    A Conversation with Negar Zarassi

    A Conversation with Negar Zarassi

Welcome to season 7. I am joined by Negar Zarassi a Swedish-Iranian professional opera singer. She is extensively trained in classical music, holding two bachelor's degrees: from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Academy for Music and Drama in Gothenburg, both in Sweden. We discuss classical music, what is it? Why does it matter? And where's its place in modern society? All this and more!

'We have to learn to listen again' — Akram Khan's reimagined Jungle Book

'We have to learn to listen again' — Akram Khan's reimagined Jungle Book

In Jungle Book Reimagined, the celebrated choreographer Akram Khan brings Rudyard Kipling's classic and contested Jungle Book stories into a near-future world torn apart by the impacts of climate change. But with the original stories rooted in colonial perspectives, why revisit them a century later to tell a story of displacement amid environmental collapse?

Also, the role of Brünnhilde in Wagner's Ring Cycle is one of opera's most demanding. It requires a dramatic soprano voice with extraordinary power and maturity and is rarely tackled until a singer is well into their career. To learn more, we're joined by our ABC Top 5 resident, mezzo soprano Katrina Waters, who is investigating the mid-career transitions of female dramatic voices.

Also, we meet the organisers of Club Broadway, a pop-up party that features nothing but show tunes, and we discuss 'mad scenes' in 19th century opera with the Australian soprano Jessica Pratt. Welcome to the latest episode of Harmonious World, in which I chat with soprano Nanette McGuinness from Ensemble for These Times.

I've been listening to the E4TT album The Guernica Project and we discuss the individual movements of Guernica, as well as the other fascinating tracks.

Thanks to Nanette and E4TT for allowing me to play extracts from The Guernica Project alongside our conversation. I apologise for the incorrect listing of the tracks - the start is actually 'Mi corazon se ha dormido' by David Garner and the final one is the fourth movement from David's song cycle. Now you have to listen to the whole album to get the correct tracks!

Thank you for listening to Harmonious World. Please rate, review and share: click on the link and subscribe to support the show.

Don't forget the Quincy Jones quote that sums up why I do this: "Imagine what a harmonious world it would be if every single person, both young and old, shared a little of what he is good at doing."
