THE OVERCOMERS - Episode 9, Sean Kelley - Surviving a Broken Family, Military Deployments & Covid19

Our guest for today’s THE OVERCOMERS episode is Sean Kelley!

Coming from a broken family with step-parents and step-siblings from both sides of the family and growing up financially strained, he then signed up for the military and experienced 2 years of combat zone military deployments.
These are some of the difficulties he had to overcome before he was affected by the economic crash of 2009. And later on, he was struck by Covid-19 which almost took his life.

After leaving the US Army Special Operations as a Non-Commissioned Officer, Sean Kelley applied the leadership principles he learned to automotive management and successfully led car dealerships for over a decade.

After surviving severe covid pneumonia, Sean’s most recent globally published book, “The Visitor”, hit #1 on Amazons Best Seller List and was published.

Sean launched a non-profit called Cards for COVID, cards4covid.org, which supports hundreds of medical professionals and COVID patients in multiple States.

Sean’s passion for people development and ability to coach led him to grow from General Sales Manager to Chief Business Development Officer of a multi-million-dollar CRM software company.

Now, as CEO of Car Motivators, and founder of Market Motivators, Sean and his team work with dozens of car dealerships, technology companies, Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, and hundreds of coaching clients across the country to help them achieve their biggest goals.

Sean helps his clients grow with a no-bull approach and teaches them the ability to improve communication follow-through and continuous improvement. As such, Sean’s clients consistently set sales records, and eliminate employee turnover, all while increasing gross and net profit.
More importantly, Sean and his team help the managers throughout the businesses they coach enjoy their role by helping them grow as leaders.

Currently, Sean has already achieved and has been featured in the following:
2018 Consultant of the Year by Dealership News
Recently ranked #10 in Ambition.com’s top 100 sales coaches.
Conferences like: Digital Dealer, Automotive Game Changers, Rockstar Tech Conference, Canadian Game Changers, SLADA, TIADA, and DrivingSales.
Sean’s vision is to positively impact the leadership landscape and culture of the businesses he works with, by teaching managers the leadership language of coaching.

Guest: Jennifer Donnelly - Stepsister & Poisoned

Marissa chats with Jennifer Donnelly about her fairy tale retellings - STEPSISTER and POISONED - as well as Marissa's newest novel - GILDED! We delve into some of the deeper themes in our favorite stories, and how writers can use retellings to change an ongoing discussion in our society; how so many retellings come from a place of irritation with the source material and why creators are often drawn to "set the story right"; why embracing the darkness in fairy tales adds a layer of authenticity and can ultimately be empowering for young readers; writing protagonists that include a little bit of ourselves in them and also a little bit of who we'd like to be; using word choice, sensory details, and haunting music to capture an eerie vibe in your writing; and various techniques for developing villains and morally ambiguous side characters who are both alluring and multi-dimensional.

    Poisoned

    Poisoned

Join my friend Lily and me as we dive into the book Poisoned by Jennifer Donnelly!

Poisoned is a creative retelling of the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Sophie is a loving, kind hearted girl who is continually told her kindness makes her weak, and that she could never be a good queen. Her (evil) step mother never lets Sophie forget this fact, and tells Sophie she must marry a prince who can rule for her.

But Sophie isn't so sure...after all, it's the kindness of seven strangers that saves Sophie's life after the Huntsman takes her heart.

Sophie soon discovers that her step mother may not be the only one who wants her dead, and that there is an even more dangerous foe lurking in the Dark Wood. A foe she must defeat if she wants to take her throne back and become queen.

Poisoned is not only a wonderful retelling of Snow White, it is also full of encouragement that we all need to hear. Jennifer Donnelly weaves truths into her story that we all need to hear; truths about how we let peoples poisoned words devour our hearts and cause us to live in fear. But we shouldn't do that...kindness and love are strengths, and can overcome all fear.

Joining them is a very special guest, April's half brother that she did not meet until two years ago.  They discuss how their relationship developed and has evolved in the last couple of years.

    StepSister

    StepSister

Today I am sharing with you one of my all-time favorite YA books.

StepSister, by Jennifer Donnelly, is a fairytale retelling like none other!

Isabelle is Cinderella's ugly stepsister. Her jealousy of Cinderella has made her mean and hollow. But now Isabelle has the chance to change her fate and chose her own destiny. She will prove "it takes more than heartache to break a girl."

StepSister is a wonderful story that shows us that ugly is in the eye of the beholder, and that pretty is more than just our physical appearance.

This story will capture your heart like none other as you are wooed by Jennifer Donnelly's wonderful wit and words of wisdom. You'll feel like she is not just telling a story, but speaking to your soul.
