Season 2 of the Penn Stated podcast kicks off in grand fashion this week as spring weather -- not to mention spring practice in Happy Valley -- is firmly upon us.
Host Donnie Collins discusses some of the big questions surrounding the Nittany Lions as camp opens (visit The Times-Tribune to read about some of them), including head coach James Franklin's concerns that leadership will need to begin developing this spring.

Donnie also chats with his special guest, former Penn State offensive lineman and West Scranton High School football and wrestling legend Eric Shrive, who looks back on his playing days and what spring football meant to him. Which member of the staff is most important to players at this time of year? Is this really the time of year where position battles begin to get settled?

Also, Shrive discusses an important community event coming up Saturday at Scranton High School: The Impact Athlete Wrestling Clinic. A joint venture of the West Scranton Wrestling Alumni Association and the Lehigh Valley Health Network, the event will bring four Penn State wrestlers -- including three-time national champions Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks -- to the area to be guest instructors at the free clinic.

In this episode, Gene challenges the thought of Football in the Spring.

While most media members ignored it or tried to paint a narrative that nobody was paying attention, the USFL just completed their first season. That culminated over July 4th weekend when the Birmingham Stallions defeated the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL Championship held in Canton Ohio. Fox Sports president Eric Shanks did not allow any speculation to begin when he announced last week that the USFL will return next season. The ratings have been steady throughout the season. Games averaged over a million viewers on Fox and NBC. Even when you add in the cable network games on USA Network and FS1 the averages were still 715,000. Those numbers were better than the NHL, Premier League and MLS in this country. All three of those entities people will argue with you that there is an appetite for those sports but not for Spring football.

Matt and Ian review the USC spring game and touch on the various big talking points after a very successful end to spring practice for Lincoln Riley and the Trojans.

Montana hosted its 2022 spring football game in Hamilton, Montana on April 8, 2022. The Griz scrimmaged for 78 minutes. 

The action included interceptions by Trajon Cotton and Corbin Walker plus a near interception by Trevin Gradney during a first half dominated by defense on both sides. In the second half, the quarterbacks continued to struggle to complete passes but came on toward the end. 

Lucas Johnson hit Ryan Simpson for an 11-yard touchdown and Kris Brown lofted a 25-yard scoring toss to Aaron Fontes for the most formidable scores of the day. Fontes also tracked down Dylan Simmons from behind on what could and should've been a 99-yard pick-6 if not for Fontes running behind the Montana bench for most of the way tracking Simmons down. 

Following the action, Montana head coach Bobby Hauck, junior linebacker Braxton Hill and Fontes, a sophomore, addressed the media. 

Spring football starts at Texas on March 22 and Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian stops by the On Second Thought podcast to give a primer on what fans can expect this fall.
The Horns are coming off a 5-7 season in Sark’s first season and signed a top-five recruiting class. He breaks down the quarterback situation with Quinn Ewers transferring from Ohio State and the addition of former TCU coach Gary Patterson to the staff in an analyst role.
Hosts Cedric Golden and Kirk Bohls preview the Big 12 tournaments, and give their favorite memories from the Erwin Center, which will give away to the Moody Center next season.

The guys are ecstatic as they welcome football back with the biggest event of April...The FSU Spring Game! The guys give their takeaways from what looks to be a successful event hosted by Mike Norvell and staff. With spring football finished, the guys get into Spears and Jeers and someone on the pod seems very optimistic of where this football season is headed. The guys shift gears and get into the NBA, as Mike gives a brief Heat Check and they debate the usage of the play in tournament and what it means for teams on the fringe of the playoff bubble. Soccer talk closes it out as Paul gives an update on Swansea City and the guys banter on the return of Inter Miami, Orlando City and MLS.
