Relax, soften, let go - Guided body scan

Relax, soften, let go - Guided body scan

In this guided meditation, Anne offers an introduction inspired by an interview conducted years ago of school kids who had been introduced to mindfulness. One of them, when asked what mindfulness means, quipped:

‘It means not hitting someone in the mouth.’

This funny and direct response implies that a mindfulness practice teaches us the ability to pause before we act, or react.

We explore in this meditation how shining a light inwards — learning to be with the body’s sensations moment by moment  — helps us become in touch with ourselves so that we can feel our emotions as they arise and subside. By learning to notice first, we become less likely to identify with the emotions. That means we will switch from ‘I am angry’ to ‘I am feeling anger and frustration’, for example. This distance between the emotion and the self gives us a new vantage point from which, when we feel reactive, there is the option to pause and choose the next action, rather than simply react.

With mindfulness anchored in the body, we feel what’s happening and we get to choose how we respond to our relationships with others and our environments. Anne also shares that while mindfulness is a great tool to notice upset, frustration, sadness or anger, it’s also a tool to connect more directly with positive emotions like joy, love or awe. And in this meditation, while we are exploring sensations scanning down the body, we also invite a sense of decompression, softening and letting go, in various areas of the body, to find a soothing and balanced attention.

    Enjoy!

    The Art of Listening

    The Art of Listening

Are you listening to yourself? Are you giving yourself your own time, love, and presence to tune into and acknowledge and learn from you?

Many people say they're such good listeners and friends. Though we can often feel resentful when we feel that is not reciprocated. And my question is, are you listening to yourself? Because if you are, then I bet you wouldn't find yourself in situations where you feel subtly resentful of your life or the people around you. Your body and your soul are always trying to speak to you and let you in on more of yourself. You are wise. You have everything you need within you and you have the answers to that which you are seeking.

When you gift yourself with the ability to stop and listen to you, you can bring in profound insights and clarity on the different areas of your life. Maybe you're over extending yourself in work, and your body wants you to hone in and give yourself more time to be with you. Maybe you just need some more rest! Maybe it's time to start practicing your sacred no, and trying that on for once!

What are you telling you? And what are you going to do with that information?

Giving someone our time and presence is one of the greatest gifts we can ever offer. And that is felt and remembered, wether it is acknowledged or not. Continue being a light in the world by being yourself, and offering your loving presence. It's quite simple. I promise you, you will not only learn a lot about yourself and who you are relating with, but you will feel grateful for the gift you extend by just being present with and open to another. It goes a long way.

    Much love #freetobe tribe!

    Grounded Amidst Fear and Anxiety

    Grounded Amidst Fear and Anxiety

What if any moment of anxiety, anger, or tension could actually be a direct portal to a deeply felt sense of groundedness in yourself?

In this episode, we explore the practice of softening into our innate groundedness—the part of us that is always steady beneath the noise and chaos.

As Pema Chödrön said, “…behind all the hardening and tightening and rigidity of the heart, there’s always fear. But if you touch fear, behind fear there is a soft spot…”

As we cultivate greater awareness of our inner worlds, we can begin to notice and approach moments of “rigidity of the heart” with curiosity. When we do so, any moment of anxiety, tension, anger, resistance, etc. becomes a portal back to ourselves.

Ariel shares her experience of exploring this practice and offers a simple meditation to help you come back to your groundedness amidst those active moments of rigidity.

    Unfolding into Nibbana

    Unfolding into Nibbana

Stages of meditative understanding, jhanas, are based on direct experience that unfolds into nibbana.  In meditation, jhanas provide arbitrary markers for gradual transitions to nibbana.  With uplifted qualities and softening in meditation, we can be clear about the quality of awareness that we cultivate.   What liberates is seeing with clear, open, and sensitive awareness.
This episode with Doug Kraft is a dhamma talk recorded with the Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group in Sacramento, California.
