Bonus Episode - To Forget History is to Repeat History with Keri Day

Bonus Episode - To Forget History is to Repeat History with Keri Day
Is America continually progressing towards a better and better future? Does a profit-at-all-costs economic framework permeate into how we treat our neighbors? Is racism something of the past or relevant today? Princeton theological seminary professor & economic thinker Keri Day unpacks this and more in our wide ranging conversation. Recorded in the spring of 2020 before we began officially producing our podcast. We're releasing it here as a bonus episode.

Part 2: Elevating Fathers with Dr. Ken Epstein, PhD, LCSW.

Part 2: Elevating Fathers with Dr. Ken Epstein, PhD, LCSW.

In response to the previous podcast on Fathers of New Mexico, Dr. Epstein shares his thoughts on the importance of such family-supporting organizations.

Our children need their father's family involvement to provide good role models and a healthy future.

Due to the mass incarceration of men of color, many fathers have been absent from their children's lives. The trauma associated with a father's absence contributes to generational family trauma.

New social welfare policies that recognize the impact of mass incarceration and the importance of fathers' involvement in families can go a long way to ensuring healthy children and families.

3:20 The "gut microbiome" or gut flora or gut microbiota are the microorganisms including bacteria, archaea and fungi that live in the digestive tracts of humans and other animals including insects.

3:50 the “Map the Meal Gap 2019” annual report from Feeding America found that 1 in 4 children experience food insecurity in New Mexico, the highest indices of childhood hunger in the nation. https://www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/new-mexico

15:50 SNAP aka the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps, provides nutrition benefits to food insecure families.

17:35 TANF aka Temporary Assistance for Needy Families operates differently state by state and supports a variety of programs that are aimed at helping income insecure families achieve more self-sufficiency.

18:35 Under the Trump administration, the "Public Charge" rule has been interpreted broadly and used widely to  reduce the number of people eligible for green cards and other visas in the United States and has consequently made benefits such as SNAP increasingly inaccessible to immigrant populations. https://www.inquirer.com/news/immigration-trump-hunger-food-stamps-public-charge-20200301.html

Adoption Truths Day: Demanding the truth about our adoption histories and identities - with Boon Young Han, Jenny Na, and kimura byol-nathalie lemoine

Adoption Truths Day: Demanding the truth about our adoption histories and identities - with Boon Young Han, Jenny Na, and kimura byol-nathalie lemoine
As international adoptees, everyone knows someone whose adoption records were falsified, manipulated, switched, or never existed in the first place. In fact, accurate, complete records are practically the exception to the rule. We also know the impact of inaccurate, patchy information on an adoptee’s identity. Most people take their birthdate, age, place of birth, and parents’ names for granted, but some adoptees fight for this information for our whole lives. This year marks the first annual Adoption Truths Day, which seeks to raise awareness and advocate for Korean adoptee rights. The online conference, which will be held tomorrow, features speakers from around the world, who will discuss the unethical practices of the Korean adoption system, including the ways in which children are relinquished and adopted, how their records are created and stored by agencies, and subsequently, the accessibility of accurate information. This episode features the first half of our conversation with three amazing adoptees: Boon Young Han, Jenny Na, and Kimura Byol. Each of them is a leader and pioneer of the Korean adoptee community, who has tirelessly worked to raise awareness of adoption issues, advocate for and support fellow adoptees, and push for social change in Korea. Boon Young HAN is an assistant professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Her research interests include adoption, unwed mothers, family welfare and the welfare state. She was adopted from Korea to Denmark, and returned to Korea in the early 2000s. She has been actively involved with the adoptee community over the past 2 decades. Jenny Na is one of the six founding members of Adoptee Solidarity Korea. ASK was a grassroots organization that sought to raise awareness to the root causes of adoption, effect change in Korean adoption policy, strengthen the adoptee community, and create a space for critical dialogue. kimura byol-nathalie lemoine is a conceptual multimedia feminist artist who works on identities and expresses it with calligraphy, paintings, digital images, poems, videos and collaborations. kimura*lemoine’s work has been exhibited, screened, published and supported nationally and internationally. As curator, ze has developed projects that give voice and visibility to minorities. As an adoptee activist archivist, ze is working on A.C.A (adoptees cultural archives) to document the history of adoptee’s culture through media and arts.

    [Swamp Stories] 1. Cashing In

In 2003, PhRMA and other special interests in Washington overcame conservative opposition in Congress — including then-Reps. Mike Pence (R-IN), Jim DeMint (R-SC), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and others —  to pass the largest social welfare program in a generation, Medicare Part D (the prescription drug program). But what nobody knew at the time was one member of Congress in particular was cashing in and preparing to walk through the revolving door to work for the pharmaceutical industry.

    Guests:

    • Former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) & former Heritage Foundation President
    • Former Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN) & Issue One ReFormers Caucus Co-chair

How Women's Views on Gender Roles are Changing in Central Asia, with Jildyz Urbaeva

As more countries in Central Asia transition to market economies, women are being left behind in the workforce despite high levels of education and employment. On this episode of The Open Mind, we're delighted to welcome Dr. Jonathan Metzl, professor of sociology and psychiatry at Vanderbilt University where he also directs the Center for Medicine, Health and Society. He is research director of the Safe Tennessee Project, a nonpartisan volunteer-based organization that's concerned with gun-related injuries and fatalities in America and in Tennessee.

In his new Basic Books, title “Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America's Heartland” my guest reveals how the backlash policies against a multicultural liberal America have mortal consequences even for the people they promise to help.

“Dying of Whiteness” says one of my favorite open mind guests Thomas Frank “is a diagnosis for America. It's not reassuring. Failing health, failing graduation rates, guns everywhere, our fantasies are driving us to an early grave and Metzl is lucid and careful and mercifully clinical in telling us exactly how this public health disaster came to be. Read it today. There is still time before the autopsy.”

When an infection goes unchecked, sepsis – a life-threatening systemic infection – can result. And the majority of sepsis cases begin at home, where diagnosis can take longer. This is not widely known, and until recently, efforts to combat this deadly disease focused on hospitals, not on identifying sepsis at home.

Al Cardillo, a lecturer in the School of Social Welfare, is leading the efforts to stop sepsis in at-risk patients being cared for at home, and was recently honored for his work. He is a 1981 LMSW alum of the School.
