Mark 2 | Daring Faith, Healing Forgiveness, and the True Sabbath Gift

Mark 2 | Daring Faith, Healing Forgiveness, and the True Sabbath Gift

Imagine being so compelled by faith that you tear through a roof to ensure a friend encounters the healing touch of Jesus. That's the audacious belief we unpack in today's discussion, where we dissect the story of the paralytic from Mark 2. Our conversation paints a vivid picture of transformation, revealing the magnitude of Jesus' power to forgive and heal, as we contemplate on the impact of introducing others to Christ. By examining Jesus' interaction with societal outcasts like Levi, we challenge listeners to see beyond the surface, understanding His ministry as an invitation to change, not an acceptance of sin.

As dawn breaks on the Sabbath, many find themselves entangled in misconceptions about this holy day. We clear the fog, embracing Jesus' teaching that the Sabbath is a gift for our rejuvenation, not a cumbersome rulebook. Reflecting on the purpose of this day of rest can lead to renewed spiritual vigor and a deeper understanding of its role in our lives. Our conversation extends a hand to those grappling with the delicate balance between faith and compassion, inviting you to reinvent your approach to this divinely ordained pause in our weekly rhythm.

In Mark 2, the narrative unfolds with Jesus' return to Capernaum, where He astounds the crowds by forgiving the sins of a paralyzed man lowered through the roof by his friends. This act of forgiveness sparks controversy among the religious leaders, who question Jesus' authority to forgive sins. Jesus responds by demonstrating His authority to forgive by healing the paralyzed man, revealing His divine power to both heal and forgive.

The chapter progresses with Jesus calling Levi, also known as Matthew, a tax collector, to follow Him. This action stirs criticism from the religious elite, who question Jesus' association with sinners and tax collectors. In response, Jesus asserts His mission to call sinners to repentance, emphasizing His role as a physician who ministers to the spiritually sick.

Mark 2 concludes with Jesus addressing questions about fasting, highlighting the significance of His presence as a cause for celebration rather than mourning. He uses the analogy of new wine in fresh wineskins to illustrate the need for spiritual renewal and flexibility in embracing His teachings.

Mark 2 showcases Jesus' authority over sin and sickness, His willingness to reach out to the marginalized, and His invitation to repentance and renewal. This chapter challenges readers to reconsider their preconceptions about religious exclusivity and embrace the transformative power of Jesus' inclusive and compassionate ministry.

Our Lady and the Holy Spirit

Our Lady and the Holy Spirit

Our Lady is a perfect model of holiness and love.  Heading towards Pentecost, we can reflect on her relationship with her Divine Spouse, the Holy Spirit.  To have God's Spirit is to have Christ's own motivation, to be inspired by the same spirit that he was.  We see this in Mary, who says "Be it done unto me according to your word."  The Spirit is a renewer of the soul.  To have the Spirit as our spirit pays off in spades, namely, the beautiful fruits of the Holy Spirit.

    Psalms 81, 88, 92-93 | Crying Out in Dissapointment

    Psalms 81, 88, 92-93 | Crying Out in Dissapointment

Psalm 81 is a call to worship and a reminder of God's faithfulness. The psalmist urges the people to sing and make music to God, who brought them out of slavery in Egypt and provided for them in the wilderness. God reminds them to listen and obey His commandments so that they may prosper. However, the people are disobedient and God laments their refusal to listen and follow His ways.

Psalm 88 is a lamentation of the psalmist's suffering and loneliness. He cries out to God for help and feels abandoned and rejected. The psalmist's pain is physical and emotional, and he sees no relief in sight. He pleads with God to answer him and rescue him from the depths of despair.

This is a unique psalm in that it does not offer a resolution to the psalmist's suffering. It is a lamentation that describes a situation of extreme distress, loneliness, and despair. The psalmist cries out to God for help, but there is no indication that God responds or provides relief. This lack of resolution makes the psalm even more poignant, as it shows us that even faithful followers of God can experience times of great distress and pain.

Despite the lack of resolution, the psalm does offer us insight into the nature of suffering and faith. The psalmist is not afraid to express his feelings of abandonment and rejection to God. He is honest and vulnerable in his prayers, even though he does not receive an answer. This shows us that we too can bring our troubles and worries to God, even if we do not receive immediate relief.

Psalm 92 is a song of praise and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness and goodness. The psalmist exalts God's works and righteousness and declares that the wicked will perish while the righteous will flourish. The psalmist also acknowledges that God's ways are beyond human understanding, but they trust in Him and His unfailing love.

Psalm 93 is a hymn proclaiming the sovereignty of God. The psalmist declares that God is King and has established the world on firm foundations. The psalmist marvels at the power and majesty of God, who is mightier than the roaring waves of the sea. The psalm ends with a declaration of God's enduring faithfulness and holiness.

    72. Tree by Tree: Planting for the WHOLE community of creation, with Scott Sabin of Plant with Purpose

In this episode, Forrest talks with Scott Sabin, Executive Director of the organization Plant with Purpose — an international faith-based organization that empowers the poor in rural areas around the world where poverty is connected to deforestation. Importantly, their approach to community development includes not just the planting of food-producing trees on farms, but also the work of the reforestation and species diversification of publicly shared land. Among other things, Scott explains that the tens of millions of trees the organization has helped to plant over the years can seem insignificant when one looks at the enormity of the deforestation problem across the globe. However the crucial practice for staying the course is to focus on the part each of us can play, and trust God to multiply our efforts.
