Music Industry Experts: Jesse Coren, Founder, Mutual Friends

Music Industry Experts: Jesse Coren, Founder, Mutual Friends
We're speaking with Mutual Friends founder, Jesse Coren! Jesse Coren is the name behind some of your favorite artists—Jeremy Zucker, Chelsea Cutler, Quinn XCII, and ayokay. He founded Mutual Friends, a New York-based artist management company partnered with Visionary Music Group, in 2017 after a decade at dGi Management. Coren says the mission of Mutual Friends is to “bring good to the universe through art and music” and support the artists on his roster. Mutual Friends is now a team of four, but it didn’t start out that way: Coren was initially the sole manager for his clientele when he started up the company and continues to expand his team. Over years of working for management companies, Coren has amassed extensive knowledge on every aspect of the music and creative industries, especially the drastic ways it’s changed largely due to the rise of social media platforms. Music You’re Missing spoke to Coren about social media, independent artists, work-life balance, advice for aspiring managers, philanthropy, and more. Ep 19: Darren Hayes Part 1: Savage Garden, Affirmation & Spin

Ep 19: Darren Hayes Part 1: Savage Garden, Affirmation & Spin

Since 1996, Darren Hayes has released some of Australia's most loved pop music, both as half of Savage Garden and as a solo artist. In the first episode of a two-part special, we look at Darren's time alongside Daniel Jones in Savage Garden and hear from the singer about the two albums they released together (Savage Garden and Affirmation), how the duo exploded both locally and internationally with hits like "I Want You", "Truly Madly Deeply" and "I Knew I Loved You", and the development of their professional and personal relationship. Following Savage Garden's complicated split, Darren emerged as a solo artist and released Spin as his debut album in 2002. Containing singles "Insatiable", "Strange Relationship", "I Miss You" and "Crush (1980 Me)", its polished sheen and bouyant energy masked Darren's personal struggles — issues that would shape the rest of his solo career. Disarmingly candid and thoughtful in his answers, Darren gives great insight into his record-breaking music career. In Part 2 (coming soon), his solo albums from The Tension And The Spark up until new release Homosexual (out October 7) will be discussed.

    Episode #78 - Empires Fall - Part 2

    Episode #78 - Empires Fall - Part 2
This week we resume our in-depth exploration of "Empires Fall," the lead track from the forthcoming Year of the Demon compilation album.  The guys talk about how their observations and experiences with record label turmoil helped to shape and inform the lyrical content of the song.  Jarvis takes the listener line by line through the lyrics, including isolated vocal tracks and commentary as to the meaning and sometimes surprising origins of the words.  From there, Night Demon carries you step-by-step through the evolution of the song, which dates all the way back to late 2017 when it was considered for inclusion on the live album in an alternate form.  You will hear how "Empires Fall" was preceded by three vastly different lyrical themes.  We highlight key moments in the development of the song, such as the main riff lending a much-needed metal backbone and experiments as to the bridge, all with demo recordings to reflect the nascent, shifting state of "Empires Fall."  Finally, the band stress their philosophy of being concise, of avoiding repetition within songs, and how "Empires Fall" ultimately contains all necessary elements packed into a sub-three minute running time that somehow feels longer than it is.

Last week, the ABC's Four Corners program aired an explosive episode in which serious allegations of bullying and harassment were levelled at former CEO of Sony Music Australia, Denis Handlin.

The Quicky speaks to an industrial relations expert and hears some of your stories to find out what is really going on in offices and other sites across the country, and what we can all do to bring an end to workplace bullying.

Lin Manuel Miranda and Jon Chu’s colourism problem In The Heights

In The Heights, from Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu and based on Lin Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Tony-award winning musical, is a slice of summer joy with a colourism problem. The glaring omission of Afro Latinx cast members in a film set in the New York neighbourhood of Washington Heights, which has a predominantly Dominican Republican population, has been called out as erasure. The filmmakers say they’re aware of it and discussed it, so why this outcome?

BW+BL debrief on the latest revelations out of Britney Spears ongoing challenge to her 13-year conservatorship. “This conservatorship in abuse,” Spears told a Los Angeles court. “I want my life back.”
