In 2015, at the World Tour Finals in Whistler, Canada, professional skier Jamie MoCrazy suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The elite athlete collapsed into a coma on the mountain as doctors raced to treat multiple brain bleeds. Her recovery meant learning how to talk, walk and ski again.

Today, she leads the non-profit, MoCrazy Strong Foundation, to educate TBI survivors and family caregivers "on ways to understand how to build a productive life worth living after brain injury."

Smashing it: Badminton's Susan Egelstaff on beating knee injury & reaching Olympic dreams

Smashing it: Badminton's Susan Egelstaff on beating knee injury & reaching Olympic dreams

Commonwealth medal-winning badminton player Susan Egelstaff had her sights firmly set on the London 2012 Olympics when disaster struck. Sitting in the GB No. 1 spot everything was on course to qualify when she suffered a terrible knee injury. In this brilliant episode, she talks candidly about what it was like after 14 years of training to get to this point only to face having your dreams swept away. You don't have to be a badminton player to emphasise with Susan's story, it will resonate with any athlete who has faced or is facing a similar situation.

Top-level badminton is a  high-energy sport requiring a ton of pivoting and jumping, Susan's injury caused her thigh and shin bones to 'smash' together. Prof Mackay who performed her surgery explains more about this unusual injury and why he felt it happened.  Recounting that time now you can still hear the emotion Susan felt on hearing her diagnosis and the prospect of a long recovery.

Sportspeople in any field will be fascinated to hear Susan talk openly about how she hated her slow, arduous rehabilitation process and how lonely it was. But she also talks about how much she was helped by talking to a sports psychologist who played a pivotal role in maintaining her mental health and positivity throughout. She has some great tips about coping with both sides of recovery.

This is a fascinating, deep dive with a funny, engaging guest looking not only at what it takes to get to the highest level in sport but also at what can happen when serious injury strikes. More importantly though, it is a tale of snatching a hard-won victory from the jaws of defeat.

From surgery to summit - Kirsty Mack's incredible Everest adventure

From surgery to summit - Kirsty Mack's incredible Everest adventure

Prof Mackay nearly crashed his car when he tuned into Heart Radio and heard Jennifer chatting to a former patient, Kirsty Mack, about becoming only the 6th ever Scottish woman to climb Everest! The reason for his astonishment was that he and the mountaineer and ski instructor met after she crashed, skiing off-piste in Scotland, was whisked off the mountains by helicopter and then ended up on his operating table having surgery for the bad shoulder injury she sustained. So of course we had to invite her to talk to us more.

For her part, Kirsty remembers thinking that after following her rehab to a tee she would soon be as right as rain again. But, as she found out, serious shoulder injuries like this can leave lasting effects.

In an incredible episode, we talk to this high-octane adventurer about scaling some of the world's highest mountains without the full function of one arm. What it takes out of her physically and how it has affected her mentally when skiing or climbing.

We talk about her shoulder - fracture dislocation, and why the injury was so serious,  in terms of what it meant for someone whose use of full arm extension and grip is crucial. Prof Mackay explains more about the injury and why surgery was necessary.

Of course, we also talk from the comfort of our studio about what an incredible experience it was getting to the top of the world - the highs, the lows, the danger points and listen out for the huge twist near the end of Kirsty's Everest tale!

Kevin Colley on Career Ending Injury and His Path to Recovery Through Psychedelic-Therapy

Kevin Colley on Career Ending Injury and His Path to Recovery Through Psychedelic-Therapy

Kevin Colley, a former professional hockey player with over a decade of experience, including a stint with the NHL's New York Islanders, embarked on a profound journey earlier this year. Invited by fellow retired NHL player Riley Cote, Kevin participated in a transformative psychedelic-focused retreat as a patient of WAKE's clinical program in Jamaica. This experience allowed him to shed years of emotional and physical trauma stemming from a devastating neck injury in January 2006 that prematurely ended his hockey career and plunged him into a dark and seemingly hopeless period of his life.

Our conversation also delves into the concept of male masculinity, particularly in individuals like Kevin who spent their lives in physically demanding and "tough guy" sports such as hockey. Kevin's story highlights the importance of finding the courage to seek help when needed. It's yet another inspirational tale of healing and discovering one's true self through the transformative power of psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Neuroscientist Steven Broglio, PhD., one of the world's leading experts on the management of sports concussion, and co-author of the international Concussion in Sport Group (CISG) consensus statement breaks down its significance. He also explains why football is the safest it's ever been in the history of the game.

Neuroscientist Steven Broglio, PhD., one of the world's leading experts on the management of sports concussion, and co-author of the international Concussion in Sport Group (CISG) consensus statement breaks down its significance. He also explains why football is the safest it's ever been in the history of the game.

Whether amateur or pro, the international Concussion in Sport Group (CISG) consensus statement impacts the care received by players if hit in the head during a game. Steven Broglio, PhD. is the director of the Michigan Concussion Center, the Neurotrauma Research Laboratory, and co-author of the CISG consensus statement. He is also a professor of athletic training, neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Michigan.

As part of the international team of researchers playing an important role in shaping the consensus on recognizing and treating concussion in sport, Dr. Broglio joined writer, journalist, and traumatic brain injury survivor Christina Brown Fisher to discuss current scientific knowledge, research findings, and clinical experience. Plus, he explains why banning football is not the answer to eliminating head injury in sports.

This podcast discusses scientific research findings and is not intended to diagnose or provide personal or individual medical advice. If you have an existing health condition, always consult your healthcare practitioner.

Richard Gough -all hail the king - talking to footballing giant and Ranger's talisman

Richard Gough -all hail the king - talking to footballing giant and Ranger's talisman

Well, one thing's for sure Scotland could have done with a little of the magic of former Captain Richard Gough in their friendly against England recently. We however were lucky enough to welcome him to the podcast. Dominating football in the 90s, Richard was capped 61 times for Scotland and played for famous clubs like Everton and Tottenham Hotspur. But for the young lad who started his career at Dundee United, it was his ten years with Rangers, many as Captain, for which he is most famous.  He was the first Scottish player to be transferred to a Scottish team for over £1,000,000 and he joined in what was to become a golden era for the club winning 9 league titles, 3 Scottish Cups, and 6 League Cups.

Known as 'Captain Blood, for his fearless defense Richard suffered a few injuries in his career but interestingly it was neuromas in both feet that he remembers causing him immense pain and a particularly bruising thigh injury which required an ambulance dash to A&E. Prof Mackay explains what a neuroma is why they cause so much pain and what can be done surgically to help.

Of course, this episode is absolutely full of amazing tales and anecdotes from Richard's playing career so if you want to hear about some of his finest moments, the famous late goals, what it felt like pulling on the famous blue top for the first time and playing with some of the biggest household names of the time, under some of the most famous managers, stick on your headphones and settle back.

We also have a fascinating chat about his own stint as a manager, what he thinks of management style today, and how his connection to Rangers continues on.

    Don't miss it!

Ep.9 How to Rebound from a Traumatic Injury like a Boss!

Ep.9 How to Rebound from a Traumatic Injury like a Boss!

Almost every athlete encounters the perfect storm. What’s that you ask?

First, an injury and second, the process of re-bounding from a traumatic injury. For some, the damage may be so insignificant that they never miss a practice, game or team event. Others may suffer minimal damage, and may only require a day of treatment, three-quarters speed at practice and are lucky enough to be signed off medically to play come game time.

On the other hand, there are times when players suffer injuries that take them out of play for extended periods of time; for a season, even out of play completely. The emotional roller coaster that an athlete endures can be one of the most difficult challenges they’ll ever face.

Sadly, many fail to navigate the process of effectively recovering and getting back onto the field. The Ego has a way of motivating injured athletes to do too much too soon causing them to make matters worse or re-injure themselves. Some athletes find themselves stuck and unable to accept the fact that life as they’ve known it may never be the same. These same athletes also fail to realize that their lives can in fact take a turn for the best, and flourish.

In this episode, Ty shares how he navigated an emotional tsunami after suffering multiple traumatic injuries on the football field, and the internal breakdown he experienced after learning from the doctor that he was destined to lose his right leg. Ty provides intimate details of his experience and the mental warfare he endured, and further lays out a roadmap to help injured athletes express their emotions and overcome their situation to feel motivated, inspired and able to be victorious in their endeavors.

Ankle injury in sport - recognise, treat and prevent it

Ankle injury in sport - recognise, treat and prevent it

We've all done it - rolled an ankle, it's agony, quickly goes an impressive black and blue so you strap it up and sit on the sofa watching boxsets for a couple of days before resuming life and sport as if nothing had happened. But, in this episode we ask, should we all be taking ankle injuries more seriously?

In this episode listen in to your very own ankle injury consultation with sports surgeon Prof Gordon Mackay and Jennifer Reoch. Because it is such a common injury, not just in sport but in everyday life, we tend not to take ankle injury too seriously but this can cause problems and some more severe injuries can remain undiagnosed and untreated. The pair discuss how that is possible and why sometimes you can even return to high-level sport without realising the extent of the damage. So they discuss how to recognise this may be the case for you and knowing how and when to seek professional advice.

They analyse the mechanics of the ankle joint, why is it so prone to injury, the sports that put it under the most pressure, and the different injuries that occur. They also talk about how you can avoid ankle injury and chat over some common preventative methods such as strapping - does it really help and how and when should you use it?

Some are put off seeking further treatment by the thought of a lengthy layoff during recovery but Prof Mackay touches on more modern treatments available which can mean an accelerated recovery these days.

If you need to know more about ankle injuries download this episode of Surgical Goals today.

    Meniscus Tears

    Meniscus Tears
