#198 Brandon Shack-Harris: Two-Time WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner w/ 3.5 Live MTT Cashes

#198 Brandon Shack-Harris: Two-Time WSOP Gold Bracelet Winner w/ 3.5 Live MTT Cashes
Today’s guest on CPG has two WSOP gold bracelets, has cashed for $3.5 million in live MTTs, and is one of the coolest and most genuine humans I’ve ever had the pleasure of getting to know… Brandon Shack-Harris.

So I have a New Year’s lesson I wanna share with you before you dive into today’s show.

I took some time off from my usual slate of podcasts throughout the holidays and recorded just a handful of episodes. Around mid-December (When this episode was originally recorded) my burning desire for cranking out tons of weekly episodes was starting to wane.

The story I told myself was that the CPG Wolf project needed most of my waking energy and anything that took away from that was an unnecessary distraction.

And I believed that story right up until the moment I pressed record with Brandon Shack-Harris.

As I found myself feeling fully present and totally immersed in Brandon’s story I was reminded of all the core reason why the CPG podcast is my passion project:

Having conversations with folks like Brandon makes me feel more alive, lights me up on the inside, and genuinely makes my day.

And so, before you hear the story about the time Brandon was almost a member of the band Muse, the unanticipated way his poker journey began, or the counter-intuitive method he uses to improve his poker skills I just wanted to share with you this lesson:

Remember to make space in your life to do the things that make you feel alive inside, even if your brain and central nervous system push back. Life is too short and precious to do anything otherwise.

Now, without any further ado, I bring to you an amazing poker player and even more amazing human being… the great Brandon Shack-Harris.

#5 CPG Villagers: Business Building & Outlaw Biker Gangs
Have you ever wondered how you would live your life if you were certain your time was quickly running out? That's the paradigm in which Ian Armijo has lived his entire life.

When he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a kid, his life expectancy was 14 years old.

Instead of shying back, Armijo met his genetic challenge head on and did everything in his power to live a full life that's true to himself.

Today, Armijo is 40-years-old, has bought and sold many successful businesses, is a member of an outlaw biker gang, and is pursuing poker with everything in his soul.

Listen to his story today on Chasing Poker Greatness.

#182 Josh Arieh: $8 Million+ in Live Poker Tournament Cashes

#182 Josh Arieh: $8 Million+ in Live Poker Tournament Cashes
Josh Arieh has been in and around the game of poker his entire adult life and has racked up more than $8.1 million in lifetime MTT cashes.

I feel like I’m in danger of going full Troy McClure in this intro but you may remember Mr. Arieh from the time he got third in the 2004 WSOP ME (The year that past CPG guest Greg “Fossilman” Raymer went the distance), his two WSOP gold bracelet victories, or from the legendary bad beat he put on Bryce Yockey at the final table the $50k Poker Players Championship playing 2-7 triple draw.

It was a particularly brutal hand where he busted poor Mr. Yockey despite being a more than 99% underdog.

One thing that tends to get left out of that story, by the way, is the fact that Josh had a commanding chip lead 4-handed and doubling up Yockey would have only cost him about 15% of his stack.

Another fun little story about that event is that one of my closest friends (The man I have to give a hat tip to for introducing Josh and I in the first place) actually bought a rather large piece of Josh for that event.

What Bryce Yockey didn’t know he had going against him is that my friend runs absurdly hot backing players so spiking a 1%’er was honestly kind of expected.

But when it comes to having a rich, colorful, successful journey through the world of gambling and playing poker it’s hard to find a more compelling character than Josh Arieh.

He has undeniably lived a fulfilling life of high adventure on the green felt Chasing Poker Greatness.

And in today’s episode featuring the one and only Josh Arieh, you’re going to learn:

Josh’s origin story into the world of poker and playing cards.
What Josh was feeling, thinking, and experiencing at that legendary 2004 ME final table.
The project Josh is currently working on will very likely fire you up.
    And much, MUCH more!

And now, without any further ado, I bring to you a fearless gambler who has stood the test of time… the one and only Josh Arieh.

#181 Wayne Chiang: Former Owner of Live at the Bike & Starcraft World Champion

#181 Wayne Chiang: Former Owner of Live at the Bike & Starcraft World Champion
Today’s guest on Chasing Poker Greatness is a former StarCraft World Champion and the former owner of a little poker stream you may have heard of, Live at the Bike, Wayne “D22-soso” Chiang.

Wayne has lived quite the life navigating the worlds of professional video gaming and then making the natural segue into the world of poker.

It’s probably an overlooked quality of both aspiring professional poker players and long-time pros that an inordinate percentage of them tend to have had a major interest in some form of competitive gaming before venturing into the world of poker.

Wayne’s one of the select few humans who has performed at a very high level in both disciplines for a very long time. He’s even invented a brand-new casino poker game that’ll be hitting the pit floors in the very near future… which is a project that has been in the pipeline for half a decade thus far.

In today’s conversation with Wayne “D22-soso” Chiang, you’re going to learn:

Wayne’s origin story as one of the OG professional video gamers in the world.
Some big behind-the-scenes news and stories regarding Live at the Bike.
What the poker world was like for Wayne coming up in Southern California.
    And much, MUCH more!

Now, without any further ado, I bring to you world-class gamer, professional poker player, and businessman Wayne “D22-soso” Chiang.

#178 Amanda Botfeld: Author of "A Girl's Guide to Poker"

#178 Amanda Botfeld: Author of "A Girl's Guide to Poker"
Today’s return guest on CPG is the author of “A Girl’s Guide to Poker”, the always brilliant and engaging Amanda Botfeld.

Despite her book tour being on ice because of a global pandemic, Amanda hasn’t been sitting around resting on her laurels. Not only has she been studying and growing as a poker player, she’s also been creating and teaching a college level poker course for the next generation of card players.

In the following conversation, you’re gonna hear me get fired up at some despicable internet trolls who are so miserable and have so little going on in their lives that they feel the need to tear someone down who's doing everything in her power to grow and popularize this game.

The reason why that touched a nerve with me is because if the next poker boom is meant to come from a large influx of women entering the poker world, it will be exactly because of folks like Amanda Botfeld and in SPITE of the slimy trolls who exist only to ooze out of the sewers to spread their awfulness.

And if you’re as passionate about growing this beautiful game as much as Amanda and I, and want to see it thriving for many, many years to come… highly consider either scooping up a copy of Amanda’s book or directing a human being you love in your life to pokerpowher.com.

In today’s episode with Amanda Botfeld, you’re going to learn:

    - Amanda’s path to teaching a college poker course.
    - How poker has touched almost every aspect of Amanda’s life.
    - And much, MUCH more!

Now, without any further ado, I bring to you poker pro, author, and teacher… the thoughtful and articulate grower of poker, Amanda Botfeld.

#177 Tom Wheaton: Round 2 w/ The Founder of FadedSpade & Above the Felt

#177 Tom Wheaton: Round 2 w/ The Founder of FadedSpade & Above the Felt
Today’s guest on CPG is Tom Wheaton who is the founder of Faded Spade (The official playing card of the World Poker Tour) and the poker marketing and talent agency Above the Felt (Where he’s put together a top shelf roster of poker players including 4x WPT champion Darren Elias, the founder of SolveForWhy and longtime friend of CPG Matt Berkey, WSOP Champ Chris Moneymaker, and poker pro & WSOP commentator Jamie Kerstetter).

This is Tom’s second of what I believe to be many, many CPG appearances, because the man is a hero to the entire poker community. You’re about to hear just how passionate he is about growing and playing this card game we all love so much and how he’s consistently putting his money & time where his mouth is.

Because not only does he run two poker businesses (somehow without neglecting his family), but in today’s episode he’s about to let you in on another major project he’s somehow carving out time for that has the potential to reverberate throughout the entire poker universe before it’s all said and done.

In today’s episode Tom’s also going to share stories from his greatest poker hits collection, explain how he’s able to play $5k and $10k tournaments despite being under rolled (And how you can, too), tell you about the moment he felt he was genuinely a part of the poker community, and much, MUCH more!

So now, without any further ado, I bring to you poker player, business builder, and champion of poker… the founder of FadedSpade and Above the Felt… the one and only Tom Wheaton.

#176 Igor Ioffe: Crushing with Common Sense

#176 Igor Ioffe: Crushing with Common Sense
Today’s guest on CPG is longtime online and live cash game crusher Igor Ioffe.

Like many, many world-class cash game players around the world, Igor Ioffe has flown under the radar in the poker worl d for a couple of decades.

These are the types of guests I absolutely LOVE having on CPG because they’re human beings after my own heart. All they wanna do is compete at a high level on the tables, maximize their hourly rate, cash out, and go home.

Prestige and validation from the poker community at large is basically a non-factor.

And what ends up happening, as in the case of today’s guest Igor Ioffe, is they’re able to reduce the external noise, develop a streamlined process for improvement with an end goal of maximizing their poker ability, and over time they develop into a poker monster.

This may sound funny coming from someone with a podcast called “Chasing Poker Greatness” but, to me, poker greatness and anonymity are not mutually exclusive. For another real world example you only have to look at VeniVidi from the Galfond challenge.

With that said, in today’s conversation with Igor Ioffe you’re going to learn:

    - A Greatness Bomb on the potential damage well-meaning poker teachers can cause to your results on the green felt.
    - How Igor originally fell into the world of cards.
    - What Igor believes are defining characteristics of winning poker players.
    - And much, much more!

Without any further ado, I bring to you a man you very much don’t want to play poker against… high level cash game crusher, Igor Ioffe.

#175 Pamela Balzano: Living Life with Passion & Curiosity

#175 Pamela Balzano: Living Life with Passion & Curiosity
Today’s guest on Chasing Poker Greatness is a prominent Youtuber, Twitch Streamer, poker player, thinker, and dreamer Pamela “Pamsi” Balzano.

Pamela’s path to CPG comes by way of referral from Brazilian poker superstar Felipe “Mojave” Ramos and, I gotta say, the man’s suggestion was on point.

Pamela may not currently be on your radar and that’s because the bulk of her content creation and poker journey is primarily for a Spanish speaking audience. An audience that, I might add, is quite large.

On YouTube, Instagram, and Twitch she has around 35k followers combined and that’s a number that is growing by the minute.

As you’re about to learn, she has earned her rabid following by crafting engaging, narrative driven pieces of content that simply resonates with her fellow human beings.

So in today’s episode with Pamela Balzano, you’re going to learn:

    Pamela’s awesome content creation process.
Her origin story into the world of poker.
Why this card game is so meaningful to her and what her future plans hold.
    And much, MUCH more!

Now, without any further ado I bring to you world-class content creator, Twitch streamer, and amazing, amazing human being… Pamela Balzano.

    #174 Andrew Barber: 2015 $10k WSOP H.O.R.S.E. Champion

    #174 Andrew Barber: 2015 $10k WSOP H.O.R.S.E. Champion
Today’s guest on CPG is the winner of the 2015 $10k WSOP H.O.R.S.E. event, the brilliant Andrew Barber.

If there’s one way to sum up Andrew Barber, it’s this:

    The man’s a stud.

In life, there’s one trait I value in human beings above all others:

The ability to admit when their previous opinion, no matter how strongly believed, is wrong.

This changing of opinion may stem from new information or a revelation that it was rooted in some kind of cognitive bias but, whatever the case may be... they have enough courage to simply say, “You know what, you’re right, and now I’m gonna look at this a little differently.”

When you approach poker and life from this paradigm, you’re able to expedite your evolution as a human being and avoid unnecessary suffering in a way I can’t overstate.

I have many regrets in life but not understanding this lesson earlier on is one of my biggest and this is an area, as you’re about to find out, where Andrew Barber thrives.

Andrew’s also a former engineer, economist, and follower of stoic philosophy who spends most of his life force these days in academia.

In today’s episode with Andrew Barber, you’re going to learn:

    - How infusing altruism with his poker career completely changed Andrew’s perspective on being a professional card player.
    - it was very clear to Andrew that engineering was not going to be his path in life.
    - A Greatness Bomb in the form of a question that will save you untold hours of frustration when discussing emotional topics with your friends and family.
    - And much, MUCH more!

And now, without any further ado, I bring to you WSOP bracelet winner and one of the highest level thinkers I know… Andrew Barber.
