HOMEGROWN: 10 Years of Holy Holy | A Tale of Chance Encounters, Nostalgic Gigs, and Dedicated Fans

HOMEGROWN: 10 Years of Holy Holy | A Tale of Chance Encounters, Nostalgic Gigs, and Dedicated Fans

Join Timothy Carroll and Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy as they sit down with Matty O on Triple M Homegrown to commemorate a decade of incredible music and memories. From their chance encounter as English teachers in Thailand to their rise to worldwide success, this episode takes you on an unforgettable journey through the band's remarkable history.

The conversation begins with the boys reminiscing about their time in Thailand, where they initially crossed paths but struggled to master the local language. Fast forward to the present day, and their journey has led them to heights they could have never imagined during those early days.

Back in Australia, Tim shares a heartwarming memory of witnessing Oscar's previous band, 'Dukes of Windsor,' achieve their own success. Little did they know that their paths would converge again in Sweden, where Oscar found himself crashing on Tim's couch while working on a 'Dukes of Windsor' record in Berlin, Germany.

With minimal production experience and basic equipment, Tim approached Oscar with some musical ideas. Being the production wiz he is, Oscar jumped in to help bring those ideas to life. The duo's chemistry was undeniable, and though they never intended to form a band, the magic they created together was undeniable.

Their first song 'Impossible Like You,' released in 2013, exceeded all expectations, receiving national radio airplay and opening doors to countless gigs. This unforeseen success set them on a course that would change their lives forever.

Tim and Oscar also share touching moments they've experienced with fans, from encountering devoted admirers with tattoos of their lyrics to fans claiming they gave birth to a non-stop playlist of Holy Holy music.

Matty takes the duo on a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane, reliving some of their biggest shows to date. The recounting of their first major gig at the Palais Theatre brings laughter as they recall committing a rookie mistake of forgetting their equipment – a tale that has become part of their band's folklore.

Going behind the scenes at Splendour in the Grass, Tim and Oscar recall their exhilarating experience performing at the festival, from braving the mud to camping on site and even playfully sharing a stolen bottle of Jamison from Oh Mercy.

In a surprising twist, they share an amusing story of being mistaken for a David Bowie cover band due to their band name "Holy Holy."

The episode concludes with delightful anecdotes of their encounters with music sensations Billie Eilish and Coolio at Groovin The Moo, solidifying their position in the music world as artists who have had the honor of sharing moments with music icons.

As the son of Yothu Yindi bass player Stuart Kellaway, Roy reminisces about his early memories of touring with a band as a child. These experiences have undoubtedly shaped his musical journey with King Stingray.

King Stingray is on the rise, and Roy reveals some incredible moments that made them pinch themselves with excitement. Meeting legends like Jimmy Barnes at the APRA Awards, Paddy Mills at SXSW, and spending time backstage with Midnight Oil are just a few of the memorable encounters they've had along the way.

Whether it's navigating the music scene or providing feedback on demos, the band has found valuable guidance from this influential figure.

Roy recalls an unforgettable experience of performing in an extremely muddy tent at Splendour In The Grass, entertaining a packed audience despite the challenging conditions.

Additionally, Roy shares what it was like to perform with Colin Hay at the APRA Awards, giving us an exclusive peek into the behind-the-scenes moments during rehearsals.

The Woman Behind Splendour In The Grass

The Woman Behind Splendour In The Grass

Jessica Ducrou, you might not know her name but you've definitely heard of her work.

She's the person behind Splendour In The Grass, Falls Music And Arts Festival and Homebake, to name a few.

Jess is a trailblazer and arguably one of the most powerful people in the Australian music industry. If you've ever been to one of her festivals or a gig she's booked you could consider her the person in charge of making memories.

But getting to this point was in no way straightforward. It takes a lot of moxie, some cold calling and a whole lot of networking to create events like these.

So how does someone organise an event with over 50,000 people in attendance? What is the key to making an event great? And what is it really like to be working in the live music industry during a pandemic?

Does Quaden Deserve Donations? & The Power Of #MeToo

Does Quaden Deserve Donations? & The Power Of #MeToo

The lovely Amila returns to the mic today! Scott is away, but she joins Gordon to delve into a few meaty topics.

We look at the sad, yet inspiring situation with indigenous 9-year-old Quaden Bayles. His GoFundMe is sitting at nearly $800,000 - but should the funds be spread out across multiple bullying victims and charities?

Old m8 (m8 is generous tbh) Harvey Weinstein was finally convicted in court, in a big win for the #MeToo movement. So with a sentencing incoming, we're wondering how much power do collective voices have these days?

And finally, Splendour's BIG 20th Anniversary lineup was released last week, but just how 'big' was it? We chat the lineup, nostalgia acts, the lack of female headliners + whether it's worth going.

    Coronavirus Spreads Fear & What's Kobe's Legacy?

In today's ep, the Coronavirus is absolutely everywhere in the news. But why are we so worried about something that has less of a chance of killing us than the flu?

We also chat about Kobe Bryant's tragic passing, his sexual assault case and what his legacy will be now that he's gone.

And we have two HUUUGE festivals on our doorsteps; Groovin The Moo & Splendour. So naturally we're speculating about who's going to be on the 2020 lineup!

The Streets Take 5 with songs of then and now

The Streets Take 5 with songs of then and now

In the early 00’s The Streets burst onto the scene. Original Pirate Material was like nothing else around. Combining garage beats with everyday stories from a geezer we could all relate to. Mike Skinner wanted to literally push things forward, taking the garage genre in a new direction and using his lyrics to talk about what was really going on inside the hearts and minds of people in the clubs. It struck a chord, and The Streets got a lot of attention. Over five albums Mike Skinner would tour Australia a whole lot, always playing festivals and always drawing a huge crowd. Then in 2011 he called it a day, releasing his final album and doing his final shows as The Streets. Music stayed in his life though. He threw himself into producing, directing, and most notably DJ-ing, behind the decks instead of out front on stage. Across his five songs choices we get a snapshot of a kid writing raps in his notebook in a hostel in Sydney. As well as the man today who is older, wiser, more grounded but with plenty of stories to tell. From Johnny Cash to Grim Sickers to Daft Punk, this is The Streets, Taking 5 with Zan Rowe and playing us his songs from then and now.

Johnny Cash – 'A Boy Named Sue'

Snoop Dogg – 'Serial Killa (ft. The D.O.C., Tha Dogg Pound and RBX)'

Grim Sickers – 'Open the Till (ft. Ghetts and Mike Skinner)'

Daniel Bedingfield – 'Gotta Get Through This'

Daft Punk – 'Human After All / Together / One More Time / Music Sounds Better With You' (from Alive 2007)
