out forest fires. Below are the show notes with the associated time stamps:

    Smokejumper Speaks Up

    Smokejumper Speaks Up

Federal Smokejumper of Missoula Montana, Jesse Sankey realized jumping out of a perfectly good airplane into a wildland fire was far safer than speaking up for what he believed was right.
