Episode 585: In The Seats With....Carolina Markowicz and 'Toll' at TIFF '23

When you can avoid that sophomore slump, boy oh boy the sky is the limit...

We're back at the Toronto International Film Festival which is running from the 7th through the 17th here in our fair city and it's time to talk about a gem of a piece of cinema that we've managed to uncover,  It's time for 'Toll'.

Suellen, a Brazilian toll booth attendant and mother, falls in with a gang of thieves in an attempt to keep her family afloat. In doing so, she realizes she can use her job to raise some extra money illegally for a so-called noble cause: to send her son to an expensive gay conversion workshop run by a famous priest.

As you can imagine, things don't quite go to plan in spite of the best of intentions and Toll manages to be a truly complete effort as it blends a myriad of ideas an emotions into a very complex melting pot.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with writer/director Carolina Markowicz to talk all that is 'Toll' and so very much more...
