SERP’s Up | The need for an all-channels approach to SEO

SERP’s Up | The need for an all-channels approach to SEO

SEO shouldn’t be siloed. Mordy Oberstein, Head of SEO Branding, and Crystal Carter, Head of SEO Communication at Wix, discuss how SEOs should think about social media teams, branding, and other marketing channels.

Organic Search is just one channel to bring traffic and revenue to a website. What works for one channel may or may not work on another, but you’ll never know if you don’t communicate with the rest of the marketing team.

Your website should be considered the HQ for all digital activities, and its user experience should be consistent no matter the channel a user arrives from. As a result, SEO, social media, PPC, etc., should align with consistent messaging, content, and imagery.

Depending on the size of your organization and how many hats you have to wear as a marketer, prioritization can be critical, according to iPullRank’s Garrett Sussman, featured guest on the SERP's Up SEO Podcast. SEO may take six to 12 months to move the revenue needle, while PPC or social may be doing it today. Prioritize based on what’s driving revenue now while making time investments in other tactics for the future.

Knowing your audience is crucial when it comes to an omnichannel approach to marketing. A good way to understand who your audience is online is by using tools like SparkToro. With it, you can not only identify your audience but discover where they’re at and what they like. We’ll dive into how you can use the tool to fuel all of your marketing efforts from SEO to social!

Let’s ride the wave of the SERPs Up SEO podcast and explore omnichannel marketing!

News Take Episode 111: Outsmarting Google and Facebook: Helping Publishers Grow Their Audience Outside the Dominant Platforms

News Take Episode 111: Outsmarting Google and Facebook: Helping Publishers Grow Their Audience Outside the Dominant Platforms

    Guest: Rand Fishkin, SparkToro

What can publishers do to get out from under the dominant tech platforms that control the digital advertising space? How have other industries pushed back on Google's scraping of their data and coming between them and their audience? How can publishers take back control of our audience data so that we're not having to go through Google, Facebook and the other tech platforms to reach our own audience?

In this episode of News Take, News/Media Alliance President & CEO David Chavern is joined by Rand Fishkin, cofounder and CEO of audience research software firm SparkToro, for a fascinating conversation about the big tech platforms, their algorithms, and how the Internet has evolved from a once equitable environment that was mutually beneficial, to now favoring only a handful of giant tech platforms today. Rand paints a picture of the digital marketing landscape businesses must navigate today, highlighting concerns with tech platforms’ walled gardens in which they intentionally try to keep you from leaving. He shares SparkToro's research on "zero click searches" that has gained attention from marketers worldwide on how few web searches now result in a click through to the original content. And he explains how his company helps marketers understand their audience’s behaviors and preferences without having to rely on Google and Facebook, and the importance of taking back ownership of your audience relationships and data.

Rand Fishkin - Growing An Audience Without Facebook Or Google

We are hanging out with Rand Fishkin today, who previously co-founded the SEO company MOZ, and has most recently started a new venture with SparkToro. This tool is quickly becoming one of our favorite pieces of software to do a lot of research. It helps us figure out what content to create around specific topics, what topics resonate around audiences, and you can literally plug in your URL or social media channel and it will kick out all this research from a variety of platforms.

If you are running ads, you are probably noticing lately higher costs, fewer options, and lower conversions. We break a lot of that down from Rand’s perspective and you’ll see why it’s important to diversify from Facebook and Google if you are solely relying on those platforms. You’ll also hear us talk about what’s in store for the future with the way Google presents search results, and what you should be doing to rely less on links while building up your brand. After you listen, get some more advertising tips with Curt Maly and Tom Breeze

The primary goal is to get people to your website and your email list because that’s the one channel you always get to own and control.” - Rand Fishkin

    Some Topics We Discussed Include:

    • Perspectives on the zero clicks search problem
    • Checking out the Crack Shack (it’s not what you think!)
    • How to get honed in on a specific audience that will convert better
    • What do cookies and strange pajamas have to do with advertising?
    • Why getting people to like and share should be your secondary goal
    • From chicken sandwiches in your email to ground beef in your advertising to al dente pasta on Youtube, we got you covered!
    • Which ad networks are lacking in quality and which ones you should be using

Rand Fishkin has founded many platforms like moz.com, Whiteboard, inbound.org, and Whiteboard Friday before his latest platform, SparkToro. Listen as he shares his journey with Geordie Wardman. He also gives extensive details about SparkToro, an audience intelligence platform that allows marketers to understand websites that an audience reads. Marketers can use this platform to know who their target audience follows on various social media platforms.

    What You Will Learn

    • How Rand dropped out of college and the events that followed
    • How Moz was established
    • How Moz evolved and achieved success in revenue generation
    • Hy did Rand leave Moz?
    • How is Moz different from SparkToro?
    • How Rand and his co-founder started SparkToro
    • Alternative content marketing strategies that companies can use
    • How the audience intelligence product works
    • How did the SparkToro launch go?
    • What are Rand’s marketing plans?

    In This Episode:

Education is critical, but sometimes it takes dropping out of college to become one of the most successful SaaS or SEO gurus available. Rand, for example, dropped from college in 2001 to join his mom at a marketing consulting company. This company would later become Moz. Then, the company was a struggling web design venture, forcing Rand to launch an SEO blog. This blog attracted lots of consulting customers who were interested in SEO services.

Rand and his team would later launch some software, nascent tools that interested parties could subscribe to. To their amazement, demand for the subscription product skyrocketed, and that is how they raised part of their venture capital. The success of Moz did not stop here, and you can get all the details from the podcast.

Listen to figure out how Rand became CEO, and how the company experienced exponential growth before Rand finally left to establish SparkToro. Rand discusses the venture model in detail. If you are an entrepreneur looking to launch a company, you need to listen to Rand’s wise words. Rand says he and his co-founder own SparkToro entirely. Listen as he shares more details on SparkToro with Geordie. For years, Rand has been a passionate marketer, and many people sought him for assistance on SEO matters. However, Rand made a critical discovery about SEO and search. Listen as he shares the discovery with Geordie.

Rand discusses the frustrations entrepreneurs have to deal with when it comes to identifying potential customers from different parts of the world. He tells Geordie that together with his co-founder, they decided that no one should go through these troubles. Listen to find out what they did to achieve that milestone.

Rand mentions that while he works with his co-founder, they have hired some experts to help them during their journey. Listen to Rand explain how the audience intelligence works, how it helps collect data, and how they use the data to develop a validation system. Rand explains that he believes in a marketing flywheel model.

Currently, Rand says he is excited because they have a diverse market and extensive applications. One of the strategies online marketers use to attract traffic is through guest posts and links. However, Rand says that this method hardly works unless your platform is SEO based. According to him, many of the links you use for SEO hardly send back traffic.

The SparkToro system is different because it sends you high-quality traffic. In this case, you would not need a link because your objective is to get coverage and awareness. Rand says that email list building has been one of their most successful marketing strategies. Still, he is quick to mention that, together with his co-founder, they are hesitant about sending people too many emails. They only strive to send emails that will be beneficial to you.

According to Rand, SEO, or SEM (search engine marketing) are not a terrible strategy, but they are risky. He explains this concept in detail and concludes by saying that some businesses have come tumbling down for relying on search exclusively.

Rand opines that investing in social media and content marketing that does not depend on SEO, but the quality of content is a great idea. Marketers should invest in content that leaves an impact on people so much so that they would miss it if it were unavailable. Rand has some sentiments about podcasting as well. Listen as he shares what he thinks and how you can use them to your benefit.
